Dua when seeing the new moon – 1

When seeing the new moon, one should recite the following dua thrice:

هِلَالُ خَيْرٍ وَرُشْدٍ هِلَالُ خَيْرٍ وَرُشْدٍ هِلَالُ خَيْرٍ وَرُشْدٍ آمَنْتُ بِالَّذِي خَلَقَكَ

(O Allah! Make this) a crescent of goodness (blessings) and (make it) a crescent of guidance. (O Allah! Make this) a crescent of goodness (blessings) and (make it) a crescent of guidance. (O Allah! Make this) a crescent of goodness (blessings) and (make it) a crescent of guidance. (O moon) I bring Imaan in the Being who created you.

Thereafter recite the following dua:

الْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِي ذَهَبَ بِشَهْرِ كَذَا، وَجَاءَ بِشَهْرِ كَذَا

All praise is due to Allah Ta‘ala, who took away so-and-so month (e.g. Zul Qadah) and brought so-and-so month (e.g. Zul Hijjah).

عن قتادة أنه بلغه أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، كان إذا رأى الهلال قال: هلال خير ورشد، هلال خير ورشد، هلال خير ورشد، آمنت بالذي خلقك ثلاث مرات، ثم يقول: الحمد لله الذي ذهب بشهر كذا، وجاء بشهر كذا (سنن أبي داود، الرقم: 5092)

Hazrat Qataadah (rahimahullah) reports that when Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would see the crescent (of the new month), he would recite the abovementioned dua.
