Duaas when Visiting The Sick

Duaa One:

لَا بَأْسَ طَهُوْرٌ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ

There is no need to worry, insha-Allah through this sickness, you will be cleansed and purified.

N.B. You will be cleansed and purified means that you are merely undergoing a cleansing process. Spiritually, you are being cleansed from your sins, and physically, your body is being cleansed from toxins. Hence, when this sickness has come to you from Allah Ta‘ala as a mercy in disguise, then there is no need for you to worry and grieve.

عن ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما: أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم دخل على أعرابي يعوده، قال: وكان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا دخل على مريض يعوده فقال له: لا بأس، طهور إن شاء الله  (صحيح البخاري، الرقم: 5656)

Hazrat Ibnu Abbaas (radhiyallahu anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) once visited a sick villager, and whenever he would visit the sick, he used to recite the following dua:

لاَ بَأسَ طَهُورٌ إنْ شَاءَ اللهُ

Duaa Two:

One should recite the following dua seven times:

أَسْألُ اللهَ الْعَظِيْمَ رَبَّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيْمِ أَنْ يَّشْفِيَكَ

I beseech Allah Ta‘ala, the Almighty, the Rabb of the great throne, to cure you.

عن ابن عباس، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، قال: من عاد مريضا، لم يحضر أجله فقال عنده سبع مرار: أسأل الله العظيم رب العرش العظيم أن يشفيك، إلا عافاه الله من ذلك المرض (سنن أبي داود، الرقم: 3106)

Hazrat Ibnu Abbaas (radhiyallahu anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Whoever recites the following dua seven times upon a sick person who is not destined to die in that sickness, Allah Ta‘ala will cure him from that sickness:

أَسْألُ اللهَ الْعَظِيْمَ رَبَّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيْمِ أَنْ يَّشْفِيَكَ

Duaa Three:

بِاسْمِ اللهِ أَرْقِيْكَ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ يُؤْذِيْكَ مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ نَفْسٍ أَوْ عَيْنٍ حَاسِدٍ اللهُ يَشْفِيْكَ بِاسْمِ اللهِ أَرْقِيْكَ

In the name of Allah Ta‘ala I recite these words upon you (and treat you seeking cure from Allah Ta‘ala) from everything which is harming you – from the evil of every soul or jealous eye. May Allah Ta‘ala grant you cure. In the name of Allah Ta‘ala I recite these words upon you (and treat you seeking cure from Allah Ta‘ala).

عن أبي سعيد، أن جبريل، أتى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال: يا محمد اشتكيت؟ فقال: نعم قال: باسم الله أرقيك، من كل شيء يؤذيك، من شر كل نفس أو عين حاسد، الله يشفيك باسم الله أرقيك  (صحيح مسلم، الرقم: 2186)

Hazrat Abu Sa’eed (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Jibreel (‘alaihis salaam) once visited Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and asked, “O Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), are you feeling ill?” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied in the affirmative. Hazrat Jibreel (‘alaihis salaam) then recited the following dua:

بِاسْمِ اللهِ أَرْقِيْكَ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ يُؤْذِيْكَ مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ نَفْسٍ أَوْ عَيْنٍ حَاسِدٍ اللهُ يَشْفِيْكَ بِاسْمِ اللهِ أَرْقِيْكَ

Duaa Four:

أَذْهِبِ الْبَأْسَ رَبَّ النَّاسِ وَاشْفِ أَنْتَ الشَّافِيْ لَا شِفَاءَ إِلَّا شِفَاؤُكَ شِفَاءً لَا يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا

Remove the affliction, O Rabb of all people, and grant cure – You alone are the One who can grant cure, there is no cure besides Your cure – (grant) such a cure which will leave no sickness.

عن عائشة رضي الله عنها: أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، كان إذا أتى مريضا أو أتي به، قال: أذهب الباس رب الناس، اشف وأنت الشافي، لا شفاء إلا شفاؤك، شفاء لا يغادر سقما (صحيح البخاري، الرقم: 5675)

Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu anha) reports that when Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would visit a sick person, or a sick person would be brought to him, he would recite the following dua:

أَذْهِبِ الْبَأْسَ رَبَّ النَّاسِ وَاشْفِ أَنْتَ الشَّافِيْ لَا شِفَاءَ إِلَّا شِفَاؤُكَ شِفَاءً لَا يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا

Duaa Five:

اللهُمَّ اشْفِهِ، اللهُمَّ عَافِه

O Allah, grant him cure, O Allah grant him aafiyah (ease)

عن عمرو بن مرة، قال: سمعت عبد الله بن سلمة يحدث عن علي، قال: مر علي رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وأنا أقول: اللهم إن كان أجلي قد حضر فأرحني، وإن كان متأخرا فارفعني، وإن كان بلاء فصبرني، فضربني برجله وقال: اللهم اشفه، اللهم عافه فما اشتكيت وجعي ذلك بعد (السنن الكبرى للنسائي، الرقم: 10830)

Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports, “Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) once passed me while I was making this dua (due to my illness), ‘O Allah, if my time (of death) has come, then grant me comfort (through death), and if it is to come after some time, then raise (the sickness from) me, and if it is a test, then grant me patience through it.’ Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) hit me with his leg and made the following dua, after which I did not perceive any pain from that illness.”

اللهُمَّ اشْفِهِ، اللهُمَّ عَافِه

Duaa Six:

One should address the sick person and recite the following dua:

يَا فُلَانُ، شَفَى اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ سَقَمَكَ، وَغَفَرَ لَكَ ذَنْبَكَ، وَعَافَاكَ فِي دِينِكَ وَجِسْمِكَ إِلَى مُدَّةِ أَجَلِكَ

O so-and-so (in place of the word ‘fulaan’, mention the name of the sick person), may Allah Ta‘ala cure your sickness, forgive your sins, and grant you aafiyah (ease) in your deen and body till the time you pass away

عن سلمان رضي الله عنه قال: عادني رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وأنا مريض، فقال: يا سلمان، شفى الله عز وجل سقمك، وغفر لك ذنبك، وعافاك في دينك وجسمك إلى مدة أجلك (عمل اليوم والليلة لابن السني، الرقم: 548)

Hazrat Salmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that on one occasion Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) visited me while I was sick. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) recited the following dua:

يَا سَلْمَانُ، شَفَى اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ سَقَمَكَ، وَغَفَرَ لَكَ ذَنْبَكَ، وَعَافَاكَ فِي دِينِكَ وَجِسْمِكَ إِلَى مُدَّةِ أَجَلِكَ

Duaa Seven:

يَا حَلِيمُ يَا كَرِيمُ اشْفِ فُلَانًا

O the most tolerant, O the most noble, cure (in place of the word ‘fulaan’, mention the name of the sick person)

عن فضيل بن عمرو، قال: جاء رجل إلى علي فقال: إن فلانا شاك، قال: فيسرك إن يبرأ؟ قال: نعم، قال: قل: يا حليم، يا كريم، اشف فلانا (المصنف لابن أبي شيبة، الرقم 24048)

Hazrat Fuzail bin Amr (rahimahullah) reports that a person once came to Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and said, “So-and-so is feeling sick.” Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) asked, “Will it please you that he recovers from his illness?” The person replied in the affirmative. Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) advised him to recite the following dua:

يَا حَلِيمُ يَا كَرِيمُ اشْفِ فُلَانًا

Duaa Eight:

اللَّهُمَّ اشْفِ عَبْدَكَ يَنْكَأُ لَكَ عَدُوًّا، أَوْ يَمْشِي لَكَ إِلَى جَنَازَةٍ

O Allah, cure Your servant, so that for Your pleasure he may injure the enemy, or for Your pleasure he may walk to a janaazah (and participate in it).

عن ابن عمرو قال: قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: إذا جاء الرجل يعود مريضا، فليقل: اللهم اشف عبدك ينكأ لك عدوا، أو يمشي لك إلى جنازة (سنن أبي داود، الرقم: 3107)

Hazrat ibn Amr (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “When a person visits a sick person, he should recite the following dua

اللَّهُمَّ اشْفِ عَبْدَكَ يَنْكَأُ لَكَ عَدُوًّا، أَوْ يَمْشِي لَكَ إِلَى جَنَازَةٍ

Duaa Nine:

One should recite the following dua thrice:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَرْقِيكَ، وَاللَّهُ يَشْفِيكَ، مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ فِيكَ، مِنْ شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَد

In the name of Allah Ta‘ala I recite these words upon you (and treat you seeking cure from Allah Ta‘ala). May Allah Ta‘ala grant you cure from every sickness within you, from the evil of the women who blow in knots, and from the evil of an envier when he envies.

عن أبي هريرة، قال: جاء النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يعودني، فقال لي ألا أرقيك برقية جاءني بها جبرائيل؟ قلت: بأبي، وأمي بلى يا رسول الله قال: بسم الله أرقيك، والله يشفيك، من كل داء فيك، من شر النفاثات في العقد، ومن شر حاسد إذا حسد ثلاث مرات (سنن ابن ماجة، الرقم: 3524)

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports: “Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) once came to visit me when I was sick. He said to me, ‘Should I not treat you by reciting those words which Hazrat Jibreel (‘alaihis salaam) brought to me (when I was sick)?’ I replied, ‘May my parents be sacrificed for you, definitely, O Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).’ Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then recited the following dua thrice:   

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَرْقِيكَ، وَاللَّهُ يَشْفِيكَ، مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ فِيكَ، مِنْ شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَد
