Sunnats and Aadaab of Ghusal- Part 3 – Shaafi’ee

1. Pour water over the right side of the body thrice, from the top of the body to the bottom, and thereafter pour water over the left side of the body thrice, from the top of the body to the bottom. Through washing in this manner, the sunnah will be fulfilled. It is also correct to wash the right side once, followed by the left side once, repeating this process for a second and third time. By washing in this manner, the sunnah will also be fulfilled. When pouring water on the body, pour water on the front portion of the body before the back portion.^[1]

2. Ensure that water reaches every part of the body. Each time you pour water, rub the body to ensure that the water reaches the skin. Even if an area equal to a hair’s breadth is left dry, the fardh ghusl will not be complete. When washing the body, wash the front before the back.^[2]

عن علي رضي الله عنه أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال من ترك موضع شعرة من جنابة لم يغسلها فعل بها كذا وكذا من النار قال علي فمن ثم عاديت رأسي ثلاثا وكان يجز شعره (سنن أبي داود، الرقم: ٢٤٩)^[3]

Sayyiduna Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “The one who is in janaabah (requires a fardh ghusl) and leaves a portion (of his body) equal to a hair without washing it, that portion of his body will be subjected to such-and-such punishment in Jahannum.” Sayyiduna Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) thereafter said thrice, “That is why I dislike keeping hair.” It is reported that Sayyiduna Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) would shave his head (out of the fear that during the ghusl, no hair should remain dry, thereby causing the ghusl to be incomplete).

3. Do not waste water during the ghusl. Too much of water should not be used, nor should so little be used, that one is unable to wash thoroughly.See 101

عن عبد الله بن محمد بن عقيل بن أبي طالب عن أبيه عن جده رضي الله عنهم قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يجزئ من الوضوء مد ومن الغسل صاع فقال رجل لا يجزئنا فقال قد كان يجزئ من هو خير منك وأكثر شعرا يعني النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم (سنن ابن ماجة، الرقم: ٢٧٠)^[4]

Sayyiduna Aqeel bin Abi Taalib (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “One mudd of water is sufficient for wudhu, and one saa’ of water is sufficient for ghusl.” Hearing this, a certain person remarked, “This amount of water will not suffice us.” Sayyiduna Aqeel (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) admonished this person and responded, “It would suffice the one who was better than you and who had more hair than you (referring to Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)).” (Mudd and saa’ are two types of measures)

4. Do not engage in talking, singing or any type of conversation while performing ghusl.^[5]

(ويثلث) بالشروط السابقة في الوضوء تخليل رأسه ثم غسله للاتباع ثم تخليل شعور وجهه ثم غسله ثم تخليل شعور بقية البدن ثم غسله قياسا عليه

وهذا الترتيب ظاهر وإن لم أر من صرح به وتثليث البقية إما بأن يغسل شقه الأيمن ثم الأيسر ثم هكذا ثانية ثم ثالثة أو يوالي ثلاثة الأيمن ثم ثلاثة الأيسر وكان قياس كيفية التثليث في الوضوء تعين الثانية للسنة واقتضاه كلام الشارح لكن من المعلوم الفرق بين ما هنا وثم فإن كلا من المغسول ثم كاليدين متميز منفصل عن الآخر فتعينت فيه تلك الكيفية لذلك بخلاف ما هنا فإن كون البدن فيه كالعضو الواحد منع قياسه على الوضوء في خصوص ذلك وأوجب له حكما تميز به وهو حصول السنة بكل من الكيفيتين فتأمله (تحفة المحتاج ١/٢٩٧)

لهذا الحديث شاهد من حديث ابن عباس قال قال رجل كم يكفيني للوضوء قال مد قال كم يكفيني للغسل قال صاع قال فقال الرجل لا يكفيني فقال لا أم لك قد كفى من هو خير منك رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم رواه أحمد والبزار والطبراني في الكبير ورجاله ثقات (مجمع الزوائد الرقم: ١٠٩٩)
