1. When replying to the salaam, it is permissible for you to reply with a salaam that is equal to the greeting received. However, if you reply with a longer salaam it will be better and more rewarding. For example, if you were greeted with the words \u201cAssalaamu alaikum\u201d, then you may reply by saying \u201cWa alaikumus salaam\u201d. However, it is better and more rewarding for you to say \u201cWa alaikumus salaam wa rahmatullah\u201d or \u201cWa alaikumus salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuhu.\u201d[1]<\/sup><\/p>\n

Allah Ta\u2018ala mentions in the Quraan Majeed, \u201cAnd when you are greeted with a greeting, then greet with a better greeting than it or return it (in a like manner).\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

2. The words of salaam end with \u201cWa barakaatuhu\u201d. One should not add any other words after \u201cWa barakaatuhu\u201d.See [1]<\/sup><\/p>\n

Muhammad bin Amr bin Ataa\u2019 (rahimahullah) reports: On one occasion, I was seated with Abdullah bin Abbaas (radhiyallahu \u2018anhuma) when a person from Yemen entered the gathering and made salaam saying, \u201cAssalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa baraakatuhu,\u201d and he then added some words to the salaam. At that time, Abdullah bin Abbaas (radhiyallahu \u2018anhuma) had lost his sight, hence he asked, \u201cWho is this person?\u201d His companions said, \u201cThis is the person from Yemen who frequents your gatherings.\u201d They described the person until Abdullah bin Abbaas (radhiyallahu \u2018anhuma) recognized him. Abdullah bin Abbaas (radhiyallahu \u2018anhuma) then said, \u201cSalaam ends with barakah (i.e. by saying wa baraakatuhu).\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

3. When replying to the salaam of a person, reply to the salaam verbally and not by a mere sign of the hand or a nod of the head.[2]<\/sup><\/p>\n

4. If a group of people meet a person, and one member of the group makes salaam to him, then his salaam will suffice on behalf of the entire group. Similarly, if a person meets a group of people and greets them with salaam, the reply of one person from the group will suffice on behalf of the entire group.[3]<\/sup><\/p>\n

Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cWhen a group of people pass by a person, then it will suffice all of them if one among them makes salaam (to the person they meet), and when a group of people are seated, then it suffices all of them if one among them replies to the salaam (of the person who greets them with salaam).\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

5. Make salaam upon entering the home. If there is no one present within the home, you should make salaam by saying:<\/p>\n

Hazrat Anas (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) reports: Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) once said to me, \u201cO my beloved son, upon entering your home, greet your family (i.e. the inmates of the home) with salaam. This will be a means of earning blessings for yourself and your family.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

6. When leaving the home, leave the home with making salaam.<\/p>\n

Hazrat Qataadah (rahimahullah) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cWhen you enter a home, then make salaam to its inmates, and when you leave (the home), then leave your salaam as a trust with the people of the home (i.e. make salaam to the people when leaving).\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong> Hazrat Nabi (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam)<\/em> has taught us to make salaam when leaving the home and he said, \u201cLeave your salaam as a trust with the people of the home\u201d. Generally, when one keeps a trust by someone, he comes back at a later period to receive it. Therefore, when one leaves the trust of salaam with the people of the home, it is as though one is taking a good omen and placing his hope in Allah\u2019s Ta\u2018ala mercy that Allah Ta\u2018ala will soon return him to the home he is leaving.<\/p>\n
