Abu Musabbih Al-Maqraaiy (rahimahullah) relates: On one occasion, we were seated by Abu Zuhair An-Numairi (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) who was from among the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu \u2018anhum). He was most eloquent in speech. When anyone among us used to engage in dua, he would say, \u201cSeal the dua with aameen, for aameen is like a stamp on the paper.\u201d He then said further, \u201cShould I not inform you regarding this? One night, we came out with Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) and came across a person who was fervently engaged in dua. Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) stopped to listen to him and said, \u2018If he seals his dua, he will make Jannah binding for him.\u2019 One of the people asked, \u2018How should he seal it (his dua)?\u2019 Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) replied, \u2018He should seal it with aameen? If he seals it with aameen, he has made Jannah binding for him.\u2019 The one who had asked Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) went up to the person and said, \u2018O so and so, seal your dua with aameen and accept the glad tidings (of Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam)).<\/em>\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

2. After completing your dua, recite durood shareef.<\/p>\n

Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) narrates, \u201cDuas remain suspended between the heavens and the earth. They do not proceed towards the heavens as long as durood on Nabi (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) has not been recited (i.e. there is no guarantee for their acceptance).\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

3. Upon completion of the dua, rub your palms over your face.[3]<\/sup><\/p>\n

Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) reports that whenever Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) would raise his hands in dua, he would not lower them until he wiped his hands over his face.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

4. Do not make dua for anything that is impermissible or for anything that is impossible (e.g. to become a Nabi).<\/p>\n

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (rahimahullah) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cA person\u2019s dua will continuously be accepted as long as he does not ask for something sinful or for the cutting of family ties, and as long as he is not hasty (in his dua).\u201d Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) was asked, \u201cHow is a person hasty (in his dua)?\u201d Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) replied, \u201cA person says, \u2018I have made dua and I have made dua, yet I do not see my dua being answered.\u2019 He then gets tired and ceases to make dua.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

5. Refrain from giving detailed descriptions in your dua. Rather, you should ask for goodness in general.<\/p>\n

On one occasion, Hazrat Abdullah bin Mughaffal (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) heard his son making dua in the following words, \u201cO Allah! I ask You for a white palace on the right side of Jannah when I enter it.\u201d Hearing this, Hazrat Abdullah bin Mughaffal (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) said, \u201cO my son! Ask Allah Ta\u2018ala for Jannah, and seek His protection from the fire of Jahannum, as I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) say, \u2018There will be a group of people in this Ummah who will surpass the limits in tahaarah (e.g. wudhu, ghusl, etc.) and in making dua.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Call on your Rabb with humility and softly, for Allah Ta\u2018ala does not love those who surpass the limits.<\/em>[6]<\/sup><\/p>\n

6. It is better to make a comprehensive dua.<\/p>\n

Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) would prefer those duas that were comprehensive, and he used to leave out the other duas<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The following are among the comprehensive masnoon duas which are reported in the Hadith:<\/p>\n

O Allah Ta\u2018ala, I ask You for the good of what Your messenger, Hazrat Muhammad (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam), asked You for, and I seek Your protection from the evil of what Your messenger, Hazrat Muhammad (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam), sought Your protection from. From You alone is help sought, and You alone can fulfil and complete the need, and there is no ability (to refrain from evil) nor any power (to do good) except with the help of Allah Ta\u2018ala.<\/em>[8]<\/sup><\/p>\n
