He was born in the year 150 A.H. (the very year Imaam Abu Hanifah passed away) and passed away in the month of Rajab, 204 A.H.<a id=\"ref1\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>His Expertise<\/h4>\n<p>Imaam Ahmad (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) said: \u201cAnyone who used ink and a pen (for the knowledge of Deen) is undoubtedly indebted to Imaam Shaafi\u2019i (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) in some way or the other.\u201d Imaam Ahmad (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) also said: \u201cFor forty years I have been supplicating for Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee after Salaah.\u201d Once Imaam Ahmad\u2019s (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) son asked him: \u201cWhat type of a person was Imaam Shaafi\u2019i? I hear you supplicating for him so much?\u201d He replied: \u201cO my beloved son! Imaam Shaafi\u2019i (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) was like the sun for the world and a safety for the people. Think about it, do these two (bounties) have any substitute?\u201d <a id=\"ref2\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Abdur Rahmaan bin Mahdi says: \u201cI do not perform any salaah, except that I also make Duaa for Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee.\u201d\u00a0<a id=\"ref3\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Imaam Shaafi\u2019i (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) was titled in Baghdad as \u2018Naasirus Sunnah\u2019 (the saviour of the Sunnah). Ibn Katheer (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) says: \u201cHe memorized the Quraan when he was only seven, the Muwatta of Imaam Maalik when he was ten, and his Shaikh, Muslim ibn Khallaad az-Zanji permitted him to pass verdicts (Fatwa) when he was only fifteen. (Some narrations state that he was eighteen). Abu Thowr (Rahmatullahi Alaihi), one of the Mujtahideen of that era, says: \u201cWe never saw anyone like Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee.<a id=\"ref4\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Abu Ubaid (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) says: \u201cI never saw anyone more eloquent, intelligent and cautious (referring to his state of Wara\u2019) than Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee. Imaam Ahmad (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) would relate the Hadith narrated by Abu Dawood (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) wherein Abu Hurairah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: \u201cVerily Allah appoints for this Ummah, upon every hundred years, a reviver for its Deen.\u201d Imaam Ahmad (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) would then comment: \u201cUmar ibn Abdul Aziz was sent at the end of the first hundred years and Imaam Shaafi\u2019i was sent at the end of the second century (as a reviver).\u201d<a id=\"ref5\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ibrahim bin Abi Taalib says that I once asked Abu Qudaamah As-Sarakhsi regarding Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee, Imaam Ahmad, Abu Ubaid and Ibn Raahway (Rahimahumullah). He replied: \u201cImaam Shaafi\u2019ee is the most diligent amongst them in fiqh.<a id=\"ref6\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yahya bin Ma\u2019een once came to Imaam Ahmad bin Hambal (Rahmatullahi Alaihi). Whilst he was seated with him, Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee passed by on his mule. Imaam Ahmad hastily stood up to greet him. He then followed him and remained for a while with Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee, while Yahya remained seated. When he returned, Yahya asked him: \u201cO Abu Abdillah, why did you behave in this manner?\u201d Imaam Ahmad replied: \u201cIf you really want to know why I behaved in this manner, then the reason is that if you want to acquire the true understanding of Deen, then hold on firmly to the tail of the mule of Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee and do not separate from him.\u201d <a id=\"ref7\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ayyoub bin Suwaid says: \u201cI did not think I would live to see a man as great as Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee.\u201d<a id=\"ref8\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ahmad bin Abu Surayj Ar-Raazi states: \u201cI did not see anyone more articulate than Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee. <a id=\"ref9\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Imaam Ahmad bin Hambal said: \u201cImaam Shaafi\u2019ee was from amongst the most eloquent of people.<a id=\"ref10\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>His Piety<\/h4>\n<p>Rabi\u2019 (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) says: \u201cImaam Shaafi\u2019ee (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) used to divide his night into three portions. The first third was for writing, the second third for Salaah and the last third for rest.\u201d Rabi\u2019 (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) also said: \u201cIn the month of Ramadhaan, Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) used to complete the recitation of the Quraan sixty times. It is not however possible to calculate how much of it was accomplished in Salaah.\u201d Rabi\u2019 (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) once said: \u201cImaam Shaafi\u2019i used to complete thirty recitals of the Quraan in every month, but during the month of Ramadhaan, he used to complete sixty besides what he recited during Salaah.\u201d<a id=\"ref11\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ibrahim bin Muhammad As-Shaafi\u2019ee says: \u201cI never saw anyone perform salaah better than Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee (Rahmatullahi Alayh). The reason for this is that he had learnt how to perform salaah from Muslim bin Khaalid, who learnt from ibn Jurayj, who learnt from Ataa\u2019, who learnt from ibn Zubayr, who learnt from Abu Bakr (Radhiallahu Anhu), who learnt from Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).<a id=\"ref12\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ahmad bin Abbas An-Nasaai says that I heard Imaam Ahmad bin Hambal saying on many occasions: \u201cThe slave of Allah Ta\u2019ala, Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee, said: \u201cI did not see anyone follow the Hadith as strictly as Imaam Shafi\u2019ee did.\u201d<a id=\"ref13\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Glad Tidings<\/h4>\n<p>Hafiz Jalaalud Deen Suyooti (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) says that the Ulama have mentioned that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) had issued glad tidings in favour of Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) in the following manner: \u201cDo not talk ill of the Quraysh, as an Aalim of the Quraysh would (in the near future) fill the entire world with ilm (knowledge).\u201d The Ulama say that this glad tiding was in reference to Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee (Rahmatullahi Alaihi).<a id=\"ref14\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ibnu Abdil Hakam says that when the mother of Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) was pregnant with him, she saw a dream as though she gave birth to a star that became apparent in Egypt, and thereafter a piece of it landed in every town. The interpreters of dreams interpreted this dream as meaning that she will give birth to an Aalim, whose knowledge will be exclusive for the people of Egypt at first, and then it will spread throughout the world.\u201d<a id=\"ref15\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>His intelligence<\/h4>\n<p>Imaam Muzani (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) reports: \u201cOn one ocassion we were present by Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) when an old man wearing woollen clothing appeared. The old man then asked Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee: May I ask a question?\u201d Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee gave him permission. He then asked: \u201cWhat are the Shar\u2019ee proofs in the Deen of Allah Ta\u2019ala?\u201d Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee replied: \u201cThe Kitaab of Allah Ta\u2019ala.\u201d He then asked: \u201cAnd what else?\u201d Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee replied: \u201cThe Sunnah of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). He then asked: \u201cAnd what else?\u201d Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee replied: \u201cThe consensus of the Ummah.\u201d He then asked: \u201cWhat is your proof for this?\u201d Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee thought for a while. The old man then said: \u201cI give you respite for three days, either you bring me proof from the Qur\u2019an, or seek forgiveness and repent to Allah Ta\u2019ala.\u201d The facial complexion of Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee changed. He then went and did not come out until the third day between Zuhr and Asr, in the condition that he was extremely sick. He hardly sat down when the old man came, greeted him and sat beside him. He then asked for his proof. Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee said: \u201cYes\u201d, and he began reciting the verses:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"RTL\" style=\"font-family: 'traditional arabic'; font-size: 16pt; text-align: center;\">\u0648\u064e\u0645\u064e\u0646 \u064a\u064f\u0634\u0627\u0642\u0650\u0642\u0650 \u0627\u0644\u0631\u0651\u064e\u0633\u0648\u0644\u064e \u0645\u0650\u0646 \u0628\u064e\u0639\u062f\u0650 \u0645\u0627 \u062a\u064e\u0628\u064e\u064a\u0651\u064e\u0646\u064e \u0644\u064e\u0647\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0647\u064f\u062f\u0649\u0670 \u0648\u064e\u064a\u064e\u062a\u0651\u064e\u0628\u0650\u0639 \u063a\u064e\u064a\u0631\u064e \u0633\u064e\u0628\u064a\u0644\u0650 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u064f\u0624\u0645\u0650\u0646\u064a\u0646\u064e \u0646\u064f\u0648\u064e\u0644\u0650\u0651\u0647\u0650 \u0645\u0627 \u062a\u064e\u0648\u064e\u0644\u0651\u0649\u0670 \u0648\u064e\u0646\u064f\u0635\u0644\u0650\u0647\u0650 \u062c\u064e\u0647\u064e\u0646\u0651\u064e\u0645\u064e \u0648\u064e\u0633\u0627\u0621\u064e\u062a \u0645\u064e\u0635\u064a\u0631\u064b\u0627 \u00a0(\u0633\u0648\u0631\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0646\u0633\u0627\u0621: 115)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>And whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to him and follows a path other than the path of the believers, we shall (forsake him) and let him continue on his path, and thereafter We shall drive him towards Hell, and evil it is as an abode. (Surah Nisa, 115)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The man said: \u201cYou have spoken the truth.\u201d The man then left. Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee said to those seated around him: \u201cI recited the entire Qur\u2019an thrice daily for three days, until the proof finally dawned upon me.\u201d<a id=\"ref16\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Imaam Ahmad bin Hambal said: \u201cA scholar of Hadith can never get satiated from studying the kitaabs of Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee (due to the abundant and profound knowledge contained in it). <a id=\"ref17\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Imaam Ahmad bin Hambal said: \u201cThe fuqahaa were the doctors, and the Muhadditheen were the pharmacists. Muhammad bin Idrees (Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee) came as both a doctor and a pharmacist.<a id=\"ref18\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>His Ikhlaas, Humility and Love for Brotherhood<\/h4>\n<p>Imaam Rabee\u2019 mentions that Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) said: \u201cIt is my desire that people learn and take benefit from the knowledge (in my kitaabs), without anything being attributed to me.\u201d<a id=\"ref19\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Younus As-Sadafi says: \u201cI did not see anyone more intelligent than Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee. I debated with him on one occasion regarding a certain mas\u2019ala, then we separated. He thereafter took hold of my hand and said: \u201cO Abu Musa, why can\u2019t we still remain closely attached as brothers, even though I notice that we do not agree on certain issues.<a id=\"ref20\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rabi\u2019 bin Sulaymaan (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) says that his <em>ustaadh<\/em> Imaam Shafiee (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) would say to him out of love and affection, \u201cIf I could transform <em>Ilm (knowledge) <\/em>into food and feed it to you I would do so.\u201d <a id=\"ref21\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Allamah Subki (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) mentions that on one occasion Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee explained a mas\u2019ala to Rabee bin Sulaymaan Al-Muraadi thirty nine times, yet he still did not understand it. Rabee then woke up and left the gathering out of shame. After the lesson Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee called him in seclusion and explained to him with extreme love and affection in the manner he had explained it during the thrity nine times. On the fortieth time, Rabee bin Sulaymaan understood it.<a id=\"ref22\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Adab (Respect)<\/h4>\n<p>Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) used to say, \u201cI would turn the pages of the kitaabs in a soft and silent manner in the presence of Imaam Maalik (Rahmatullahi Alaihi), so that the sound of the pages turning would not disturb him.\u201d<a id=\"ref23\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Imaam Rabee (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) mentioned, \u201cI did not have the courage to even drink a sip of water in the presence of my <em>ustaadh<\/em>, Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) out of respect for him.\u201d<a id=\"ref24\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>The Statement of Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee<\/h4>\n<p>Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) says:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"RTL\" style=\"font-family: 'traditional arabic'; font-size: 16pt; text-align: center;\">\u0627\u0644\u062c\u062f \u064a\u062f\u0646\u0649 \u0643\u0644 \u0627\u0645\u0631 \u0634\u0627\u0633\u0639\u064d \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u0648\u0627\u0644\u062c\u062f\u0651 \u064a\u0641\u062a\u062d \u0643\u0644 \u0628\u0627\u0628 \u0645\u063a\u0644\u0642\u064d<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 0.85em; line-height: 1.6em;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>After making an effort, man is able to accomplish any difficult task he wishes, just as a closed door is opened after some effort.<a id=\"ref25\" href=\"..\/?p=7169\/#25\"><sup>[25]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h4>The Durood of Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee<\/h4>\n<p>Ibn Bunaan Asbahaani (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) says: \u201cI once saw Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) in a dream and asked him, \u2018O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), has any special honour been granted to Muhammad ibn Idrees Shaafi\u2019ee (Rahmatullahi Alaihi), who is the son of your \u2018uncle\u2019? (\u2018Uncle\u2019 has been mentioned because Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee\u2019s ancestory meets Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)\u2019s ancestory at Abd Yazeed ibn Hishaam. Hishaam was the great grandfather of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)). Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied: \u201cYes indeed. I have supplicated to Allah Ta\u2019ala that he be saved from the reckoning on the day of Qiyaamah.\u201d I then asked, \u201cO Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), on account of which deed did he become worthy of such a favour?\u201d Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied: \u201cIt is because he has recited such a durood upon me that no one else ever recited.\u201d I then enquired: \u201cO Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), what is that durood?\u201d Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"RTL\" style=\"font-family: 'traditional arabic'; font-size: 16pt; text-align: center;\">\u0627\u0644\u0644\u0651\u0647\u064f\u0645\u064e\u0651 \u0635\u064e\u0644\u0650\u0651 \u0639\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0649 \u0645\u064f\u062d\u064e\u0645\u064e\u0651\u062f\u064d \u0643\u064f\u0644\u064e\u0651\u0645\u064e\u0627 \u0630\u064e\u0643\u064e\u0631\u064e\u0647\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0630\u064e\u0651\u0627\u0643\u0650\u0631\u064f\u0648\u0646\u064e \u0648\u064e \u0635\u064e\u0644\u0650\u0651 \u0639\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0649 \u0645\u064f\u062d\u064e\u0645\u064e\u0651\u062f\u064d \u0643\u064f\u0644\u064e\u0651\u0645\u064e\u0627 \u063a\u064e\u0641\u064e\u0644\u064e \u0639\u064e\u0646 \u0630\u0650\u0643\u0652\u0631\u0650\u0647\u0650 \u0627\u0644\u0652\u063a\u064e\u0627\u0641\u0650\u0644\u064f\u0648\u0646\u064e<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>O Allah Ta\u2019ala! Bestow special mercy upon Hadhrat Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) equivalent to the number of times that he was remembered, and bestow special mercy upon Hadhrat Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) equivalent to the number of times that the neglectful forgot to remember him.\u00a0<\/em>(Fazaail Durood)<\/p>\n<p>It is mentioned that after the demise of Imaam Shaafi\u2019ee (Rahmatullahi Alaihi), someone had seen him in a dream and asked him the reason for being pardoned by Allah Ta\u2019ala. And shower your choicest mercy and blessings on the master of the worlds, Hadhrat Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) according to the number of people who did not recite durood upon Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). And shower your choicest mercy and blessings on the master of the worlds, Hadhrat Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) in the manner that You have commanded that durood be recited upon him.
