Zul Hijjah is from the four sacred months of the Islamic calendar. The four sacred months are Zul Qa\u2019dah, Zul Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab.[1]<\/sup> The rewards of good deeds carried out in these months are multiplied, and the sins committed in these months are also regarded as more serious.[2]<\/sup> Allah Ta\u2018ala says:<\/p>\n

The number of months in the sight of Allah Ta\u2018ala is twelve (in a year), so ordained by Him the day He created the heavens and the earth; from among them four are sacred.<\/em><\/p>\n

The greatness of the first ten days and nights of Zul Hijjah can be gauged by the fact that Allah Ta\u2018ala had taken a qasm on the first ten nights of Zul Hijjah in the Quraan Majeed, and special virtues have been recorded in the Ahaadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) regarding these days. Allah Ta\u2018ala says:<\/p>\n

(I take an oath) by the break of dawn and by the ten nights (of Zul Hijjah)<\/em><\/p>\n

Sunnats and Aadaab of Zul Hijjah<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Exert yourself in ibaadah during the first ten days of Zul Hijjah. Great rewards have been mentioned regarding the ibaadah carried out during these ten days.<\/p>\n

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbaas (radhiyallahu \u2018anhuma) reports that Hazrat Nabi (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cThere is no righteous action carried out in any day of the year that is more virtuous than the righteous action carried out in these ten days of Zul Hijjah.\u201d The Sahaabah (radhiyallahu \u2018anhum) asked, \u201cNot even jihaad?\u201d Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) replied, \u201cNot even jihaad, except for the one who endangers his life and wealth (in jihaad) and does not return with anything (i.e. the jihaad carried out in the ten days of Zul Hijjah is more virtuous than jihaad during the rest of the year, except for the jihaad of the mujaahid who gains martyrdom).\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

2. Try to fast during the first ten days. \u00a0By fasting on any of the first ten days of Zul Hijjah (besides the tenth), you will receive the reward of fasting the entire year.[3]<\/sup><\/p>\n

3. Endeavour to make as much ibaadah as possible during the first ten nights of Zul Hijjah. Making ibaadah on these nights earns one the reward of making ibaadah on Lailatul Qadr.<\/p>\n

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cThere are no days in the year wherein the worship of Allah Ta\u2018ala is more beloved to Him than the ten days of Zul Hijjah. The fast during these days (excluding the tenth) is equivalent to the fast of an entire year, and standing up in ibaadah during these nights is equivalent to the reward of the night of Qadr (power).\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Hazrat Hafsah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) would not leave out four actions; fasting on the day of Aashuraa, fasting on the first ten days of Zul Hijjah (i.e. besides the 10th), fasting three days of every month; and performing two rakaats sunnah before the fardh of Fajr.<\/em><\/p>\n

4. Nabi (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) has mentioned that Paradise becomes waajib for that person who worships Allah Ta\u2018ala on five nights. i.e. the night of Tarwiyah (8th<\/sup>of Zul Hijjah), the night of Arafah (9th<\/sup>\u00a0of Zul Hijjah), the night of Nahr (10th<\/sup>\u00a0of Zul Hijjah), the night of Eidul Fitr and the night of the 15th<\/sup>\u00a0of Sha\u2019baan.<\/p>\n

Hazrat Muaaz bin Jabal (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cThe one who enlivens five nights of the year with ibaadah, Jannah becomes compulsory for him. (These five nights are) the night of Tarwiyah (8th of Zul Hijjah), the night of Arafah (9th of Zul Hijjah), the night of Nahr (10th of Zul Hijjah), the night of Eidul Fitr and the night of the 15th of Sha\u2019baan.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

5. It is mustahab for one (who is not in the state of ihraam) to fast on the day of Arafah i.e. 9th<\/sup>of Zul Hijjah. Apart from receiving the reward of one year\u2019s fast, two years\u2019 sins will also be forgiven.[5]<\/sup><\/p>\n

Hazrat Abu Qataadah (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) reports that a Sahaabi once asked Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam), \u201cO Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam), what is the reward of the person who fasts on the day of Aashuraa?\u201d Nabi (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) replied, \u201cIt carries the reward of fasting for an entire year.\u201d The Sahaabi then asked, \u201cWhat is the reward of fasting on the day of Arafah?\u201d Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) replied, \u201cIt expiates the (minor) sins of the present year and the previous year.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Hazrat Ibnu Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhuma) reports, \u201cI performed hajj with Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) and Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) did not fast on the day of Arafah (during the hajj). I performed hajj with Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) and he also did not fast on the day of Arafah (during the hajj). Similarly, I performed hajj with Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu), and he also did not fast on the day of Arafah (during the hajj), and I then performed hajj with Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu), and he accordingly did not fast on the day of Arafah (during the hajj).\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

6. On the day of Arafah, recite the following dua abundantly:<\/p>\n

There is no deity besides Allah Ta\u2018ala alone, who has no partner. To Him belongs the kingdom (of the entire universe), and only for Him belongs all praise. In His hands (control) alone lies all good and He alone has complete power over everything.<\/em><\/p>\n
