He strove, throughout his life, to teach the Mubaarak Ahaadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and propagate it to the ummah.

From the time he was a student, Moulana Khaleel Ahmad (rahimahullah) had a desire to write a commentary on the Sunan of Imaam Abu Dawood (rahimahullah). The reason was that Imaam Abu Dawood (rahimahullah) did not only present the Ahaadith in the style of a Muhaddith, but also arranged the Ahaadith under chapters which reflected the fiqhi masaa’il that are deduced from the Ahaadith. Hence, there was a need to prepare a commentary which would explain how the masaa’il are deduced from the Ahaadith, as well as the views of the Imaams of the four mazhabs in light of the Ahaadith.

This desire finally materialised towards the end of his life. Moulana Khaleel Ahmad (rahimahullah) commenced writing this commentary, named “Bazl-ul-Majhood”, in 1335AH, and completed it in 1345 AH, two months before his demise in Madinah Munawwarah. This commentary took ten years, five months and ten days to complete, and comprised of approximately two thousand pages divided between five volumes. In fulfilling this monumental work, the person who remained at his side and assisted him was none other than his beloved student, Hazrat Shaikhul Hadith Moulana Muhammed Zakariyya Kaandhelwi (rahimahullah).

Mufti Aashiq Ilaahi (rahimahullah) mentioned in Tazkiratul Khaleel:

When Moulana Khaleel Ahmad (rahimahullah) completed Bazl-ul-Majhood, he felt that a commentary of Sunan Tirmizi should also be written, in the same style as Bazl-ul-Majhood, as Sunan Tirmizi was also taught in the madrasahs as part of the curriculum, and it also required a commentary, similar to the commentary of Sunan Abu Dawood. (At that time, Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya (rahimahullah) was in India, and Moulana Khaleel Ahmad (rahimahullah) was in Madinah Munawwarah.) Moulana Khaleel Ahmad (rahimahullah) thus wrote to Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya (rahimahullah), asking him to commence with this task in the name of Allah Ta‘ala. Moulana Khaleel Ahmad (rahimahullah) wrote, “I hope that this may also be included in my book of deeds.”

However, Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya (rahimahullah) did not commence as he wanted Moulana Khaleel Ahmad (rahimahullah) to be the one to commence the kitaab. When he would mention this to Moulana Khaleel Ahmad (rahimahullah), then Moulana Khaleel Ahmad (rahimahullah) would write to him saying, “It is difficult for me to do this work without you. To once again obtain the many kitaabs required for this work, and to search for the different discussions and references from the appropriate kitaabs is a work that can only be done by you.”

Eventually, Moulana Khaleel Ahmad (rahimahullah) wrote to him saying, “Very well, leave the first page blank and commence writing from the second page. You are fully acquainted with the manner and style of writing required for this work, and you are already qualified to render this service to the Hadith. If we happen to meet at some time in the future, I will write the first page of the commentary.”

However, Moulana Khaleel Ahmad’s (rahimahullah) blessed life was close to its end, and he was destined to depart from this world with the reward of having had this desire and intention. Therefore, this work did not commence, and before we knew it, we suddenly received a telegram informing us that he had passed away at the very place (in Madinah Munawwarah) where he used to engage in his Hadith work.

Moulana Khaleel Ahmad (rahimahullah) had a natural affinity, passion and love for Hadith, and so whenever he heard of the existence of any Hadith manuscript anywhere, he would try to purchase it, no matter how much it cost. If he could not purchase it, he would transcribe it.

When Moulana Khaleel Ahmad (rahimahullah) went for his sixth haj in the year 1338 A.H. and reached Makkah Mukarramah, he heard of a person who had a handwritten copy of the 3rd and 4th volumes of the Hadith Kitaab Musannaf Abdur Razzaaq. He wanted to purchase these volumes for the madrasah, but the owner wanted 20 guineas (20 gold coins) which he did not have. As a result, Moulana (rahimahullah) was very sad at his inability to obtain such a rare book.

Seeing his grief, Moulana Muhammed Zakariyya, Haaji Anees Ahmad, Moulana Muhammad Ishaaq (rahimahumullah) and a few of their other companions said, “If our entire group takes up the courage, we can distribute the kitaab into portions between us and we can all transcribe one portion.”

Initially, Moulana Khaleel Ahmad (rahimahullah) was worried that this task would be difficult for them, but when he saw Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya’s (rahimahullah) courage and determination, he sought the owner’s permission to transcribe it. The owner was convinced that the kitaabs could not be transcribed, and so he thought to himself, “Why should I refuse?” Thus, he gladly gave them permission.

The different parts were distributed among his companions, and within a few days, both volumes were transcribed. The original contained many mistakes, so Moulana Khaleel Ahmad (rahimahullah) himself, assisted by Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya (rahimahullah), began comparing the original with the copy and corrected some of the mistakes. The original was thereafter returned to its owner, and the handwritten copy was given to the madrasah.

From this incident, we see the deep love which Moulana Khaleel Ahmad (rahimahullah) had for the blessed Hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). In the service of the Mubaarak Hadith, he considered no task too difficult, but rather dedicated his time, energy and life to propagating the Blessed Hadith. This was purely out of his great love for Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).

(Tazkiratul Khaleel pg. 268, 272, 281-282)

Hazrat Moulana Khaleel Ahmad Sahaaranpuri (rahimahullah) had great love for the Mubaarak Hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).
