Testifying to the Kalimah signifies imaan (true faith) which is the essence of all good deeds in Islam.

From these three actions, bringing imaan has been mentioned last, even though it comes first in rank, as it is the basis for the acceptance for every action a person carries out. Probably, the reason for mentioning it last is to indicate that the first two should be carried out with imaan which relates to the heart. Whatever action a person carries out, it should conform to imaan.

The second group is the unsuccessful servants. The characteristics of the second group are that they (1) are miserly with their wealth to such an extent that they even fail to discharge the zakaat and other monetary obligations, (2) they deem themselves independent and self-sufficient rather than obeying Allah Ta‘ala and fulfilling His commands, (3) and they reject the best word (i.e. they reject the Kalimah Tayyibah).

فَسَنُیَسِّرُہٗ لِلۡیُسۡرٰی ؕ﴿۷﴾

then We will make easy for him (to tread upon) the easy path (leading to Jannah).

The word “yusra” literally denotes “ease and comfort” or “a thing in which there is no difficulty”, but in this verse, it refers to Jannah.

In other words, the meaning of this verse is that the one who treads on the path of guidance, We will make the path to Jannah easy for him.

The word “usra” is the opposite of “yusra” and denotes “extreme distress and difficulty”, but in this verse, it refers to Jahannum (hellfire).

In other words, the one who treads on the wrong path, We will make the path to Jahannum easy for him.

These two verses, regarding the two categories of servants, signify that those who exert their efforts in the direction of Jannah or Jahannum, then Allah Ta‘ala will make it easy for them to perform such deeds that will lead them to the destination they are moving towards.

This does not mean that Allah Ta‘ala is going to force them to do such actions, rather it means that such actions will become easy for them through their own choice.

According to some Mufassireen, both these verses show that the nature of both groups of people will become such that they will feel comfortable doing such deeds which will lead to their destination in the Hereafter – either Jannah or Jahannum.

In one Hadith, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) mentioned,

Perform deeds, for everyone will have the deeds of what he was created for (Paradise or Hell) made easy for him. None will enter it but the most wretched one – the one who rejected (the truth) and turned away (from it).

This verse describes the fire of Hell. It is quite clear that only a kaafir will reject Allah Ta‘ala and His Messenger (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). Thus, the apparent meaning of this verse is that only a disbeliever will enter the fire of Hell, whereas the Qur’aan and Hadith are replete with clear texts mentioning that a sinful believer will also enter Hell (unless he had repented, or someone interceded for him, or he was forgiven out of the pure Grace of Allah Ta‘ala).

After a believer enters Hell, he will abide in it until he has received punishment for the sins he has committed. After paying for his sins, he will be taken out of Hell, and through the blessings of his faith, he will be admitted into Paradise.

Apparently, the wording of the verse is contrary to this interpretation, as the apparent wording of these verses show that only the one who rejected the truth and turned away from it will enter Jahannum. Therefore, it is necessary for the interpretation of this verse under discussion to conform with other Qur’aanic verses and the authentic Ahaadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).

Therefore, the interpretation will be that this verse refers to the disbelievers who are regarded as the most wretched people from the creation. When Allah Ta‘ala says, “None will enter it but the most wretched one”, this “entering” refers to entering it and remaining in it forever. Hence, this verse is exclusive to the disbelievers, as their torture in Jahannum will continue forever.

As for the sinful believers, they will receive punishment for their sins and will eventually – at some time or the other – be taken out of Hell.

All of the Blessed Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) will be Saved from Jahannum

It should be born in mind that all the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) will be saved from the fire of Jahannum. The reason for this is that the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) rarely committed sins. Furthermore, even if they committed a sin, they would immediately repent for it out of the great fear they possessed in their hearts for the punishment in the Hereafter.

Over and above this, if any of them committed a sin, his good deeds are so many that they can wipe out the sin, as the Qur’aan Majeed says:

اِنَّ الۡحَسَنٰتِ یُذۡہِبۡنَ السَّیِّاٰتِ

Surely good deeds erase bad deeds. He is being referred to in this verse as the most God–fearing person as it is well known that he was the greatest person of this ummah.

Hence, Allah Ta‘ala speaks about the reward of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), who is the most God-fearing person, as opposed to the punishment of the most wretched person which was mentioned in the previous verse. The word “atqa” comes on the superlative degree and signifies a man of taqwa who is most God-fearing.

Thus, the meaning of this verse is that the most God-fearing person (Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq [radhiyallahu ‘anhu]), who spends his wealth in the obedience of his Lord in order to purify himself from sins, will be kept far away from the fire of Hell.

Ibnu Abi Haatim reports from Hazrat Urwah (rahimahullah) that seven Muslims had been enslaved by the disbelievers of Makkah Mukarramah and were being persecuted and tortured by them in various ways.
