A few days after the Muslims emerged from the Valley of Abu Taalib, Abu Taalib passed away. This was during the month of Ramadhaan or Shawwaal in the tenth year after Nubuwwah. Three or five days after the demise of Abu Taalib, Hazrat Khadijah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) also passed away.<\/p>\n
When Abu Taalib was close to breathing his last, Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) came to him. At that time, Abu Jahal and \u2018Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah were also present at his bedside. Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) encouraged Abu Taalib saying, \u201cO my uncle! Recite the kalimah Laa ilaaha illallaah just once so that I will have a basis to intercede for you before Allah.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hearing this, Abu Jahal and \u2018Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah immediately interrupted and said, \u201cO Abu Taalib! Are you renouncing the religion of \u2018Abdul Muttalib?\u201d Hence, Abu Taalib refused to recite the kalimah, and the last words on his tongue, before passing away, were, \u201cOn the religion of \u2018Abdul Muttalib (in other words, I am passing away on the religion of \u2018Abdul Muttalib).\u201d Saying these words, Abu Taalib passed away.<\/p>\n
After Abu Taalib passed away, Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cI will continue to make du\u2018aa for his forgiveness, so long as I am not prohibited from doing so by Allah Ta\u2018ala.\u201d Upon this, the following verse of the Qur\u2019aan Majeed was revealed:<\/p>\n

It is not (permissible) for the Prophet and the believers to seek forgiveness for the disbelievers, even if they are relatives, after it became clear to them that they are the people of Jahannum.
