Yet, many of them had such love for Makkah Mukarramah, Madinah Munawwarah and Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) that they were prepared to undergo poverty and hardship, yet they could not bear to leave the Holy Lands.

Below is a very touching incident mentioned by Moulana Zafar Ahmed Uthmaani (rahimahullah), explaining the deep love which a young boy had for Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and the blessed city of Madinah Munawwarah. Moulana Zafar Ahmed Uthmaani (rahimahullah) says:

Once, I had performed Haj, and after completing my haj, I came to Madinah Munawwarah. My companions and I had our meal, and then dusted our dastarkhaan (eating cloth) outside and also placed some pieces of bread for the birds to eat.

After some time, when I emerged from my room, I was surprised to see a young child, who was eight or nine years old, picking up the pieces of bread and eating them. His condition of poverty touched my heart, so I decided to take him into my room and feed him. I thought to myself that it is only befitting that I show sympathy to this poor child, as I am in the city of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) – that blessed personality (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) who took care of the poor and the slaves.

Seeing the manner in which I had treated him, the young boy was very affected. As he was leaving, I asked him, “What does your father do for a living?” The boy replied, “I do not have a father as I am an orphan.”

I then asked him, “Would you like to come with me to India and stay with me? There in India, I will feed you good food and dress you in good clothing. I will educate you in our madrasah. When you have graduated as an Aalim, I will personally bring you back to Madinah Munawwarah and return you to your mother. Go to your mother and ask her for permission to come with me.”

The boy was very happy with my suggestion and ran to his mother. The poor widow was already in difficulty, having to personally take care of all her children, so she immediately agreed to let him come with me. The boy quickly returned to me and said, “I will come with you to India. My mother has given me permission.”

The boy then asked me, “In your land of India, do you also get this type of chana (chickpea) which we have here in Madinah Munawwarah?” I replied, “My dear child! You will get all of these things there in large amounts!”

The boy then took hold of my finger and walked with me to Musjidun Nabawi. As we approached, he suddenly stood still. He looked at the Rowdhah Mubaarak and the door of the Musjid and asked me, “Father! Will we also find this door and this Rowdhah there in India?” I said to him, “Son, if these were found there in India, then why would I come here?”

Hearing this, the boy’s expression changed. He let go of my finger and said, “Father, you go, but I will not come. If these cannot be found there in India, then I will never ever leave this door and go away. I will remain hungry and thirsty. I will satiate my hunger and quench my thirst by gazing at this door, as I have been doing all this time.”

The young boy then began to weep, and seeing his deep love for Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), Musjidun Nabawi and the blessed city of Madinah Munawwarah, I also began to weep.

(Ishq-e-Rasool [sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam] aur Ulamaa-e-Deoband pg. 185-187)

In the initial period when the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was founded, the country was not financially prosperous, as the oil wells had not yet been discovered.
