The pious farmer had a few animals on his farm and also grew some crops. He had a cow from which he would get milk, a few chickens from which he would get eggs, and a donkey which he would use to plough the field before sowing the seeds and growing the crops.

The pious farmer and his family led a simple life and were happy on their farm. They always thanked Allah Ta‘ala for what He had given them, and if they went through any difficulty or problem, they would turn to Allah Ta‘ala in dua and trust in Him to look after them.

One day, a fox came to the farm in the middle of the night, sneaking quietly in the darkness. The fox crept into the henhouse, causing the hens to make a noise out of fear and fright. The farmer heard the noise the hens were making and came running with a large spade in his hand, but before he could reach the henhouse, the fox had already killed the farmer’s few chickens, picked them up with its mouth, and ran away to eat them.

The farmer was sad and disappointed over this tragedy, but he recited the dua which is sunnah to recite at the time of a tragedy:

إِنَّا لِلّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُوْنْ اَللّٰهُمَّ أْجُرْنِيْ فِيْ مُصِيْبَتِيْ وَأَخْلِفْ لِيْ خَيْرًا مِّنْهَا

To Allah alone do we belong, and to Him alone we will return – O Allah! Without their donkey, they could not plough the fields, and without their hens, they did not have any eggs to eat.

Just a few nights later, the third tragedy occurred. This time, it was a large and ferocious lion that came to the farm. When the farmer heard its thundering roar, he was so frightened that he did not even go out of the house to try and chase it away. The farmer only came out of his house the next morning, and when he came to the cow’s enclosure, he saw that the lion had killed it and eaten half of its body.

Once again, the farmer hoped for reward from Allah Ta‘ala for making sabr, hoped that some good would come out from this tragedy, and recited the sunnah dua:

إِنَّا لِلّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُوْنْ اَللّٰهُمَّ أْجُرْنِيْ فِيْ مُصِيْبَتِيْ وَأَخْلِفْ لِيْ خَيْرًا مِّنْهَا

To Allah alone do we belong, and to Him alone we will return – O Allah! Grant me reward in this calamity of mine, and grant me something better than what I lost!

At this point, the farmer could no longer remain on the farm. Not only was it difficult, without the hens, donkey and cow, but it was also too dangerous, with the lion and wolf coming to attack his animals in the night. So, the farmer took his family and moved to another place, far away, to start a new farm.

At first, the farmer and his family were sad, as they had spent many years living at the old farm and missed it. Also, they had to start growing crops on the new farm from scratch, as the fields were completely empty. They had to work hard and slowly save money to buy another hen, donkey and cow as well. However, they thanked Allah Ta‘ala and were grateful, as they knew that things could always be worse.

One day, a few months after the farmer had settled into his new farm, he was digging in the field when his spade hit something hard and made a loud sound. The farmer removed the soil, to see what his spade had hit, and to his amazement, he found a very large piece of gold, the size of a large rock! This piece of gold was so valuable that it was worth more than his old farm with all the animals that he had! Since he was staying in a non-Muslim land, and was occupying a farm that was not owned by anyone before, he could keep the gold that he found. Allah Ta‘ala had accepted his dua and had granted him this gold which was far better than what he had lost.

Then, a little later, the farmer received a message telling him that a few days ago, a wildfire had broken out near his old farm. The wildfire had spread so quickly that before anyone had even realized what was happening, it had burnt his old farm down to the ground.

When the farmer heard this, he realized that all the tragedies he had went through – the first being the fox killing his hen, the second being the wolf killing his donkey, and the third being the lion killing his cow – all these tragedies had actually been a blessing in disguise.

If these things had not happened, he would not have come to the new farm and found the gold. Also, he would not have left his old farm, and if he had still been living at his old farm, then he together with his family would have all been caught in the wildfire and would have probably died.

The pious farmer told his family of what had happened, and they all thanked Allah Ta‘ala, realizing that the difficulties they had went through had actually been a blessing in disguise. Not only did those difficulties cause them to come to the new farm and find the gold, and be saved from burning in the wildfire in this world, but because they had made sabr and remained pleased with Allah Ta‘ala – they had hope that Allah Ta‘ala would grant them great reward in the Hereafter as well.

Lessons:

When we undergo any difficulty or calamity, we must recite the sunnah dua, and trust in Allah Ta‘ala to look after us.
