Hazrat Mu\u2019aaz bin Jabal (radhiyallahu\u00a0\u2018anhu) mentions, \u201cOnce, I was seated behind Rasulullah (sallallahu\u00a0\u2018alaihi\u00a0wasallam) on a donkey while he was riding it. There was nothing between me and Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) besides the wood of the saddle (which separates the rider from the person seated behind him).<\/p>\n

\u201cRasulullah (sallallahu\u00a0alaihi\u00a0wasallam) addressed me saying, \u2018O Mu\u2019aaz!\u2019 I replied, \u2018I am present in your service, O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu\u00a0alaihi\u00a0wasallam).\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cRasulullah (sallallahu\u00a0alaihi\u00a0wasallam) remained silent and continued to ride the animal. After a little while, Rasulullah (sallallahu\u00a0alaihi\u00a0wasallam) again addressed me saying, \u2018O Mu\u2019aaz!\u2019 I replied, \u2018I am present in your service, O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu\u00a0\u2018alaihi\u00a0wasallam).\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter a little while had passed, Rasulullah (sallallahu\u00a0alaihi\u00a0wasallam) addressed me for the third time saying, \u2018O Mu\u2019aaz!\u2019 I replied, \u2018I am present in your service, O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu\u00a0\u2018alaihi\u00a0wasallam).\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cRasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said to me, \u2018Do you know what\u00a0is the\u00a0right\u00a0of\u00a0Allah\u00a0Ta\u2019ala upon His servants?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI replied, \u2018Allah and His Rasul (sallallahu\u00a0\u2018alaihi\u00a0wasallam) know best (i.e. I do not know).\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cRasulullah (sallallahu\u00a0\u2018alaihi\u00a0wasallam) said, \u2018The right of Allah Ta\u2019ala upon His servants\u00a0is\u00a0that they should worship Him without ascribing any partners to him (i.e. they should carry out all acts of worship solely for His pleasure and they should remain obedient to Him at all times, while refraining from His disobedience).\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThereafter, Rasulullah (sallallahu\u00a0\u2018alaihi\u00a0wasallam) continued to ride the animal and he remained silent for a little while. \u201cRasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) then said to me, \u2018Do you know\u00a0what\u00a0is the right of the servants upon Allah Ta\u2019ala\u00a0if they fulfil what He has commanded them to do (i.e. what is the right of the servants upon Allah Ta\u2019ala if they carry out all acts of worship solely for His pleasure and they remain obedient to Him at all times, while refraining from His disobedience)?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI replied, \u2018Allah and His Rasul (sallallahu\u00a0\u2018alaihi\u00a0wasallam) know best (i.e. I do not know).\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cRasulullah (sallallahu\u00a0\u2018alaihi\u00a0wasallam) then said to me, \u2018The right of the servants upon Allah Ta\u2019ala is that Allah Ta\u2019ala does not punish them and that He enters them into Jannah (i.e. if the servants remain obedient to Allah Ta\u2019ala at all times while refraining from His disobedience, then Allah Ta\u2019ala will not punish His servants by entering them into Jahannum but He will bless them with His divine mercy and enter them into Jannah).\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

From this incident, we see the close relationship\u00a0which Hazrat Mu\u2019aaz bin Jabal (radhiyallahu\u00a0\u2018anhu) enjoyed with Rasulullah (sallallahu\u00a0alaihi\u00a0wasallam).<\/p>\n

The reason for Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) remaining silent thrice after addressing Hazrat Muaaz (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) was in order to create the eagerness and desire within him to hear what Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) was going to teach him.<\/p>\n

Since the issue which Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) wished to teach him was of great importance and paramount significance, Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) adopted this approach when addressing him.<\/p>\n

We also see the high level of respect and honour which Hazrat Muaaz (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) showed to Rasulullah (sallallahu\u00a0alaihi\u00a0wasallam) when speaking to him.<\/p>\n

Hazrat Muaaz (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) responded to Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) with the same degree of fervour and enthusiasm on all three times that Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) addressed him.<\/p>\n
