At the time of supper, they stopped at a place, spread out the dastarkhaan (eating mat) and sat down to eat. Meanwhile, a shepherd passed by with his herd of goats and greeted them saying, \u2018Assalaamu alaikum.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Hazrat Ibnu Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhuma) invited him to eat with them, but he refused saying that he was fasting. At this, Hazrat Ibnu Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhuma) said, \u201cYou are fasting in the desert, in such hot weather, with such a hot wind blowing!\u201d The shepherd replied, \u201cI want to receive my reward for the Ayyaam-ul-Khaaliyah (the days that have passed).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(By saying this, he was referring to the following verse of the Qur\u2019aan Majeed in Surah Al-Haaqqah):<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" dir=\"RTL\" style=\"text-align: center; font-family: 'Traditional Arabic'; font-size: 16pt;\">\u06a9\u064f\u0644\u064f\u0648\u06e1\u0627 \u0648\u064e \u0627\u0634\u06e1\u0631\u064e\u0628\u064f\u0648\u06e1\u0627 \u06c1\u064e\u0646\u0650\u06cc\u06e1\u0653\u0640\u0626\u064b\u06e2\u0627 \u0628\u0650\u0645\u064e\u0627\u06e4\u00a0 \u0627\u064e\u0633\u06e1\u0644\u064e\u0641\u06e1\u062a\u064f\u0645\u06e1 \u0641\u0650\u06cc \u0627\u0644\u06e1\u0627\u064e\u06cc\u0651\u064e\u0627\u0645\u0650 \u0627\u0644\u06e1\u062e\u064e\u0627\u0644\u0650\u06cc\u064e\u06c3\u0650 \ufd3f\u06f2\u06f4\ufd3e<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>(And, it will be said to those in Jannah). \u201cEat and drink with complete<\/em><\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-25525-2\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/ihyaauddeen.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/034-The-Honesty-and-Taqwa-of-a-Shepherd-Slave.mp3?_=2\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/ihyaauddeen.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/034-The-Honesty-and-Taqwa-of-a-Shepherd-Slave.mp3\">https:\/\/ihyaauddeen.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/034-The-Honesty-and-Taqwa-of-a-Shepherd-Slave.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>satisfaction for that which you sent ahead before you in \u2018the days that have passed\u2019.\u201d (Surah Al-Haaqqah v. 24)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hazrat Ibnu Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhuma) then said to the young man in order to test him, \u201cWe want to buy a goat. Name your price and we shall pay it. We shall then slaughter the goat and give you some of its meat for iftaar.\u201d The shepherd said, \u201cThese goats are not mine. I am only a slave and the goats belong to my master.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hazrat Ibnu Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhuma) then said to him, \u201cAnd how will your master come to know? You can tell him that a wolf ate a goat.\u201d At this, the shepherd pointed to the sky and said, \u201cWhat about Allah? (i.e. Allah Ta\u2018ala is watching us at all times, so how can we lie and say that a wolf had eaten a goat?).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hearing these words, Hazrat Ibnu Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhuma) was surprised at the level of taqwa found in this simple shepherd and began to repeat the words he heard from the shepherd saying, \u201cWhere is Allah Ta\u2018ala? Where is Allah Ta\u2018ala? Is he not watching you at all times?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Hazrat Ibnu Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhuma) returned to Madinah Munawwarah after the journey, he bought the slave from his master, together with the herd of goats, freed the slave and gave the entire herd to him as a gift. This was the piety of the shepherds of those times!
