{"id":25289,"date":"2026-02-01T06:17:50","date_gmt":"2026-02-01T04:17:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ihyaauddeen.co.za\/?p=25289"},"modified":"2026-02-02T17:17:17","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T15:17:17","slug":"shabaan-and-laylatul-baraaah-shab-e-baraat-the-orchards-of-love-part-95","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ihyaauddeen.co.za\/?p=25289","title":{"rendered":"Sha\u2019baan and Laylatul Baraa\u2019ah (Shab-e-Baraat)  \u2013 The Orchards of Love \u2013 Part 95"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17012\" src=\"https:\/\/ihyaauddeen.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/tulip.1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ihyaauddeen.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/tulip.1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/ihyaauddeen.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/tulip.1-190x127.jpg 190w, https:\/\/ihyaauddeen.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/tulip.1-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ihyaauddeen.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/tulip.1-310x205.jpg 310w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Currently, we are in the auspicious month of Sha\u2019baan and just a few days away from the mubaarak month of Ramadhaan.<\/p>\n<p>During this month of Sha\u2019baan, Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) would keep abundant nafil fasts more than he would keep in any other month.<\/p>\n<p>Hazrat Usaamah bin Zaid (radhiyallahu \u2018anhuma) reports, \u201cI once said to Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam), \u2018I do not see you fasting in any month as much as I see you fasting in Sha\u2019baan.\u2019 Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) replied, \u2018This is a month (Sha\u2019baan) between Rajab and Ramadhaan in which people are negligent, and it (Sha\u2019baan) is a month in which the (yearly) deeds of the servants are raised to the Lord of the worlds (Allah Ta\u2018ala), and I desire that my deeds be raised while I am fasting.\u2019\u201d<em>(Sunan Nasaai #3357, Targheeb #1537)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Fast of Sha\u2019baan is a Preparation for the Fast of Ramadhaan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) was once asked regarding the most virtuous fast after the fast of Ramadhaan. Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) replied, \u201cThe fast of Sha\u2019baan in honour of the month of Ramadhaan\u201d. <em>(Sunan Tirmizi #663)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It should be borne in mind that the fast of Sha\u2019baan is virtuous when kept to honour and prepare for Ramadhaan. Otherwise, the most virtuous month to fast after Ramadhaan is Muharraam, as it appears in the Authentic Hadith of Sunan Abi Dawood that Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cThe most virtuous fast after Ramadhaan is the fast of Muharram\u201d. <em>(Sunan Abi Dawood #2429) <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hazrat Anas (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) mentioned, \u201cWhen the month of Sha\u2019baan would commence, the Muslims (i.e. The Sahaabah and Taabi\u2019een) would be devoted to the recitation of the Qur\u2019aan.\u201d <em>(Lataa\u2019if-ul-Ma\u2019aarif pg. 258)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Laylatul Baraa\u2019ah \u2013 The Night of Forgiveness and Emancipation from the Fire of Jahannum \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The month of Sha\u2019baan is a month that brings along with it immense goodness and blessings due to Laylatul Baraa\u2019ah (the night of Baraa\u2019ah) being found in it. Baraa\u2019ah means \u2018declaration of forgiveness and emancipation from the fire of Jahannum\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The night of Baraa\u2019ah is an extremely auspicious and virtuous night in which tremendous blessings and mercies of Allah Ta\u2018ala descend upon the ummah, and is among the great nights in the Islamic calendar.<\/p>\n<p>There are many authentic Ahaadith which are reported from Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) regarding the abundant virtues of this auspicious night. Below are some of the virtues:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) Allah Ta\u2018ala Focusing His Special Mercy and Forgiveness Towards the Creation On this Night\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hazrat Mu\u2019aaz bin Jabal (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cAllah Ta\u2018ala focuses (His divine mercy) towards the entire creation on the 15<sup>th<\/sup> night of Sha\u2019baan, and He forgives His entire creation with the exception of those who ascribe partners with Allah Ta\u2018ala and those who harbour malice for the creation.\u201d <em>(Targheeb# 1546)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Special Mercies Descending on the Ummah from the Beginning of the Night until Dawn\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the nights of the year, Allah Ta\u2018ala sends down His special mercy upon the creation during the last third of the night. However, on the night of Baraa\u2019ah, Allah Ta\u2018ala sends down His special mercy from the beginning of the night (sunset) until the time of fajr. Hence, Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) encouraged his ummah to spend this night in ibaadah.<\/p>\n<p>Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cWhen it is the 15<sup>th<\/sup> night of Sha\u2019baan, then stand (in ibaadah) during its night, and fast during its day, as Allah Ta\u2018ala (i.e. the special mercy of Allah Ta\u2018ala) descends to the lowest heaven during this night, from the time of sunset. Allah Ta\u2018ala announces, \u2018Is there anyone seeking forgiveness so that I may forgive him? Is there anyone seeking sustenance so that I may grant him sustenance? Is there anyone afflicted with any difficulty so that I may grant him ease and relief? Is there anyone who has any other need so that I may fulfil it?\u2019 This (call from Allah Ta\u2018ala) continues until the time of Fajr.\u201d <em>(Sunan Ibnu Maajah #1388)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>3) The Entire Year\u2019s Deeds of the Ummah being Presented before Allah Ta\u2018ala On this Night<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said that this month (of Sha\u2019baan) is a month in which the actions of the servants are raised to Allah Ta\u2018ala (i.e on the night of Baraa\u2019ah). <em>(Sunan Nasaai #3357, Targheeb #1537)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Rasulullah <\/strong><strong>(sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) Desiring that His Deeds be Presented before Allah Ta\u2018ala while He is Fasting\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said,\u00a0\u201cI desire that my deeds are raised (and presented before Allah Ta\u2018ala on this night of Baraa\u2019ah) while I am fasting.\u201d <em>(Sunan Nasaai #3357, Targheeb #1537, Tayseer 2\/77)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>5) Rasulullah <\/strong><strong>(sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) Desiring that the Decision of His Death Take Place While He is Fasting\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cAllah Ta\u2018ala decides (in this month of Sha\u2019baan, on the night of Baraa\u2019ah,) who is going to pass away that year. I desire that (the decision of) my death take place while I am fasting.\u201d <em>(Musnad Abu Ya\u2019laa #4911, Targheeb #1540)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>6) Allah Ta\u2018ala Freeing People from Jahannum Equal to the Strands of Hair On the Animals of Bani Kalb<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cDuring this night, Allah Ta\u2018ala frees many servants from the fire of Jahannum \u2013 equal to the number of the strands of hair on the goats and sheep of the Banu Kalb tribe.\u201d <em>(Shu\u2019abul Imaan #3556, Sunan Tirmizi #739)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>7) Jannah Being Compulsory for the Person who Worships Allah Ta\u2018ala On this Night<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cThe one who enlivens five nights of the year with ibaadah, Jannah becomes compulsory for him. (These five nights are) the night of Tarwiyah (8<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0of Zul Hijjah), the night of Arafah (9<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0of Zul Hijjah), the night of Nahr (10<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0of Zul Hijjah), the night of Eidul Fitr and the night of the 15<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0of Sha\u2019baan.\u201d\u00a0<em>(Targheeb #1656)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Manner in which Rasulullah <\/strong><strong>(sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) Worshipped Allah Ta\u2018ala On this Night<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) would exert himself in ibaadah and dua during the night of Baraa\u2019ah.<\/p>\n<p>Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) reports, \u201cRasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said to me (on the night of Baraa\u2019ah), \u2018O Aaishah! Will you let me go and stand up in ibaadah tonight?\u2019 I replied, \u2018Yes \u2013 may my father and mother be sacrificed for you!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) then stood in salaah. When he went into sajdah, he remained in sajdah for such a long portion of the night that I thought that he had passed away. I thus stood up to touch him (to see that he had not passed away). I placed my hand on the soles of his blessed feet (which were together in sajdah), and his body moved. I was then filled with happiness (to see that he was alive).\u201d\u00a0<em>(Shu\u2019abul Imaan #3556)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dua to be Recited on Shab-e-Baraat<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) reports, \u201cWhen Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) was in sajdah during the night of Baraa\u2019ah, I heard him recite the following dua:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" dir=\"RTL\" style=\"text-align: center; font-family: 'Traditional Arabic'; font-size: 16pt;\">\u0623\u064e\u0639\u064f\u0648\u0652\u0630\u064f \u0628\u0650\u0639\u064e\u0641\u0652\u0648\u0650\u0643\u064e \u0645\u0650\u0646\u0652 \u0639\u0650\u0642\u064e\u0627\u0628\u0650\u0643\u064e \u0648\u064e\u0623\u064e\u0639\u064f\u0648\u0652\u0630\u064f \u0628\u0650\u0631\u0650\u0636\u064e\u0627\u0643\u064e \u0645\u0650\u0646\u0652 \u0633\u064e\u062e\u064e\u0637\u0650\u0643\u064e \u0648\u064e\u0623\u064e\u0639\u064f\u0648\u0652\u0630\u064f \u0628\u0650\u0643\u064e \u0645\u0650\u0646\u0652\u0643\u064e \u062c\u064e\u0644\u0651\u064e \u0648\u064e\u062c\u0652\u0647\u064f\u0643\u064e \u0644\u064e\u0627 \u0623\u064f\u062d\u0652\u0635\u0650\u064a\u0652 \u062b\u064e\u0646\u064e\u0627\u0621\u064b \u0639\u064e\u0644\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0643\u064e \u0623\u064e\u0646\u0652\u062a\u064e \u0643\u064e\u0645\u064e\u0627 \u0623\u064e\u062b\u0652\u0646\u064e\u064a\u0652\u062a\u064e \u0639\u064e\u0644\u0670\u0649 \u0646\u064e\u0641\u0652\u0633\u0650\u0643\u064e<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>O Allah, I seek refuge in Your forgiveness from Your punishment, and I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your displeasure, and I seek refuge in You (in Your mercy) from You (from Your punishment). You are exalted. I am unable to praise You as You ought to be praised. You are as You have praised Yourself.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) says, \u201cThe following morning, when I mentioned this dua to Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) (which I heard him recite the previous night), he said to me, \u2018O Aaishah! I see that you learnt this dua?\u2019 I said to him, \u2018Yes, I have learnt it (from you when you recited it last night).\u2019 Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cContinue to remember it and teach it to others, as Jibreel (\u2018alaihis salaam) had taught these words to me and instructed me to repeat them in sajdah.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<em>(Shu\u2019abul Imaan #3556)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>An Interesting Incident that Transpired on Laylatul Baraa\u2019ah<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) reports:<\/p>\n<p>Once, when it was my turn for Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) to spend the night with me, Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) returned from the musjid after the Esha salaah. He took off his shawl, removed his sandals, and placed them at his foot side, after which he lay down next to me on the bed.<\/p>\n<p>Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) only lay down for a short while, until he felt that I was asleep. He then took his shawl silently,\u00a0wore his sandals silently, opened the door (silently), exited the house (silently), and then locked the door silently.<\/p>\n<p>At that time, a strong feeling of possessiveness overcame me. I thought that perhaps he is going to spend the night with one of his other wives.<\/p>\n<p>I immediately woke up from the bed, wore my cloak and scarf and other outer garments, and then I left the home in order to follow him. I walked behind him (without letting him know that I was following him) until he came to Baqee\u2019\u00a0(the graveyard of Madinah Munawwarah). On coming to Baqee\u2019, he stood there for a long time, raising his hands in dua.<\/p>\n<p>Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) mentions, \u201cWhen I found Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) standing in Baqee, making dua for the forgiveness of the believing men and women and the martyrs, I thought to myself, \u2018May my father and mother be sacrificed for you,\u00a0O Messenger of Allah Ta\u2018ala! You are engaged in fulfilling the command of Allah Ta\u2018ala, while I am entertaining these wrong worldly thoughts of you (going to another wife)!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After completing the dua, Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) then turned around (to leave the graveyard and return home). (When I realized this,) I also turned around (to quickly leave for home).<\/p>\n<p>Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) spotted Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) and knew that she had come out following him. Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) says:<\/p>\n<p>So he then began to walk faster, and I also walked faster. He then began to run, and I also ran. He then ran even faster, and I ran faster. I reached home before him, and just as I lay down on the bed, he entered the home. Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) asked me, \u201cWhat is the matter, O Aaishah? Has something happened? Why are you breathing so heavily?\u201d I replied, \u201cNo, nothing has happened!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) responded, \u201cEither you will tell me, or else the One who is the Knower of the hidden things, the Being who is All-Aware (Allah Ta\u2018ala), will definitely inform me.\u201d I replied, \u201cO Rasul of Allah! May my father and mother be sacrificed for you!\u201d and then I informed him of what had transpired.<\/p>\n<p>Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said to me, \u201cSo you were the person that I had seen moving ahead of me?\u201d I replied, \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) said to Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam), \u201cI thought that you were going to spend the night with one of your other wives (that is why I followed you).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) then said to her, \u201cDo you think and fear that Allah Ta\u2018ala and His Rasul (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) will oppress you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In one narration, Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said to her, \u201cWhat happened to you, O Aaishah? Were you overcome by possessiveness?\u201d Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) replied, \u201cWhy should a wife like me not feel possessive over a husband like yourself?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) then said to her, \u201cDid your Shaitaan come to you (and instil this suspicion in your heart)?\u201d Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) asked, \u201cO Rasul of Allah! Do I have a Shaitaan with me?\u201d Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cYes.\u201d Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) then asked, \u201cDoes every person have a Shaitaan with him?\u201d Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cYes (i.e. Allah Ta\u2018ala has kept with each person an angel to motivate him towards good, and a Shaitaan to tempt him towards evil).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) says:<\/p>\n<p>Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) then gently hit my chest with his hand (in order to remove the evil effects of Shaitaan\u2019s whisper from my heart).<\/p>\n<p>Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) then explained to Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) the reason for him leaving the home at that time. He said,\u00a0\u201cJibreel came to me at the time you saw (me leaving the home). He called me in a secret manner. So I responded to his call in the same way. He (Jibreel\u00a0[\u2018alaihis\u00a0salaam]) did not want to enter the room while you were present as you had removed your outer clothing. I thought that you had fallen off to sleep, and I disliked waking you up (that is why I did everything silently). Jibreel said to me, \u2018Your Lord commands you to go to the inmates of Baqee\u2019 and make dua for their forgiveness.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other narrations, is reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) mentioned, \u201cJibreel (\u2018alaihis salaam) came to me and said, \u2018Tonight is the 15<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0night of Sha\u2019baan. During this night, Allah Ta\u2018ala frees many servants from the fire of Jahannum \u2013 equal to the number of the strands of hair on the goats and sheep of the Banu Kalb tribe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>(Saheeh Muslim #974, #2815, Shu\u2019abul Imaan #3556, Sunan Ibnu Maajah #1389)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Eight Classes of People Deprived of Forgiveness and Mercy on Laylatul Baraa\u2019ah<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite Laylatul Baraa\u2019ah being a night of abundant forgiveness, there are certain classes of people who are deprived of forgiveness on this auspicious occasion due to them engaging in major sins. Below are the 8 classes of people who are not granted forgiveness on this night:<\/p>\n<p>(1) the mushrik (the person who commits acts of shirk)<\/p>\n<p>(2) the person who harbours ill-feelings in his heart for others<\/p>\n<p>(3) the person (male) who wears his garments (pants or kurta, etc.) below his ankles<\/p>\n<p>(4) the person who is addicted to wine (or any other types of intoxicants e.g. drugs)<\/p>\n<p>(5) the person who disobeys his parents<\/p>\n<p>(6) the person who severs family ties<\/p>\n<p>(7) the person who commits zina<\/p>\n<p>(8) the person who commits murder.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Sunan Ibnu Maajah #1390, Musnad Ahmed #6642, Shu\u2019abul Imaan #3548,\u00a03555,\u00a03556, Da\u2019awaat Kabeer lil-Bayhaqi 2\/147)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fasting On the 15<sup>th<\/sup> of Sha\u2019baan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was the mubaarak habit of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) to fast throughout the month of Sha\u2019baan.\u00a0 Similarly,\u00a0it was the habit of Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) to fast on the thirteenth, fourteenth and 15<sup>th<\/sup> of every month.<\/p>\n<p>In view of these Ahaadith, we understand that Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) was fasting on the 15<sup>th<\/sup> day of Sha\u2019baan.<\/p>\n<p>Hence, since this day (the 15<sup>th<\/sup>) coincides with the fast of Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam), our Ulama are of the opinion that fasting on this day alone will also be permissible (though it is better for one to fast on the thirteenth, fourteenth and 15<sup>th<\/sup>).<\/p>\n<p>As far as the Hadith that commands fasting on the 15<sup>th<\/sup> day of Sha\u2019baan is concerned, though it is regarded as very weak according to the Muhadditheen, practicing upon it will be permissible since it comes within the purview of the other authentic Ahaadith which explain that Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) fasted throughout the month of Sha\u2019baan.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, it is authentically reported in the Hadith that when Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) was asked the reason for him fasting during the month of Sha\u2019baan, he said, \u201cIn this month of Sha\u2019baan, the book of deeds of a person (in which the entire year\u2019s actions are recorded) is raised to Allah Ta\u2018ala, and I desire that my deeds also be raised in the condition that I am fasting.\u201d <em>(Sunan Nasaai #3357, Targheeb #1537)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>From this Hadith, we understand that Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) was fasting on the 15<sup>th<\/sup> of Sha\u2019baan since the 15<sup>th<\/sup> night is the occasion when the actions are raised to Allah Ta\u2018ala as is understood from other Ahaadith.<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, we understand that there is no harm in one fasting on the 15<sup>th<\/sup> of Sha\u2019baan as it is among the days in which Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) fasted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Currently, we are in the auspicious month of Sha\u2019baan and just a few days away from the mubaarak month of Ramadhaan.
