Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cThe first person to enter Jannah, from my ummah, will be Abu Bakr.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite all these virtues, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) used to say, \u201cI wish I was a tree that would be cut and done away with&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At times, he would say, \u201cI wish I was a blade of grass, whose life ended with the grazing of some animal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At other times, he would mention, \u201cI wish I was a strand of hair on the body of a mu\u2019min&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) went to a garden where he saw a bird. He sighed deeply and said, \u201cO bird! How lucky you are! You eat, you drink and fly under the shade of the trees, and you will face no reckoning on the Day of Qiyaamah! If only Abu Bakr was just like you!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hazrat Rabi\u2019ah Aslami (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) narrates:<\/p>\n<p>Once, I had some argument with Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) during which he uttered a word that I did not like. He realized it immediately and said to me, \u201cBrother, please say that word back to me in retaliation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I refused to do so, at which Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) said, \u201cEither say that word back to me, or else I will go to Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) and mention the matter to him.\u201d However, I still refused to utter that word, after which he got up and left me.<\/p>\n<p>A few people of the Banu Aslam clan then came and remarked, \u201cHow strange! The person who has erred mentions that he will go and complain about it to Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam)!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cDo you know who this person is? He is Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu)! If he is displeased, then the beloved of Allah Ta\u2018ala \u2013 Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) \u2013 will be displeased, and if Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) is displeased, then Allah Ta\u2018ala will be displeased, and in that case, what doubt is there that Rabi\u2019ah will be in ruin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thereafter, I went to Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) and narrated the whole story to him. He said, \u201cYou were quite right in refusing to utter that word to Abu Bakr, but you could have said this much in reply, \u2018O Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu)! May Allah Ta\u2018ala forgive you!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Look at the fear of Allah Ta\u2018ala in Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu)! He is so anxious to clear his accounts in this world that as soon as he has uttered a slightly unpleasant word to a person, he immediately regrets it and becomes greatly concerned and worried about it, to the extent that he requests him to say that word back to him in retaliation.
