The hour (of judgement) has drawn close and the moon has split asunder (Surah Qamar v. 1)<\/em><\/p>\n

On one occasion, approximately five years before the hijrah to Madinah Munawwarah, the disbelievers of Makkah approached Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam). Among them were Waleed bin Mugheerah, Abu Jahal, \u2018Aas bin Waa\u2019il, \u2018Aas bin Hishaam, Aswad bin \u2018Abd-e-Yaghooth, Aswad bin Muttalib, Zam\u2018ah bin Aswad, Nadhr bin Haarith and others.<\/p>\n

They said to Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam), \u201cIf you are the true Nabi of Allah, then show us a special sign that will prove your prophethood.\u201d According to one narration, they demanded that Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) split the moon into two parts.<\/p>\n

It was night and the fourteenth moon was shining in the sky. Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said to them, \u201cVery well, if I display this miracle before you, will you all embrace Islam?\u201d They replied, \u201cYes, we will bring imaan.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) then made du\u2018aa to Allah Ta\u2018ala and thereafter gestured towards the moon with his blessed finger. The moment he pointed towards the moon, it split into two parts; one part towards Mt. Abu Qubais and the other part towards Mt. Qayqa\u2018aan.<\/p>\n

For some time, people continued to stare in amazement at the split moon. Such was their amazement that they wiped their eyes with the clothing, and whenever they looked back at the moon, they clearly saw that it was in two separate parts. Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) continued urging them saying, \u201cO people! Bear witness! O people! Bear witness!\u201d The moon remained split for a duration equal to the time between \u2018asr and maghrib. Thereafter, it returned to its original condition.<\/p>\n

The disbelievers of Makkah exclaimed, \u201cO Muhammed (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam)! You have cast a spell of magic over us!\u201d They then said to one another, \u201cWait for some travellers coming into Makkah from other areas, and ask them whether they saw the moon split, because it is not possible for Muhammed (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) to cast his spell over everybody. If the travellers also testify that they saw the moon split, then you may consider Muhammed (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) to be genuine, and if they say that they have not witnessed anything of this nature, then you should understand that he has cast a spell over you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, when they enquired from different travellers, then travellers from every direction testified that they had witnessed the moon splitting into two parts. However, despite these testimonies of the travellers, these obstinate and stubborn disbelievers refused to bring imaan saying, \u201cThis is enduring sorcery\u201d In other words, the effect of it will soon fade.<\/p>\n

Upon this, the following verses were revealed:<\/p>\n

The hour (of judgement) has drawn close and the moon has split asunder, and if they (the disbelievers of Makkah) witness any sign, they turn away and say, \u201cEnduring sorcery.\u201d (Surah Qamar v. 1-2)<\/em><\/p>\n
