Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) reports that on one occasion, a mukaatab slave (a slave who enters into a contract with his master that upon paying a certain amount, he will receive his freedom) came to him (seeking assistance). He addressed Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) and said, \u201cI am unable to pay the amount for my freedom, so (if you are able to assist me then) assist me.\u201d (At that time, perhaps Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) did not possess any wealth. Therefore, he did not offer him any financial assistance.)<\/em><\/p>\n

Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) responded saying, \u201cShall I not teach you some words (of dua) which Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) had taught me? These words are such that even if you have so many debts which equal Mount Seer (the name of a certain mountain), Allah Ta\u2018ala will settle all your debts for you?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) then taught him the following dua:<\/em><\/p>\n

O Allah, the Reliever of sorrow, the Remover of grief, the One who answers the call of those who are in distress, the Most merciful in the heavens and the earth and the Most gracious in both (the heavens and the earth). Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) reports that on one occasion Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) came to her and asked, \u201cDid you hear the dua that Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) had taught me?\u201d When she asked regarding the dua, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) replied, \u201c(Rasulullah [sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam] taught me the very same dua which) Hazrat Isa (\u2018alaihis salaam) would teach to his companions and would say to them, \u2018If anyone of you has a mountain of gold in debt, and he makes this dua to Allah Ta\u2018ala to settle his debts, Allah Ta\u2018ala will definitely settle his debts for him.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) said, \u201cI had owed someone money and (after paying him a portion), I still had a portion of the debt remaining upon me which I needed to settle. I disliked being in debt and thus began making dua to Allah Ta\u2018ala to settle my debt for me. I recited this dua and begged Allah Ta\u2018ala. Allah Ta\u2018ala blessed me with wealth through which Allah Ta\u2018ala settled the debt for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) said, \u201cI also had a debt of one dinaar and three dirhams which I owed to Hazrat Asmaa bint Umays (radhiyallahu \u2018anha). Thus, whenever she would enter my home to visit me, I would feel shy to look at her on her face as I did not possess any wealth to pay off her debt. I then began making this very same dua to Allah Ta\u2018ala to settle my debt, and it was not long thereafter that Allah Ta\u2018ala blessed me with abundant wealth and sustenance \u2013 which was not sadaqah that was given to me \u2013 nor was it inheritance which I inherited. Thus, Allah Ta\u2018ala settled my debts on my behalf (with this wealth), and after settling the debt I still possessed much wealth which I then distributed among my family generously, and I gave my niece (the daughter of my brother Abdur Rahmaan) three ooqiyah silver (i.e. 120 dirhams) as jewellery, and after all this, I still had a substantial amount remaining for myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

O Allah, the Lord of the Kingdom, You grant kingdom to whomsoever You wish, and You take away kingdom from whomsoever You wish; and You bestow hono<\/em>u<\/em>r to whomsoever You wish and You bring disgrace upon whomsoever You wish. In Your hand lies all good. Surely You are powerful over everything. O the Most merciful in the earth and the heavens, You grant both of them (the blessings of the earth and the heavens) to whomsoever You wish, and You withhold both of them (the blessings of the earth and the heavens) from whomsoever You wish. Shower such (great) mercy upon me through which You will make me independent of the mercy of everyone else besides You.<\/em><\/p>\n

Hazrat Anas (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said to Hazrat Mu\u2019aaz (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu), \u201cO Muaaz! Should I not teach you such a dua that <\/em>if you have debts equal to Mount Uhud, and you make this dua to Allah Ta\u2018ala (to settle your debts), Allah Ta\u2018ala will definitely settle all your debts for you? O Allah, I seek Your protection from mental stress and worry (in regard to future events) and grief (in regard to past events); and I seek Your protection from inability and laziness (in carrying out good deeds and enduring at the time of trials and tribulations); and I seek Your protection from cowardice (i.e. fearing the enemy and turning away from the battlefield, or not being able to fulfil the command of Allah Ta\u2019ala in enjoining good and forbidding evil, or not having the heart to accept the decree of Allah Ta\u2019ala in one\u2019s sustenance and other affairs) and miserliness (i.e. in fulfilling the rights of Allah Ta\u2019ala in one\u2019s wealth e.g. zakaat and not fulfilling the rights of the creation); and I seek Your protection from overwhelming debts and from the oppression of people.<\/em><\/p>\n

Hazrat Abu Sa\u2019eed Khudri (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) reports that on one occasion Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) entered the musjid, and he found an Ansaari Sahaabi named Hazrat Abu Umaamah (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) present. Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cO Abu Umaamah, what is the reason that I see you seated here in the musjid, whereas it is not the time of salaah?\u201d Hazrat Abu Umaamah (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) replied, \u201cO Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam), I am overwhelmed with grief and debts.\u201d Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) replied, \u201cShould I not teach you such a dua, through which Allah Ta\u2019ala will remove your grief and will settle your debts?\u201d Hazrat Abu Umaamah (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) replied, \u201cCertainly do teach me, O Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam)!\u201d Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) replied, \u201cRecite the following dua in the morning and evening:<\/em><\/p>\n
