When Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) proposed for Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha), then he did so via his daughter, Hazrat \u2018Aa\u2019ishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha). Likewise, when Hazrat \u2018Umar (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) proposed for Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha), he sent the proposal via his daughter, Hazrat Hafsah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha).<\/p>\n

As for Hazrat \u2018Ali (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu), then when he intended to propose for Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha), he did not have a close female relative living in the home of Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) via whom he could send his proposal. Hence, he personally came to Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) to propose for Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On coming to Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam), Hazrat \u2018Ali (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) was overcome by respect for Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) and felt shy to mention the proposal. Hazrat \u2018Ali (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) mentions, \u201cWhen I sat before Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam), I fell silent. By Allah, I was unable to speak.\u201d<\/p>\n

Noticing his silence, Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) asked him, \u201cWhat has brought you here? Do you need something?\u201d However, Hazrat \u2018Ali (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) still remained silent. Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) then said, \u201cPerhaps you have come to propose for Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha)?\u201d Hazrat \u2018Ali (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) replied in the affirmative.<\/p>\n

Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) then asked him, \u201cDo you have anything to give her as mahr?\u201d Hazrat \u2018Ali (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) replied, \u201cBy Allah! I do not possess any wealth, O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam)!\u201d Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) then asked, \u201cWhere is the armor which you acquired (from your share of the booty of Badr)?\u201d Hazrat \u2018Ali (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) replied, \u201cI have the armor with me.\u201d Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) instructed, \u201cThen give it to her as mahr.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to another narration, Hazrat \u2018Ali (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) had responded, \u201cI do not have anything besides my horse and my armor.\u201d Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) replied, \u201cAs for your horse, then you will need it. As for your armor, then sell it for the mahr.\u201d<\/p>\n

Accordingly, Hazrat \u2018Ali (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) sold the armor to Hazrat \u2018Uthmaan (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) for four hundred and eighty dirhams. Immediately upon purchasing the armor, Hazrat \u2018Uthmaan (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) gave it back to Hazrat \u2018Ali (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) as a gift. Hence, on returning to Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam), Hazrat \u2018Ali (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) brought both the money and the armor with him.<\/p>\n

When Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) learnt of the generosity and kindness which Hazrat \u2018Uthmaan (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) had shown to Hazrat \u2018Ali (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu), Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) made special du\u2018aa for him.<\/p>\n
