1. When making wudhu, face the qiblah and sit on a raised place (e.g. a chair) so that the used water does not splash on oneself. The place where one makes wudhu should be a clean place.[1]<\/sup><\/p>\n

Sayyiduna Abd Khair (rahimahullah) reports that\u00a0a chair\u00a0was brought to\u00a0Sayyiduna Ali (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu). He then sat on the chair (in order to demonstrate the wudhu of Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam)). Thereafter, he requested that a utensil of water be brought. He then commenced by pouring water on his hands thrice (i.e. he washed his hands thrice till the wrists).<\/em><\/p>\n

2. Make the intention for wudhu at the beginning of the wudhu. Similarly, make the intention of wudhu when commencing the faraaidh of wudhu i.e. washing the face. If you did not have the intention of wudhu at the time of washing the face, but only made the intention of wudhu later on, then you will have to repeat the washing of the face and the limbs that follow.[2]<\/sup><\/p>\n

3. Recite the masnoon dua before commencing the wudhu:[3]<\/sup><\/p>\n

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) reports that Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cO Abu Hurairah! When you perform wudhu, then (first) recite the dua \u00a0<\/em>\u0628\u0650\u0633\u0652\u0645\u0650 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0651\u0670\u0647\u0650 \u0648\u064e\u0627\u0644\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0645\u0652\u062f\u064f \u0644\u0650\u0644\u0651\u0670\u0647<\/span>. Through reciting this dua, the malaa\u2019ikah (angels) which protect you (are commanded to) continuously record good deeds for you until you break that wudhu.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

4. Wash both the hands up to the wrists thrice.[5]<\/sup><\/p>\n

Sayyiduna Humraan (rahimahullah), the freed slave of Sayyiduna Uthmaan (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu), reports that Sayyiduna Uthmaan (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) requested that water be brought (to demonstrate to the people how to perform wudhu). He then commenced the wudhu by washing his hands (till the wrists) thrice. (In this narration, which appears in Saheeh Bukhaari, Sayyiduna Uthmaan (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) said, \u201cI had seen Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) perform wudhu in this manner.\u201d)<\/em><\/p>\n

5. Cleanse the mouth (i.e. the tongue, teeth and palate) with a miswaak. When using the miswaak, brush the teeth in a horizontal manner and the tongue in a vertical manner. In the absence of a miswaak, one should use something that is coarse and will serve the purpose of cleansing the mouth e.g. a toothbrush. Using one\u2019s finger will not suffice for the sunnah of miswaak.[7]<\/sup><\/p>\n

Note<\/strong>: It is makrooh for one who is fasting to use the miswaak after zawaal. However, it is permissible and is not makrooh for the fasting person to use the miswaak before zawaal.<\/p>\n

Sayyidatuna Aaishah (radhiyallahu \u2018anha) reports that Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cThe salaah performed after cleansing the mouth with the miswaak is seventy times superior and more rewarding than the salaah performed without using the miswaak.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
