Prescribed Surahs for Various Times and Occasions<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are certain surahs which have been prescribed to be recited at specific times during the night and day or during certain days of the week. It is mustahab for one to recite these surahs at their prescribed times.<\/p>\n

1. Recite Surah Kaafiroon before sleeping.<\/p>\n

Hazrat Jabalah bin Haarithah (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cWhen you retire to bed, then recite Surah Kaafiroon till the end of the surah, for certainly reciting this surah is a means of being saved from shirk.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

2. Recite the three Quls (i.e. Surah Ikhlaas, Surah Falaq and Surah Naas) thrice every morning and evening.<\/p>\n

Hazrat Abdullah bin Khubaib (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) reports: On one occasion, during a dark, rainy night, we set out in search of Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) so that he may lead us in salaah. I then met Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) and he told me, \u201cRecite.\u201d But (not knowing what to recite,) I did not recite anything. He told me for the second time, \u201cRecite.\u201d But (not knowing what to recite,) I did not recite anything. He told me for the third time, \u201cRecite.\u201d I then asked, \u201cWhat should I recite, O Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam)?\u201d Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) replied, \u201cRecite Surah Ikhlaas and Mu\u2019awwazatain (i.e. Surah Falaq and Surah Naas) in the morning and evening thrice, it will suffice you as a protection from all harm.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

3. Recite Surah Waaqi\u2019ah at night.<\/p>\n

Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas\u2019ood (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said, \u201cThe one who recites Surah Waaqi\u2019ah every night, poverty will never afflict him.\u201d Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas\u2019ood (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) further says, \u201cI have instructed my daughters to recite this surah every night.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

On the occasion when Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas\u2019ood (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu)<\/em> lay on his deathbed and was approaching his final moments, Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu)<\/em>, who was the Khalifah at the time, came to visit him. During the visit, Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu)<\/em> asked him, \u201cShould I not instruct for you to be given an allowance?\u201d Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas\u2019ood (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu)<\/em> replied, \u201cI have no need for it.\u201d Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) <\/em>responded, \u201cThe allowance will be for your daughters (after your demise).\u201d To this, Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas\u2019ood (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu)<\/em> answered, \u201cDo you fear that my daughters will fall into poverty? (You should not have this fear as) I have instructed my daughters to recite Surah Waaqi\u2019ah every night. Indeed I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam)<\/em> mention, \u2018The person who recites Surah Waaqi\u2019ah every night, poverty will never afflict him.\u2019\u201d[4]<\/sup><\/p>\n

4. Recite Surah Yaaseen every morning and evening.<\/p>\n

Hazrat Ibnu Abbaas (radhiyallahu \u2018anhuma) reports, \u201cWhoever recites Surah Yaaseen in the morning, his work for that entire day will be made easy, and whoever recites it at the end of the day, his work till the next morning will be made easy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Hazrat Jundub (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said: \u201cWhoever recites Surah Yaaseen at night with the intention of seeking the pleasure of Allah Ta\u2018ala, his (minor) sins will be forgiven.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0(In the narration of Shu\u2019abul Imaan, it is mentioned that whoever recites Surah Yaaseen, his minor sins will be forgiven. This Hadith does not specify reciting it at night. Hence, the virtue of one\u2019s sins being forgiven through its recitation will be acquired by reciting it at any time of the night or day.)<\/em>[6]<\/sup><\/p>\n

5. Recite Surah Mulk before retiring to bed.<\/p>\n

It is reported that Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas\u2019ood (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) said, \u201cWhoever recites Surah Mulk every night, then by virtue of this surah, Allah Ta\u2018ala will protect him from the punishment of the grave. During the time of Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam), we (the Sahaabah radhiyallahu \u2018anhum) would call this surah by the name \u2018Al Maani\u2019ah (the one that protects a person from the punishment of the grave)\u2019. It is such a surah that the one who recites it every night has certainly achieved a lot and has done good.<\/em>\u201d<\/sup><\/p>\n

Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) said regarding Surah Mulk, \u201cI certainly wish that it (Surah Mulk) be in the heart of every individual of my Ummah.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) mentioned, \u201cIndeed there is a great surah of the Quraan Majeed which consists of thirty verses. It will intercede for a person (who recites it punctually) until he gains forgiveness. This surah is Surah Tabaarak.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

6. Recite Surah Sajdah before retiring to bed.<\/p>\n

Hazrat Jaabir (radhiyallahu \u2018anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu \u2018alaihi wasallam) would not sleep until he recited Surah Sajdah and Surah Mulk.<\/em><\/p>\n

Hazrat Khaalid bin Ma\u2019daan (rahimahullah), a Taabi\u2018ee, mentioned the following: \u201cIndeed Surah Sajdah will dispute, in the grave, in defence of the one who would recite it. It will say, \u2018O Allah! If am from Your kitaab then accept my intercession for him, and if I am not from Your kitaab then erase me from it!\u2019 The surah will assume the form of a bird and will spread its wings over him (to protect him). It will intercede on his behalf and protect him from the punishment of the grave, and Surah Mulk also shares the same virtue.\u201d It is reported that on account of this invaluable virtue, Khaalid bin Ma\u2019daan (rahimahullah) would ensure that he would not go to sleep until he had recited Surah Sajdah and Surah Mulk.<\/em><\/p>\n
