Is Allah Ta’ala not sufficient for His servants? And they frighten you with gods besides Him. And the one who Allah Ta’ala leaves to go astray, then none can guide, and the one who Allah Ta’ala guides, none can lead astray. Is not Allah Ta’ala exalted in power and mighty in retribution?

When Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) would condemn idolatry and their idols, the kuffaar would stand up in support of their idols saying you must be afraid (be warned) of some calamity that will befall you from the side of our idols. So Allah Ta’ala revealed the verse:

Is Allah Ta’ala not sufficient for His servant?

Though this verse was revealed on that particular situation, but its application is general. In our day to day lives people speak like this. Sometimes these types of warnings come from the side of the family and the wife and the children, the immediate families, the parents or the extended families, that if you don’t comply or if you don’t honour our family rituals and customs then we will break away from you. Or sometimes while socializing with people, they give these types of threats that if you do not carry out an action in this manner or if you do not conduct your business in a certain style, we will break away from you. Sometimes when you interact with people then they want you to do some Deeni practices in a certain way, saying that if you don’t do it then we will break away from you. So in answer to all these types of statements, this one verse is sufficient.

Is Allah Ta’ala not sufficient for His servant?

In this verse, addressing man, Allah Ta’ala says: Is Allah Ta’ala not sufficient for you? When He is the supreme master, the total controller, every atom is in His control, then is He not sufficient? Do not pay attention to these types of empty threats from people that are helpless, full of limitations and are weak?

This one verse is sufficient for all problems. If a person succeeds in just getting this one verse firmly rooted in his heart and mind “Is Allah Ta’ala not sufficient for you?” Then he will be totally unconcerned about the criticism of people. He will not be concerned who is criticizing him, who is condemning him, who is complementing him and who is supporting him. He will be totally unconcerned about this because he realises that we have got just one master, one God, one Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala to please. He will understand that by me doing things to earn His pleasure, He will be on my side. What is the need to worry about what the entire world has to say; or even what our near and dear ones have to say, or what our business partners have to say or what the people that we socialise with have to say. We do not have to be concerned about any single thing. As long as we have got Allah Ta’ala on our side, all these other worries, these concerns, suspicions, superstitions, all will be thrown aside.

And if you were to ask them who is that Being that created the heavens and the earth, surely they will say it is Allah. Say do you see those gods that you invoke and call on besides Allah Ta’ala; if Allah Ta’ala wishes any injury and harm for me then they cannot remove that injury and harm, and if Allah Ta’ala wishes mercy and grace for me, then they cannot hold back that mercy. Say Allah Ta’ala is sufficient for me. Only on Him (Allah Ta’ala) should all those who wish to place their trust and reliance, place their trust and reliance on Him. Say (when the truth has become clear, now it is nothing but obstinacy that keeps you back and your personal pride and arrogance that prevents you from the path,) O my people go on working upon your way and I will also continue to work (upon my way). Soon will you people understand (and see the consequence and the end of your actions) on whom will fall a punishment that will cause disgrace to him and upon whom will an abiding punishment fall.

Those who speak in this manner, within their hearts they know full well that the truth is what Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) is saying. For when you ask them (in seclusion), ‘who has created the heavens and the earth?’ Surely they will say it is Allah Ta’ala. They know the limitations of their false deities, they know their weaknesses. But because of some type of family pressure, or due to social pressure or peer pressure, they get absorbed and sucked into these types of practices (wrong practices); practices that will lead them away from Allah Ta’ala.

Another striking example is, that those gods that you call on besides Allah Ta’ala keep them on one side and then compare them to Allah Ta’ala. If Allah Ta’ala intends any type of harm,or any type of calamity for me or he intends and wishes any type of mercy and grace for me, can they keep that back from Allah Ta'ala? Can they prevent that in any way? So when you know surely that these deities and people cannot keep away and prevent that mercy to come to me or that harm from inflicting me, then if you have understood this, you have seen this with your own eyes, then say Allah Ta’ala is sufficient. There is no need to prolong this discussion any further. Because you see it with your eyes, you understand it, you accept it in principle, then Allah Ta’ala is sufficient. And those who wish to trust, let them place their trust in Allah Ta’ala Alone.

Indeed we have sent down this book to you for mankind in general. (So we have sent this kitaab) with total precision and total truth. (When the truth has become manifest and clear,) then whoever receives guidance, then it is for his own good. If anybody strays away, then it is squarely to his harm. (And O Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam), as much as you would desire their guidance and their coming onto hidayat,) you are not the one who will accomplish any affair.

We are the ones who decide. You are only obligated with the task of carrying out Our command, in the way that We have instructed you, and thereafter blessing people with hidaayat (guidance) is My responsibility. I will guide the one I am pleased with, and I will leave to stray the one that I am displeased with. As though it is a consolement and a word of comfort to Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam).

Surah Zumar, Aayah 29-35 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=5848 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=5848#respond Wed, 25 Dec 2013 05:20:07 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=5848 Transcript of Tafseer by Hazrat Mufti Ebrahim Salejee Saheb

Allah Ta’ala sets forth a parable and a simile of a man who belongs to several partners disputing and quarreling with each other and another man who belongs entirely to a single master. Can both be equal in comparison? All praise be to Allah but most of them do not understand.

A man who belongs entirely to one master knows the purpose and his mind is settled and at ease that he has to just please a single master and he knows the commands of the master. So his mind becomes easy and his mind is not suffering with turmoil and he finds a direction in his path. And the second person who is owned by several disputing, quarreling partners at variance with each other, then when they are at variance with each other then one is commanding him to do a certain work and the other is asking him to do something else and the third is asking him to do something else. Now he is constantly in a state of mental turmoil that he doesn't know who to please. If he pleases one, then the other one is displeased. If he pleases the second, then the first is displeased. So he doesn't know who to please and who to displease. He is constantly suffering from turmoil. His mind is not at ease whatsoever. So this is a comparison between those who worship Allah Ta’ala and those who worship these false deities, that when they are worshipping their false deities, they do not know whether Allah Ta’ala is pleased with them. When they are worshipping Allah Ta’ala, then they are concerned about their deities. So their minds are being tossed from one end to the other.

Similarly, the same parable and example can be applied to a person who is consumed with customs, ways and people. When he has allowed people to give him direction and instruction, so if he is pleasing one, then he is concerned about the other, how will the other person take it. If it is a marriage, if he is pleasing his wife then he is worried about the Shari’ah. If he is worried about the Shari’ah then he is also concerned about his wife. Now who to please and who to displease? How to reconcile? So when you have got so many people, and so many masters to obey and to please, then obviously your mind will be in a constant state of turmoil. Compared to a person who has just submitted himself to Allah Ta’ala and His Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam), his mind is totally at ease. It is just Allah Ta’ala and His Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) that I have to please and I don’t have to be concerned about the rest of the world. No matter what the world may say. So this is a parable that can be applied to all different types of situations.

Indeed you will also die and they will also die, then (at the end) on the day of Qiyaamat will you settle your disputes in the presence of your Rabb.

In the Hadith it is recorded that if any person has anything to settle, any obligations any debts, then let him settle it immediately in this life. Because in the next life there isn't any wealth that is of any avail, nor is there any influence that is of any avail. What counts is your deeds. So if it is that you have anything that is unsettled in this life, then see to it that you have settled it in this very life and don’t postpone it for the hereafter. For there, you will have to pay dearly with your deeds. Hence, on the Day of Qiyaamat when people will appear, then Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) had enquired from the Sahabah-e-Kiraam that who is a bankrupt and insolvent person? The obvious reply the Sahabah-e-Kiraam had given ‘The one that doesn't have any wealth and is covered with debts. That is the person that is counted as a bankrupt person’. He said, “Well, no no, the real bankrupt person is that person who will come with a mountain of deeds. So heavy will his deeds be that they will even suppress the mountains. But then he will appear such that he has oppressed a person, he has been aggressive to the other, he has insulted the third person, he has robbed and cheated someone else and he has been humiliating others; suppressing them, cheating them, humiliating them, robbing them of their rights. So the sins of those who he wronged will be loaded upon him and if they have no sins left, then his good deeds will be transferred to those people who he had wronged. Hence, on that day the concern will be so great that even the son will hope and desire that can I make any claims and desires from my father. The wife will demand the same from her husband that he had been cruel to me on a certain occasion and I need my rights today. So rights will be fulfilled and they will be fulfilled with your deeds.

So when this is the condition,

Then who does greater wrong than the one who utters a lie against Allah Ta’ala or rejects the truth when it comes to him. (Obviously one is at the level of oppression, wrong, cheating and robbing. And then the higher wrong is to utter a lie against Allah Ta’ala, attribute something falsely towards Him or rejects the truth when it comes to him.) Is there not an abode in Jahannum for the unbelievers.

And the one that has brought the truth and the one that confirms it (one is the one that brings the truth i.e. the Nabi and then the one that confirms and supports it i.e. the Sahabah and the believers in general) then these are the righteous ones. For them will be all that they please, all that they desire and they wish for in the presence of their Rabb. Such is the reward of those who do good. The result (of this good) is that Allah Ta’ala will pardon and wipe off even the worst of their deeds, (let alone their minor deeds, he will even wipe out and obliterate the worst of their deeds) and he will reward them for the best of their deeds.

“Then can the one whose heart Allah Ta’ala has opened for the truth of Islam then goes on constantly receiving the light of his Rabb (can he be equal to the one whose heart is closed to the truth). Then woe to the one whose heart is hardened from receiving the remembrance of Allah Ta’ala and engaging in His remembrance. These are the ones that are in a clear and wrong path. Allah sent down the best message in a book, the book in itself is consistent in itself with often repeated verses and the hearts and the skins of those that fear their Rabb fear and tremor with their hair standing up. Thereafter their skins and their hearts soften towards the remembrance of Allah Ta’ala. Such is the guidance of Allah Ta’ala. He guides with it whomsoever He pleases and whomsoever Allah leaves to stray then they can be no one to guide him.

The Sahaba-e-kiraam wanted to know how do you make out that a person’s heart has been opened for receiving the truth of Islam and receiving the noor of Allah Ta’ala (the special light of Allah Ta’ala), what will indicate and what will prove that this person's heart has been opened for the truth of Islam and that the divine light is settling within his heart? So Rasul-e-Paak (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) explained to them that الإنابة إلى دار الخلود والتجافي عن دار الغرور – Inclination and interest in the hereafter (the permanent home) and a disinterest and disinclination towards this life. والتأهب للموت قبل أوانه – Preparation for death before the time of death can actually arrive. So this is indicative of the fact that this person's heart has been opened for the truth of Islam and the special noor of Allah Ta’ala (the divine light) has settled into his heart. And an indication that a person’s heart has been hardened from engaging in the remembrance of Allah Ta’ala and from the noor of Allah Ta’ala settling in his heart is that his heart is hardened as though it is locked up, it is sealed, it cannot receive that divine light.

The best message that Allah Ta’ala has sent down is the message in His book. The message of the book is consistent within itself through the verses that are often repeated.

The Qur’an has been revealed in parts and portions on different occasions at different times yet you will see that all verses are similar and consistent within themselves. One is similar to the other, one is consistent with the other. The message is one and the same though the Qur’an has explained it from different perspectives and different dimensions. And what is the response and what is the reaction of those who really fear their Rabb? Those who really fear their Rabb on impact they are shaken. As a result you will see the impact on their skins-that the first thing to show the impact is the skin in a human being-when you are shocked and when you are terrified, then the first impression and the first impact is on the skin. You can see the skin responding and reacting, that the hair of the skin stands up and it trembles. So this is the first impact when they recite, when they receive and when they listen to the word of Allah Ta’ala. Thereafter this message of Allah Ta’ala penetrates deeply into their hearts. Then at the second level you will find that their skins and their hearts have softened (have complied) to the word of Allah Ta’ala and they engage in the remembrance of Allah Ta’ala. So one is, at the first impact, then there is some form of fear with the hair standing up then when they have settled, you will find that their hearts and their skins have become totally compliant and softened with the remembrance of Allah Ta’ala. They are prepared to take on anything.

Such is the guidance of Allah Ta’ala. And He guides with it whomsoever he pleases. That their hearts and their skins are totally compliant and softened towards the obedience of Allah Ta’ala and His submission. Basically there are two forms of submission: One is the submission to the happenings and systems of Allah Ta’ala governing us and ruling our lives. At times you will find the person is in poverty and the next person or the same person can be in prosperity. Sometimes it’s adversity and sometimes it’s prosperity. Sometimes it’s riches and sometimes it is rags. Sometimes it is honour and sometime you don’t see this honour. But when a person’s heart has been softened and becomes compliant to the will of Allah Ta’ala in all these conditions, he is comfortable, he does not complain about the poverty and he does not become proud, arrogant and haughty in the face of wealth and riches. So in all conditions his heart has softened and he has humbled himself. Everything is acceptable to him. So this is the first type of command, that is the systems that govern us. And then the other command of Allah Ta’ala, that is the commands of Allah Ta’ala that govern Halaal and Haraam (i.e. the do’s and the don'ts) the prohibitions and the permissions that Allah Paak has given us. So in all these conditions, he is totally compliant, he is not objecting to the command of Allah Ta’ala, not verbally and not from within his mind that, why is this like this and why had this happened like this, why is this person taken away and why am I in poverty and why am I not in riches etc. So these types of questions don’t feature in his mind. He takes it as Allah Ta’ala has ordained. And the one who Allah Ta’ala leaves to stray, then he will not find anyone to guide him.

“Can the person wards off the terrible punishment of the Day of Qiyaamah with his face.”

When a person is confronted with problems and he is in some difficulty or danger, then he wards of the difficulty and the problems with his hands and his feet. But on the Day of Qiyaamah his hands and his feet will be binded. He will not be able to ward off that punishment with his hands nor with his feet. So as though he will have to ward it off with his face. His face will be receiving the punishment of Allah Ta’ala directly.

“And it will be said to the sinners then taste of the fruit of your earnings. Those before them as well had rejected the message, then the punishment had come to them from directions which they had least perceived. Then Allah Ta’ala gave them a taste of disgrace in this life and the punishment of the hereafter is far worse. Had they only known. And Allah Ta’ala sets all types of parables through this Qur’an that mankind may receive admonition. It is a Qur’an that has come down in the Arabic language without any crookedness that they may fear Allah Ta’ala and guard themselves against evil.”

Surah Zumar, Aayah 11-21 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=5719 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=5719#respond Sat, 07 Dec 2013 05:07:50 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=5719 Transcript of Tafseer by Hazrat Mufti Ebrahim Salejee Saheb

“Say, I have been commanded to worship Allah Ta’ala with sincere and exclusive devotion.”

The theme of this very Surah is sincerity. The scales and the balances on the Day of Qiyaamah will weigh deeds, it will not count the deeds. Thus, impressing upon us that, build up on the sincerity and the weight will be built accordingly. So Allah Ta’ala repeatedly says this that, with sincere and exclusive devotion, worship Him.

“I have been further commanded that I be first amongst those who submit to Allah Ta’ala in obedience. And say that in the event I disobey my Rabb, I fear the punishment of a mighty day. Say, it is Allah who I worship with all my devotion and sincerity, then worship whatever you please besides Him. Say, the true losers are those who lose their own souls and their own families on the day of Qiyaamah. Behold this is evident loss.”

Those families on to whom they had clung, those for whom they had strived, and worked for their prosperity, then they would lose the very same people on the Day of Qiyaamah. So these are the true losers.

“For them will be layers of fire from above them and layers of fire beneath them. With this does Allah Ta’ala warn His servants ‘O My servants do fear Me!’

“Those who guard themselves against false worship and they turn to Allah Ta’ala (in obedience and repentance) then for them is the good news. Then give the good news to My servants; those who listen to the word of Allah Ta’ala and follow the best. These are the ones who are upon guidance from Allah Ta’ala and they are the ones of intelligence and understanding.”

In this verse Allah Ta’ala commands that ‘give that good news to those servants who listen to the word and follow the best.’

What is meant by ‘following the best?’ Obviously the word أحسن is in the superlative degree. So when we say it’s the best then what is it compared with? When we say that he is the best then what is he being compared against? So there are three different explanations that are given. The one explanation is that the entire Qur’an Shareef is the best in comparison to any other advice and any other admonition, so follow the Qur’an. The second explanation is that in our deeds and our actions there are different levels. The one level is the level of permissibility and the other level is the level of virtue. So don’t just content yourself with the level of permissibility, rather look at the level of virtue. For example, to exact revenge from someone and retaliate is permissible.

To exact revenge of equality is permissible. To retaliate to the extent of the wrong that was done to you is permissible.

But obviously the one that forgives and overlooks, then this is even better and even more rewarding in the sight of Allah Ta’ala. So when a person is confronted with this situation that he can go on the avenue of permissibility and he can go on the avenue of virtue, so he should go on the avenue of virtue.

The third explanation that has been given is that this is with reference to Hazrat Salmaan Faarsi (Radiyallahu Anhu), Abu Zar (Radiyallahu Anhu) and Zaid ibn Amr ibn Nufail (Radiyallahu Anhu) who had also been upon the true religions in the past; Christianity and Judaism were the true religions before Islam. Then when they had seen Islam, they had obviously opted for Islam seeing that Islam is the best, the most complete and the most perfect of all religions. Hence, they listened to the word in the correct manner.

Such people who listen to the word in the correct manner are those who do not just fall onto anything, any statement, any advice, anything given to them or any word passed on to them or any message they have received, they don’t just take it like that on face value. Rather thereafter they think for themselves and they try and understand that which is the best path. Then they follow the best path. They don’t just act on impulse or they don’t just act on their emotions, rather they will see what is the best. They will think for themselves, reason with the ability that Allah Ta’ala has given them, and follow the best path. These are the ones who are upon guidance of Allah Ta’ala. Allah Ta’ala has guided these people and they are the people of understanding and intelligence.

“Is the one against whom the divine decree due, (can he be equal to the one who’s been saved from the punishment, who is upon the path of virtue on account of which he has been delivered from all wrong and all types of torment and punishment, can both of them be equal?) “Can you save the one that is in the fire? But for those people who fear their Rabb (they fear disobeying their Rabb), then for them are mansions built one above the other beneath them will rivers flow. Such is the promise of Allah Ta’ala. And Allah Ta’ala does not fail in His promise.”

“Don’t you see Allah Ta’ala sends down the rain from the heavens then He leads it to the springs through the earth thereafter he brings out crops of different colours. Then you will see them withering away and you will see it yellow and then you see it drying and crumbling away. These are lessons for those imbued with intelligence and understanding.”

So this is the life that we go through. The first and initial stage of life we are very weak and helpless, then we grow to our levels of perfection. We feel that there is nobody that is equal to us. Thereafter man gradually withers away, the greyness comes in, the weakness settles in and thereafter eventually he just crumbles. Like how those plants and those crops, after the beauty and after they had peaked, then they crumble and become totally dry. These are lessons for those imbued with intelligence and understanding.

This is a revelation of a book from Allah the Exalted in might, the One who is full of wisdom. Indeed We have sent down this book to you in truth and total precision, then worship Allah Ta’ala with total devotion. Behold! True devotion belongs to Allah Ta’ala alone and those who worship gods besides Allah Ta’ala (then they say that) We only worship them to bring us closer to Allah Ta’ala. Indeed Allah Ta’ala will decide between them in the matters that they differ presently.  And Allah Ta’ala does not guide those who lie and are ungrateful. Had it been the will of Allah Ta’ala to take a child, He could have taken (a child) from the things that He had created Himself. Glory be to Him! He is Allah the One and the Almighty. He has created the heavens and the earth with total precision. He causes the night to overlap the day and the day to overlap the night and He has subjected the sun and the moon (to your service). Each one flows (on its own course) for a period that (Allah Ta’ala) has appointed. Behold, He is Allah the One who is Exalted in might and the One who is forgiving all the time. He created you from a single soul then from this soul He has created its partner and sent down for you eight species of domestic animals. He creates you in the wombs of your mothers in stages one after the other in three layers of darkness. Such is Allah! Your Rabb. To Him belongs all the kingdom. There is none worthy of worship but He. Then how are you people being turned away from the truth?

n this ruku, these words are being repeated all the time. Then worship Allah Ta’ala with sincere and true devotion. With true devotion comes the perfection of Imaan. So the one whose Imaan is perfect, then his sincerity and his devotion will also be perfect. And in proportion to the weakness of his faith, then his sincerity will also be affected. And what is the very essence of Imaan? The very essence of Imaan is to have the conviction that Allah Ta’ala is in supreme control of every good and every harm. It is absolutely in His control. Nothing is out of His control and reach. So When everything is in His control, any good and any harm that we can think of and that we see and that we know of, everything is in His control, then the sensible thing is to hope in Him alone and to fear Him alone.

This is the very essence of Imaan, that we hope and fear Allah Ta’ala alone and we don’t have expectations with people, nor do we have any fears about people that, if they stop a certain work, then it won’t happen, and if they permit it, then it will happen. Thus, for as long as one is in this type of a rut, and this type of a state of mind, then he will be agonising himself, he will be causing grief to himself, he will be causing pain to himself. Furthermore, that is an indication that his Imaan is not right. His Imaan is deficient; there is a weakness in his Imaan, for he considers things to happen through people. So as long as he feels that Allah Ta’ala has the supreme control, He will make things happen, then his expectations will be in Allah Ta’ala. He will thereby bring happiness within himself and he will expel all type of misery, agony and grief from his heart.  So this is the very gist of Imaan; that you hope in Allah Ta’ala alone, you fear Allah Ta'ala alone and you expect from Allah Ta’ala alone. For this to be achieved, you should worship Allah Ta’ala alone with sincere devotion. When He is in total control and when everything is in His power then we need to ensure that we offer our devotion sincerely to Him.

And then Allah Ta’ala goes on to say,

If you disbelieve, then Allah Ta’ala doesn't need you. (But by the same token), Allah Ta’ala is not pleased with ingratitude from His servants. And if you are grateful, then Allah Ta’ala is pleased with you. And (remember on the day of Qiyaamat), no bearer of burdens will bear the load of the other.

Each person is responsible for his own burden, for his own baggage. Each person is responsible, so you ensure that your baggage is right, that you don’t have anything that is going to amount to a crime in the court of Allah Ta’ala.

Then at the end, your return is to your Rabb (Allah Ta’ala) and He will tell you the truth of all that you have done. Indeed, Allah Ta’ala is the Knower of the secrets of the heart.

But mankind is forgetful and his worship to Allah Ta’ala is a worship of convenience.

When any harm touches man, then he turns to Allah Ta’ala crying for assistance and help. But the moment Allah Ta’ala bestows a favour to him, then he forgets all the favours for which he used to be calling (all the types of worship that he used to offer to Allah Ta’ala, he forgets everything, the sacrifices, the promises, the devotion, the sincerity that he had, all of it is totally forgotten) and further taking partners to Allah Ta’ala that they may mislead from the path of Allah Ta’ala. (Allah Ta’ala says): Say (to them): Then enjoy your disbelief for a short while. Indeed you are from the dwellers of jahannum. Then (who is better), one who devotes himself during the night and day (in the hours of the night and in the hours of the day he is devoting himself) in prostration and standing before Him concerned about the hereafter and hoping in the mercy of his Lord.  Say those who know and those who do not know, can they both be alike? It is only the people of understanding that take heed.

So one is the person that stands up in obedience to Allah Ta’ala during the hours of the night in prostration and standing before him, fearing the hereafter and expecting and longing for the mercy of Allah Ta’ala, his Rabb. So who is better? Is this person or the one that is totally forgetful of standing before Allah Ta’ala, and he is heedless of having to stand before Allah Ta’ala for the reckoning. So whose plight is better?
