"When a lump of dung indicates that a camel had passed by and footsteps indicate that a person had passed by, then how could a sky filled with constellations and an earth crossed with paths not indicate the existence of the Creator who is most-gracious and all-aware?"

Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) and the Three Questions of the Roman Emperor https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=8311 Sat, 26 Dec 2015 04:38:51 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=8311 three questionsThe Emperor of the Romans once sent a large amount of wealth to the Khalifah of the Muslims. Before dispatching his representative with the wealth, the Emperor commanded him to pose three questions to the ‘Ulamaa’ of the Muslims. The Roman representative, as instructed, posed the three questions to the ‘Ulamaa’ but they were unable to give him satisfactory answers. Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) was, at that time, still a young boy and he happened to be present with his father. When he saw that the ‘Ulamaa’ were unable to adequately answer the three questions, he approached the Khalifah and asked him for permission to respond to the challenge of the Romans. The Khalifah granted him permission and he turned to the Roman representative who was seated at a raised pulpit and asked, “Will you be posing the questions?” When the representative replied in the affirmative, Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) said, “In that case, you should descend to the floor so that I can be seated at the pulpit.” The representative complied and climbed down, allowing the young Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) to ascend.

The Roman representative then put forth his first question, “What was in existence before Allah?” Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) replied by likewise asking a question, “Do you know mathematics?” The representative replied, “Yes.” Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) continued, “What precedes the number ‘one’?” The representative replied, “One is the first number; there is nothing before it.” Imam Abu Hanifah then concluded his answer explaining, “If there is nothing before the figurative number one, how can there be anything before the actual One (Allah Ta‘ala)?”

The representative then posed the second question. He asked, “In which direction is Allah facing?” Once again, Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) answered by posing a question of his own, “When you light a lamp, in which direction does the light shine?” The representative replied, “The light shines equally in all four directions.” Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) explained, “If a light that can be lit and extinguished is not restricted and limited by direction, how can the light of the Creator of the heavens and earth, which is eternal and overpowering, ever be restricted and limited by direction?”

The representative then asked his third and final question, “What is Allah doing?” Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) answered, “He has brought down a disbeliever such as yourself from the pulpit and raised a believer such as myself from the ground.”

Imam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) had correctly and efficiently answered all three questions and the Roman representative admitted defeat and departed.

Incident of Imam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) and an Atheist https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=8281 Sat, 19 Dec 2015 04:05:44 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=8281 mulberry leavesAn atheist once asked Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) to prove the existence of the creator, Allah Ta‘ala. Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) answered, “Look at the leaves of the mulberry tree. The colour, taste, smell, composition and properties of every leaf are the same. Despite being exactly the same, when consumed by the silk worm, silk is produced. When visited by the bee, honey is produced. When consumed by the goat, dung is produced and when consumed by the musk deer, musk is produced. Only the design of a creator who is eternal and all powerful could cause so many diverse things to be produced from one substance. Otherwise, logic would demand that the end product of all be the same as the substance which entered all was the same.”

Imam Maalik (rahimahullah) Proves the Existence of a Creator https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=8260 Sun, 13 Dec 2015 03:59:35 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=8260 A person once came to Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) and asked him to present proof for the existence of a creator. Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) answered, “Look at the face of a person. As small as it may be, every person’s face comprises of eyes, a nose, ears, a tongue, cheeks, gums etc. Despite every face containing the exact same organs, there are no two faces that are exactly the same in appearance and shape. Voices are different, tones are different and limbs are different. This uniqueness with which every person is blessed can only be the result of a Creator’s design.”

On noticing them, Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) decided to engage them in dialogue and so asked them, “If a person had to claim that he saw a ship which had neither a captain nor sailors to steer and navigate it, sailing through the waves of the ocean in a perfectly straight line, loading goods on one shore and offloading them on another shore, all on its own without a person to oversee and control it, what would you say?” The group immediately exclaimed, “Such a phenomenon is so illogical that no intelligent person would accept is as possible!” Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) responded saying, “What has then happened to your intelligence? When you accept that one single ship cannot sail and operate without sailors aboard, then how do you accept that the entire universe can function and operate without Allah to control it?” The entire group was astonished at this line of reasoning and immediately repented and accepted Islam at the hands of Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah).

I said: O Jibreel, where is this beautiful fragrance coming from? He said: This is the fragrance of the hairdresser of the daughter of Fir’awn and her children. I asked: inform me regarding them. Jibr’aeel (Alayhis Salaam) explained: One day, whilst she was combing the hair of Firawn’s daughter, the comb fell from her hand and she said, ‘Bismillah (in the name of Allah Ta’ala).’ The daughter of Firawn asked: ‘By taking the name of the Lord, are you referring to my father?’ She said: ‘No. My Lord and the Lord of your father, Fir’awn, is Allah.’ She said: ‘I will report this to my father.’ She said: ‘You may inform him.’ The daughter informed him and he thus summoned the beautician and said: ‘O So and so, do you have a Lord other than me?’ She said: ‘Yes, my Lord and your Lord is Allaah.’ He ordered that a large pot made of copper be heated up, then he ordered that she and her children be thrown into it. She said: ‘I have a request to make to you.’ He asked: ‘What is your request?’ She said: ‘I would like my bones and my children’s bones to be gathered together in one cloth and buried.’ He said: ‘This will be done for you.’ He ordered that her children be thrown into it in front of her, one by one, until they came to the last one who was an infant boy who was still being breastfed. It was as if she hesitated because of him, but he said: ‘O mother, go ahead, for the punishment of this world is easier to bear than the punishment of the hereafter.’ So she went ahead.” Hadhrat Ibn ‘Abbaas (Radhiyallahu Anhu) said: “Four infants spoke miraculously during their infancy: “Hadhrat Isa ibn Maryam (Alayhis Salaam), the witness of Jurayj, the witness of Yousuf (Alayhis Salaam) and the son of the hairdresser of Firawn’s daughter.” (Musnad Ahmad)

We have never seen you in such a state prior to this.” The Sheikh replied, “The journey (to the Hereafter) is extremely far and I do not have sufficient provisions for the journey. Neither do I have knowledge of the way as I have not traversed it before. I will soon be meeting my Lord and Sustainer, the Master of my soul, who prior to this I have not met. I shall have to see such horrible spectacles as I have never seen before. I shall be laid in the grave under the ground and be there till the day of Qiyaamah, all alone, without any friend or comforter. I shall then be required to appear before Allah Ta’ala  for reckoning and, if I am asked and told, O Habib, present one 'Subhaan-Allah' which you have done solely for Allah Ta’ala untarnished by the evil influence of Shaytaan during the sixty years of life in this world, what answer would I have to present? Someone said to him, “Why do you cry? After death you will meet Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) left this world in the condition that he was pleased with you.” Hadhrat Salmaan (Radhiyallahu Anhu) replied, “I am not weeping for fear of death, nor because I am leaving the world. What makes me cry is that we had taken a covenant with Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), that we would use the things of this world to the extent of a traveller who suffices on the bare minimum to allow him to complete his journey, but I am concerned that I have not been able to fulfil what we have pledged.”

Yet when he passed away, he was found to possess what amounted to just ten Dirhams. Just imagine, this was all he possessed in the world, which he considered to be excessive. He then called for some musk, asked his wife to mix it with water and sprinkle it on his bed and then said, “I am expecting a group of visitors who are neither men nor jinn.” (i.e. a group of angels) (Fazaail Sadaqaat)

The angel told him that he would not be able to bear the sight, but Hadhrat Ibrahim Alaihis salaam said that he would manage to bear it. The angel then asked him to turn around and he did so. After a short while the angel said, ‘Now, look towards me.’ and Hadhrat Ibrahim Alaihis salaam turned around and looked at him. What met his gaze was the most horrible giant-like figure dressed in black, dark-complexioned and long-haired, with each hair standing stiffly on end, giving off a most disgusting smell, with flames of fire leaping up from his mouth and nostrils!

Hadhrat Ibrahim Alaihis salaam could not bear the sight and fell unconscious. After regaining consciousness, Hadhrat Izraeel Alaihis salaam had resumed his normal form. Hadhrat Ibrahim Alaihis salaam then said, “Even if there were no other affliction for the evil and wicked servants, the terrible ordeal of facing Hadhrat Izraeel Alaihis salaam at the time of death in such a horrible form would suffice for their punishment. This is the form in which the Angel of Death appears when he visits the evil and wicked servants. However when he comes to take the souls of the pious and the devout servants of Allah Ta'ala, he appears in the most handsome form.

When Hadhrat Ibrahim Alaihis salaam asked Hadhrat Izraeel Alaihis salaam to appear before him in the form that he adopts while visiting the pious servants, he saw standing before him a handsome young man elegantly dressed, with the fragrance of the most exotic perfumes wafting from his body. Hadhrat Ibrahim Alaihis salaam said, "Even if there were no other joy for the believer besides the enjoyment obtained upon seeing the handsome face of Hadhrat Izraeel Alaihis salaam at the hour of death, this would suffice for all other enjoyments and pleasures." Hadhrat Moulana Saharanpuri Sahib (rahmatullahi alaih) and Salaah with jamaat https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=7658 Sun, 10 May 2015 04:09:59 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=7658 Explaining the importance that Hadhrat Moulana Khaleel Ahmad Saharanpuri rahmatullahi alaih showed to the performance of Salaah with jamaat especially in the Haram Shareef, Mufti Aashiq Ilaahi Meeruti rahmatullahi alaih writes:

“At all times, Salaah with jamaat would be the source of pleasure and joy for Hadhrat Moulana Khaleel Ahmad Sahib rahmatullahi alaih. One can well imagine what would have been the extent of joy when it came to Salaah in the Haram Shareef.

It would be impossible for any one of Hadhrat’s associates to declare that he had witnessed Hadhrat either missing the takbeer-e-ula, the first saff or standing on the right of the imaam. Despite the heat being so intense that by merely placing one’s foot on the ground blisters would begin to appear, yet Hadhrat would hurriedly walk to the Haram Shareef so that he may perform his Salaah in the first saff near the imaam.

I remember very clearly that we once experienced torrential rain after Maghrib Salaah. On seeing the heavy downpour, some of the companions began saying that the concession of:

ألا صلوا في رحالكم (Perform your Salaah at home i.e. due to the severe rain.) could now be practised. However, no sooner did the sound of the azaan fall on Hadhrat’s ears, he turned to me and said: ‘Come, let us go for namaaz.’ Despite my spirits being low at that time, I plucked up the courage to accompany Hadhrat. I took a lantern whilst Hadhrat took a container of water. This confounded me, for Hadhrat had already made wudhu. However, Hadhrat then said: ‘It is possible that our feet will get soiled with mud. Hence, we shall wash our feet at the entrance of the Musjid so as not to soil the Haram Shareef.’

Prior to that, I had not witnessed or seen the state of Makkah with rain and mud. As we stepped on to the road, it seemed as if the ground had caught hold of our feet. With each step, I wished that Hadhrat turns back and practises on the concession. I fully understood that this was unmanageable for Hadhrat, yet he was still walking ahead of me. Each one of us had separate umbrellas whilst I held the lantern in the other hand and Hadhrat had the pitcher of water in his other hand. We walked till the end of the bazaar until we reached the road. We only needed to cross the road to get to the Musjid.

As we got to the road we found that a 25 – 30 feet wide river was flowing very strongly. I became afraid of crossing it and was convinced that Hadhrat will decide to return. Contrary to my expectation, Hadhrat said: ‘Fold the umbrellas and pull up your trousers (to your knees). Take off your shoes, place them under your arms and we shall hold each other’s hands and step into the water. I have heard that these streams carry a lot of stones and there is a fear of falling.’

That wonderful spectacle is still before my eyes; walking barefoot with our trousers folded to our knees, holding each other’s hands like a pair of scissors and with the umbrellas hanging on our arms. Hadhrat then recited: ‘bismillahi majrehaa’ and placed his foot into the fast flowing stream. Since the water was flowing downstream and the path was steep it carried along all sizes of stones and pebbles. They were coming with such force as if one was being struck with bullets. As we walked further, the water reached my knees and I was on the verge of falling. However, Hadhrat held my arms firmly which saved me from falling. With firm reliance on Allah Ta`ala we finally reached Bab-us-Safa. As we got on to the steps Hadhrat rinsed his feet, placed his shoes in the rack and then entered the Musjid reciting the masnoon du`aa.” (Tazkirat-ul- Khaleel, p. 370/371)

Hadhrat Moulana Asadullah Sahib rahmatullahi alaih and takbeer-e-ula https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=7656 Sun, 03 May 2015 04:06:32 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=7656 Musjid NabawiHadhrat Qaari Siddeeq Baandwi rahmatullahi alaih mentioned an incident that had taken place in his days of khidmah of his shaikh Hadhrat Moulana As`adullah Sahib rahmatullahi alaih. He says, “I used to help Hadhrat Naazim Sahib rahmatullahi alaih to make wudhu. Hadhrat was very particular about performing every Salaah with jamaat. Throughout my student days I did not see Hadhrat ever missing out one Salaah with takbeer-e-ula. He always went to the Musjid immediately after the azaan was given. After Maghrib Salaah he would remain standing in Awwaabeen Salaah for long periods. I would sit behind him. Sometimes, he would ask for water to drink in between but would only have one sip. I imagined that he was just checking to see if I was there or not.”

Once, a meeting was held with the shurah members of the Madrasah. Hadhrat rahmatullahi alaih was also a member of the shurah. During the meeting, the azaan was called out and the time for jamaat commenced. Hadhrat could not leave the meeting immediately for some reason. The meeting terminated exactly at the time of the Salaah. Hadhrat’s office was some distance away from the Musjid. Hence, I became very perplexed and did not know what to do. I filled the water jug and waited for Hadhrat. The jamaat had already commenced when I saw Hadhrat walking very fast towards me. Immediately I began pouring water for him to make wudhu. The Salaah was almost over when Hadhrat asked me, ‘Is there any Musjid where we can perform our Salaah with takbeer-e-ula?’ Someone mentioned that perhaps we may get the takbeer-e-ula at a Musjid near the Madrasah. We immediately set off for that Musjid but found that, unfortunately, the Salaah there was completed as well. Hadhrat was extremely grieved. Another person told him that perhaps there was hope of getting the jamaat in another Musjid. We immediately rushed off to that Musjid but unfortunately, here too, the Salaah was over. Hadhrat was even more grieved. Eventually, someone told him that in a certain orchard there is a Musjid where Salaah is performed very late. Very few people gather there for Salaah.

Hadhrat heard this and it was as though a new life had come into him. That orchard was approximately 200 meters away. On that day we witnessed how fast Hadhrat could walk. He walked so swiftly that I had to literally run behind him to keep up. As we approached the orchard, we saw some people standing up. From a distance he indicated to them to wait a while. When Hadhrat reached the Musjid, the people told him that they were waiting for a servant of Allah to arrive and lead the Salaah. Hadhrat performed his Salaah with jamaat, with the takbeer-e-ula and returned to the Madrasah. (Hayaat-e-Siddeeq – English, p. 102)

“Hadhrat Naazim Sahib (Moulana As`adullah) rahmatullahi alaih seldom travelled, fearing he would miss his Salaah with jamaat and his takbeer-e-ula. Once he had to go to Deoband to visit Hadhrat Qaari Muhammad Tayyib Sahib rahmatullahi alaih. Prior to the journey he drew up an itinerary for the journey. He first found out the times for the trains. Those trains wherein there was a possibility of missing out Salaah with jamaat were then avoided. It was his habit to travel only on those trains wherein he would not miss his Salaah with jamaat.

Thus we travelled to Deoband in this manner. After meeting with Hadhrat Qaari Muhammad Tayyib Sahib rahmatullahi alaih we quickly returned. On our return he was also very careful that no Salaah was missed with takbeer-e-ula.” (Hayaat-e-Siddeeq – English, p. 105)

Punctuality on jamaat Salaah was a distinctive feature in all the mureeds of Hadhrat Moulana Gangohi rahmatullahi alaih. My father also placed a lot of emphasis on it according to the teaching of his shaikh. He would not allow his jamaat Salaah to be missed even at the time of heavy rain. When the path to the Musjid would be dark and muddy because of the rain at the time of Esha and Fajr, he would go to the Musjid holding an umbrella in one hand and a lantern in the other.

Once there was a heavy downpour at the time of Fajr. By then I had completed my formal studies and had begun teaching in Darul Uloom Deoband. I did not have the courage to go to the Musjid due to the torrential rain. Thus, thinking this to be a valid shar`ee excuse I performed my Salaah at home. However, even in this condition my father went to the Musjid. Upon reaching the Musjid he found that there was no one else besides the mu’azzin. Hence, both of them performed Salaah with jamaat. When he returned home, he reprimanded me saying: “Masha Allah! You have become an aalim. You are able to quote the Ahaadeeth of rukhsat (concession) but, tell me, if the Ulama continue looking for concessions, who will then practise upon azeemat? These masaajid will remain deserted.” (Mere waalid maajid, p. 22)

Towards the latter part of his life when he had become exceptionally weak, it became extremely difficult for him to leave the home in the severe heat and hot wind. During his final illness, in spite of being afflicted with severe bouts of diarrhoea and high fever, he would walk to the Musjid with the support of his walking stick. When eventually this became unmanageable he was forced to perform his Salaah at home for about five to six days.

During that period, he once mentioned to his son Mufti Muhammad Shafee` Sahib rahmtullahi alaih: ‘Shafee`! It seems that I will pass away on account of this diarrhoea. However, I am not grieved by this, for the Hadeeth has counted this as a form of shahaadat (martyrdom).’ It was the time of Maghrib on a Thursday night when his condition had seriously deteriorated. It seemed that he was on the throes of death. At that time my respected grandmother addressed my father: ‘Don’t go to Musjid to perform your Maghrib Salaah. Read your Salaah at home.’ This ardent lover of jamaat Salaah in this pitiful state told my father: ‘No. Go to the Musjid.’ Accordingly, my beloved father executed his instruction. The next morning at the time of subh saadiq he awakened my father saying: ‘Hurry up. I have to clean myself. My namaaz should not be made qadhaa.’ After cleaning him and changing his clothing he said: ‘Lift me up so that I could make wudhu.’ As my respected father lifted him, he noticed that his limbs were motionless and his eyes were raised to the sky. His condition had suddenly changed. After being made to lie down he felt at ease and in this state he began to engage in zikr, toubah and istighfaar etc. Then all of a sudden he told my grandmother: ‘Rasul maqbool Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam…’ This was all that could be heard clearly. He said a few other words which seemed to be ‘tashreef laaye (has come).’ The pangs of death had begun. He began reciting the kalimah until his voice subsided, but his tongue was still in motion. Eventually there was total silence and the reality of his constant du`aa materialised:

جب دم واپسیں ہو یا اللہ  –     لب پر ہو لاالہ الا اللہ

“O Allah! When the time approaches for my soul to return

Allow my lips to be engaged in reciting La ilaaha illallah”

Generally, people are extremely enthusiastic to take (the buzurg to their place) since they only consider their own motives. As far as others are concerned then they are inconsiderate. When Hadhrat returned, the jamaat Salaah was over. Seeing this, Hadhrat began to cry bitterly. I saw Hadhrat crying profusely on that day and he lamented: “We do not possess the reality of Salaah. All we have is the imitation. The correct manner of Salaah is unknown to us. We merely imitate Nabi Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. If this imitation also does not remain, then what else do we have!” (Tuhfat-ul-Madaaris, vol. 1, p. 491)

Concern for the Neighbour

Abdullah bin Ukht Muslim bin Sa’d (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) says: “I decided to proceed for Hajj, and my uncle handed me ten thousand dirhams with the instruction that they should be distributed to the poorest household in Madinah Munawwarah. When I arrived, I made enquiries, and was directed to a particular home. I knocked at the door and a woman opened. Upon enquiry of who I was, I replied: “I am from Baghdad and have ten thousand dirhams in my possession. I have been instructed to hand these over to the poorest household in Madinah Munawwarah, and I was directed to your home. Please take them.”

She replied: “The person who sent you with this money specified that it should be given to the poorest household. The family next door is more deserving than us.”

I thus proceeded to the family next door. I knocked and a woman answered. I explained the reason for my coming and she replied, “Our neighbour and us are equally poor. You should distribute the money equally between us.”

Hasan Basri (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) and his Tolerance of his Neighbour’s Dirt

Hasan Basri (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) lived in the bottom storey of a building. The sewage of the neighbour living at the upper storey used to leak into his home. Hasan Basri (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) ordered that a container be placed beneath that area so that the drops fall therein. At night, when there was no one to observe what was happening, he would take the container and dispose of the dirt. In this way, twenty years passed without him informing his neighbour. One day while he was ill, his neighbour from the upper storey who was a Christian came to visit him. When he saw the container filled with dirt and realized that the dirt was falling from his house, in embarrassment and shame he asked: “How long have you been enduring all this?” Hasan Basri (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) replied:  “For the last twenty years.” Upon hearing this, he removed his traditional Christian garment and immediately accepted Islam.
