Inviting to Islam

Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was a person with whom his people were well acquainted. He was beloved to his people and he was also soft and gentle in nature. He was the most knowledgeable regarding the lineage of the various tribes that were part of the Quraish. Similarly, he was the most knowledgeable regarding the conditions and history of the Quraish and the good and bad that transpired among the Quraish. He was a businessman who possessed excellent character and virtue. His people would come to him and confide in him regarding various affairs, due to his knowledge, business acumen and the benefit of sitting in his company.

Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) took advantage of his esteemed position among his people to invite them towards Allah Ta‘ala and Islam. He invited all those people of his tribe who had confidence in him, would frequently visit him and would sit in his company.

Through his invitation, many people accepted Islam. In fact, five of the ‘Asharah Mubasharah (ten Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) who were given the glad tidings of Jannah in one gathering) had accepted Islam through the invitation of Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). These five Sahaabah were:

1. Hazrat ‘Uthmaan bin ‘Affaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)

2. Hazrat Zubair bin ‘Awwaam (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)

3. Hazrat ‘Abdur Rahmaan bin ‘Auf (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)

4. Hazrat Sa’d bin Abi Waqqaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)

5. Hazrat Talhah bin ‘Ubaidillah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)

Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was the first among the free men to accept the invitation of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and enter into the fold of Islam. (Al-Bidaayah-wan-Nihaayah 3/28)

Spontaneously Accepting the Invitation of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) mentioned:

ما دعوت أحدا إلى الإسلام إلا كانت له عنه كبوة وتردد ونظر إلا أبا بكر ما عتم حين ذكرته له ما تردد فيه

(At the beginning of Islam,) whoever I invited to Islam expressed some reservation, uncertainty and doubt regarding it, with the exception of Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). When I invited him to Islam, he readily embraced it, without an iota of doubt and reservation.

Hazrat ‘Aa’ishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) reports that on the occasion of Mi’raaj, when Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was taken by night from Musjid Haraam to Musjid Aqsa (and thereafter to the seven heavens), then upon his return, he informed the people of Makkah regarding the miraculous journey that transpired during the night.

The people of Makkah doubted the words of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and thus began to ridicule him. Some people even reneged from Islam who had previously believed in Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). Nevertheless, when Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was informed by certain people (who were trying to provoke him) regarding what had transpired, he responded by saying, “Indeed I fully testify to what Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) has said. I have believed him in that which is even more difficult to believe, I believe him when he says that revelation comes to him from the heavens to the earth in a single moment during the night or day (so why should I then doubt him in this matter?).”

It was after this incident that he received the title As-Siddeeq (the most truthful).

Name: ‘Abdullah bin ‘Uthmaan bin ‘Aamir

Kunyah (filial title): Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)

Father’s name: ‘Uthmaan, Abu Quhaafah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)

Mother’s name: Salmaa bint Sakhr, Ummul Khair (radhiyallahu ‘anha)

Titles: Al-‘Ateeq and As-Siddeeq

The Reason for being Given the Title Al-‘Ateeq:

Hazrat ‘Abdullah bin Zubair (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that on one occasion, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) turned his mubaarak gaze towards Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and mentioned:

هذا عتيق الله من النار

The Bond of love between Hazrat Ali and Hazrat Abu Bakr and Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=12870 Mon, 22 Oct 2018 14:01:31 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=12870 Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)’s love for Hazrat Abu Bakr and Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) can be understood from the fact that he named his children after them viz. Abu Bakr bin Ali and Umar bin Ali (rahimahumallah). (Tabaqaat ibnu Sa’d 3/14)

As far as Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) is concerned, the bond of love that he enjoyed with Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) can be clearly seen from the following incident:

Hazrat Anas (radiyallahu ‘anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was once seated in the Musjid with the Sahaabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum). Hazrat Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) then arrived, made salaam, and then remained standing, looking for a place to sit. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) looked at the faces of the Sahaabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) to see which of them would make place for him. Hazrat Abu Bakr (radiyallahu ‘anhu), who was seated on the right of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), immediately moved from his place and said, “Come here, O Abul Hasan.” Hazrat Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) then sat in the place of Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), between Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and Hazrat Abu Bakr (radiyallahu ‘anhu). The Sahaabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) could actually see the happiness on the blessed face of Rasulullah (sallallahun ‘alaihi wasallam) on account of Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) giving Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) his place and honouring him. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then turned to Hazrat Abu Bakr (radiyallahu ‘anhu) and said, “O Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)! It is only people of virtue who recognise the virtue of other people of virtue.” (Bidaayah-wan-Nihaayah 7/358, Maqaasid-ul-Hasanah #212)

In the above incident, we can see that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) testified to the virtue of both personalities; Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).

As far as Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) is concerned, Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) got him married to his daughter, Hazrat Ummu Kulthoom (radhiyallahu ‘anha). This is one of the greatest proofs to show the bond of love between Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). (Isaabah 8/465)

The Very First People to Accept Islam – Part Three https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=12846 Wed, 17 Oct 2018 05:16:56 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=12846

Whenever the hour of salaah would approach, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would perform his salaah secretly in a valley or mountain pass.

On one occasion, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was performing his salaah with Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) in a certain mountain pass when Abu Taalib suddenly came their way. Until that time, Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) had not revealed his Islam to his parents, uncles and other relatives. Abu Taalib addressed Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asking, “O nephew! What religion is this? What kind of worship is this?”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “Uncle! This is the Deen of Allah Ta‘ala, His angels and all His prophets, especially the Deen of our forefather, Hazrat Ebrahim (‘alaihis salaam). Allah Ta‘ala has made me His Rasul and deputed me to all His servants. You are most deserving of my advice. I invite you towards goodness and divine guidance. You, before anyone else, should accept this divine guidance and true religion and give me assistance and support in Deen.”

Abu Taalib replied, “Nephew! I cannot renounce the religion of my forefathers, but I assure you that nobody will harm you.”

He then turned to Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) asking, “Son! What is this religion that you have chosen?” Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) replied, “Father! I have brought Imaan in Allah Ta‘ala and His Rasul (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and I believe in whatever he conveys to us from Allah Ta‘ala. I worship Allah Ta‘ala with him and I am his devoted follower.” Abu Taalib remarked, “This is the best for you. He has invited you to pure goodness. Don’t leave him and don’t abandon him.”

The Islam of Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) – Part One https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=12835 Tue, 16 Oct 2018 13:46:19 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=12835

When all his household members accepted Islam, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) invited his intimate friends and close associates to embrace this great blessing of Islam.

The first person that he invited to bring Imaan and accept Islam was his faithful friend, his childhood acquaintance and his intimate confidant, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). Without hesitating for even a moment, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) accepted Rasulullah’s (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) invitation the moment it was extended to him.

urdu poem

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) presented the truth and Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) submitted to it. A single tasdeeq (belief) transformed him into a siddeeq (passionate believer).

In one Hadith, Rasululullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Every person to whom I presented Islam showed some degree of hesitation, except for Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). He embraced Islam without any hesitation at all.”

When Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) was asked, “Who was the first person to embrace Islam?” he replied, “Among the free men, it was Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). Among the women, it was Hazrat Khadijah (radhiyallahu ‘anha). The first slave to embrace Islam was Hazrat Zaid bin Haarithah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), while Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was the first child to enter the fold of Islam.”

The Love of the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) for the Ahl-e-Bayt https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=12735 Mon, 01 Oct 2018 14:26:14 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=12735 The Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) enjoyed the greatest relationship of brotherhood of Islam among themselves. The deep-rooted love, affection and concern that each had for the other was unprecedented in the annals of Islam. Over and above this relationship, the relationship that the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) had with the Ahl-e-Bayt was one of utmost reverence, respect and love.

Generally, the Shiahs spread the misconception that the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) did not have love for the Ahl-e-Bayt. However, this notion is incorrect. The compilations of Hadith are replete with narrations and incidents that reveal the strong bond and intense love which existed between the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) and the Ahl-e-Bayt. We will next present various narrations to illustrate the bond of brotherhood of Islam which they enjoyed among themselves.

The love of Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) for the Ahl-e-Bayt

On one occasion, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) mentioned, “Maintaining ties with the family of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) is more beloved to me than maintaining ties with my own family.” (Saheeh Bukhaari #3712)

From this narration, it is clear that Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) loved the Ahl-e-Bayt more than he loved his own family. This was on account of the Ahl-e-Bayt being the blessed family of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). Hence, it is absolutely incorrect for one to think that Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) did not have love for the Ahl-e-Bayt.

Hadhrat Jubair bin Mut’im (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that a woman once came to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and consulted with Nabi (Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam) regarding a certain matter. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) counselled her and gave her advice. (Before leaving) she asked Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam): “O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), in the future if I have to come to Madina Tayyiba for guidance and I do not find you present?” (i.e. if you have already passed away, then who should I go to for guidance?) Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied: “If you do not find me present, then go to Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu).”

Spending on the occasion of Tabook https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3916 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3916#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2013 05:19:38 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3916 gold barsHadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that on the occasion of Tabook, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) encouraged the Sahaabah (Radhiallahu Anhum) to spend in the path of Allah Ta’ala. It so happened that during those days, I was in possession of some wealth. I thus thought to myself that Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) always surpasses me in spending for the sake of Allah Ta’ala. If there is any occasion, that perhaps I will be able to surpass him, it will be this occasion. I thus went home, and with this intention, divided my entire property into half. I left one half for my family, and with the other I proceeded to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and presented the wealth before him. Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) addressed me saying:

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam): “O Umar! Did you leave anything for your family?”

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu): “Yes, O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).”

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam): “How much did you leave for them?”

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu): “I left half of my entire wealth.”

Subsequently, Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) came forward and presented his entire contribution to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) asked him,

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam): “What did you leave for your family, O Abu Bakr?”

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu): “I have left Allah and his Rasul (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) for them.”

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) thereafter says that on that day he realised the esteem rank and position of Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) and that he would never be able to surpass Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu). [1]

The Close Bond with Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3868 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3868#respond Mon, 14 Jan 2013 05:20:55 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3868 treatyIn the sixth year after hijrat, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and the Sahaabah (Radhiallahu anhum) set out on the journey from Madina Munawwarah to Makkah Mukarramah with the intention of performing umrah. All the Sahaabah (Radhiallahu Anhum), especially the muhaajireen, earnestly anticipated visiting the holy city of Makkah Mukarramah and once again be blessed with the opportunity of performing tawaaf of the Baitullah. En route to Makkah Mukarramah, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) received information regarding the Quraysh preparing an army to combat the Muslims in war. Consequently, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) changed his route until they reached a place known as Hudaybiyyah.

After many envoys of the Quraysh met Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) at Hudaybiyyah and a chain of events ensued, finally the Quraysh agreed to enter into a peace treaty with Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and the Sahaabah (Radhiallahu Anhum), provided that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and the Sahaabah adhere to all their conditions. This treaty was famously known as the treaty of Hudaybiyyah. One of the conditions of the treaty was that the Muslims had to return to Madina Munawwarah without performing Umrah that year. Also, there were many other clauses enlisted in the treaty which were unjust and partial.

In the broader interests of Islam and due to the wahy (revelation) received from Allah Ta’ala, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) relented to every condition laid down by the Quraysh. Viewing the oppression and tyranny from the side of the Quraysh, Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) could not help but express his displeasure at that juncture. Hence, he presented himself before Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and posed the following questions:

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu): O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), are you not the messenger of Allah Ta’ala?

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam): Yes, indeed I am the messenger of Allah Ta’ala.

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu): Are we not on the path of truth whilst they are on the path of misguidance?

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam): Certainly, we are on the path of truth.

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu): If we are on the truth then why are we relenting to their unjust conditions and why are we giving in to all their demands?

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam): O Umar, certainly I am the Rasul and the true messenger of Allah Ta’ala. I will not disobey his commands. He is my helper and supporter.

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu): O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), didn’t you inform us that we will be performing tawaaf of the Baitullah?

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam): Yes, I did inform you that we will make tawaaf. However I did not inform you that we will make tawaaf this year.

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) thereafter went to Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) and the following dialogue ensued:

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu): O Abu Bakr, is Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) not the messenger of Allah Ta’ala?

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu): Yes, indeed he is the messenger of Allah Ta’ala.

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu): Are we not on the true path whilst they are on the path of misguidance?

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu): Certainly, we are on the path of truth.

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu): If we are on the truth then why are we relenting to their unjust conditions and why are we giving in to all their demands?

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu): O Umar, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) is the messenger of Allah Ta’ala. He will not disobey His commands. Allah Ta’ala is his helper and supporter.

Note: From the above dialogue between Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) and Hadhrat Umar Farooq (Radhiallahu Anhu) we observe the close bond between Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) and Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), to such an extent that without him being present at the time when Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) answered Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu), and without being informed about their dialogue, his response to the questions posed by Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) was identical to the response of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) says: “After this incident, I was extremely ashamed at the manner I conducted before Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). As a means of atonement, I performed abundant nafl salaah, observed many optional fasts, distributed large amounts in charity and freed many slaves for the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala.” [1]

Participation in the Battles of Islam https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3786 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3786#respond Sat, 29 Dec 2012 14:02:17 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3786 jihaadHadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) participated in the battle of Badr as well as all the battles of Islam, fighting alongside Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). During the battle of Uhud, when the Muslims suffered a temporary defeat and some began to retreat in panic, Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) was from amongst those Sahaabah that remained steadfast defending Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and fighting for Islam.

On the occasion of the battle of Badr, the Sahaabah (Radhiallahu Anhum) had built a shelter for Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) to rest in. Before the battle commenced, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) persistently implored Allah Ta’ala in his duaa to send down His divine aid and bless the Muslims with victory. He raised his hands so high in Duaa that his shawl fell off his shoulders. Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) seeing the blessed shawl of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) fall off his mubaarak shoulders, immediately picked up the shawl, and placed it back on his shoulders. He pitied the condition of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), hence addressed him saying, “O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), you have persisted in supplicating and begging Allah Ta’ala. Do not worry, surely Allah Ta’ala will answer your Duaa and fulfil what He has promised you.” Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) thereafter sat down and rested for a short while. After a little while, he stood up addressing Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) in the following words, “Glad tidings, O Abu Bakr! The help of Allah Ta’ala has come to us. Here is Hadhrat Jibra’eel (Alaihis Salaam), who has been sent by Allah Ta’ala. He is holding the reins of his galloping horse, thereby causing the dust to fly about.” [1]

Hadhrat Ali (Radhiallahu Anhu) once addressed the people saying, “From all the Sahaabah, Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) was the bravest and most courageous. On the occasion of Badr, it was Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) who stood besides Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) defending him from the attack of the enemies. None of us could match him on that day.” [2]

Love for Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)

During the battle of Badr, Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu)’s son, Hadhrat Abdur Rahmaan, fought on the side of the disbelievers as he had not yet accepted Islam. Later, after embracing Islam, whilst seated with his father Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu), he exclaimed, “O my beloved father, during the battle of Badr, you came under my sword a few times. However, considering you being my father, I spared you.” Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) spontaneously retorted, “Had you only come under my sword during the battle, I would have never spared you, as you were fighting against Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).” [3]

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) was overwhelmed with emotion and wept profusely saying: “How I wish that my entire life’s endeavour and sacrifice were exchanged for just one day and night of the life of Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu). The night I am prepared to bargain my entire life for, is the night he travelled with Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) to the cave of Thawr during the journey of Hijrat.” In another narration it is recorded that Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) said: “That night of Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) is greater than Hadhrat Umar and the entire family of Hadhrat Umar.”[1]

The Hijrat (Migration) – Part 5 – Reaching the Destination https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3616 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3616#respond Sat, 22 Dec 2012 13:52:06 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3616 musjid qubaWhen the Sahaabah (Radiallahu Anhum) heard of Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) departing from Makkah Mukarramah for the hijrat, they eagerly anticipated their arrival in Madina Munawwarah. Each day after performing their Fajr salaah, they would proceed to the outskirts of Madina Munawwarah, awaiting the arrival of the master (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). However, as the day progressed and the heat of the sun became intense, they would return to their homes. They continued in this manner until the auspicious day finally arrived when Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) reached Quba.

Even on this day, following their routine, the Sahaabah (Radhiallahu Anhum), with great fervour and enthusiasm, emerged from their homes and came out to the outskirts to welcome Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). However, after waiting a while till the sun rose and the heat began to intensify, due to there being still no sight of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu), they returned to Madina Munawwarah. Shortly after the return of the Sahaabah to Madina Munawwarah, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) arrived at Quba. The first person to catch sight of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) was a Jew, who had climbed a hill in order to fulfil some need. No sooner that his sight fell upon them, he felt convinced that these are the people for whom the Sahaabah and the Ansaar of Madina Munawwarah were earnestly awaiting. Hence, he called out to the Ansaar of Madina Munawwarah, giving them the glad tidings of the arrival of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu).

The moment the Ansaar heard the delightful news, they were overwhelmed with joy and ecstasy, and in the multitudes they hastened to receive Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), and in extreme happiness, the sounds of Takbeer were echoed throughout the entire locality of Quba.

Till that time most of the Ansaar of Madina Munawwarah, had not yet met Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), hence they could not distinguish who was Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and who was Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu). At the time they proceeded to meet Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) was resting under a date palm. In consideration for Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)’s ease and comfort, and in order to allow him the opportunity to rest after being fatigued from the long journey, Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) stood up to meet the people. Many from the Ansaar met Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) assuming him to be Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and till this point Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) continued to meet the people and did not reveal to them that he was not Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). This was done solely out of deep love and consideration for Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)’s comfort. However, once the shade moved, and the sun was now shining directly on Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) stood up to shade Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) with his shawl. Then only did the people realise who Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) was.

During a short stay of a few days in Quba, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) established the first musjid in Islam, i.e. Musjid Quba. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) later departed for Madina Munawwarah on a Friday. En route to Madina Munawwarah, the time of Jum’uah had set in. Hence Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) stopped by the locality of Banu Saalim to perform the Jum’uah salaah. This was the first Jum’uah performed in the history of Islam.

Thereafter, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) continued to the blessed land of Madina Munawwarah. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) mounted his camel and (though Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) had his own camel), Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) seated him directly behind himself in order to reveal the lofty rank and esteemed position he held in the sight of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). A vast number of the Ansaar, well equipped with their weaponry, accompanied Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Some accompanied him on his right, some on his left, and some behind him.

Hadhrat Anas (Radhiallahu Anhu), depicting the scene of the happy and joyous occasion when Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) entered Madina Munawwarah at the time of the hijrat, said: “When Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) entered Madina Munawwarah, the whole of Madina Munawwarah was illuminated and glowed with radiance.” [1]

The Hijrat (Migration) – Part 4 – The Story of Umme Ma’bad (Radhiallahu Anha) https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3399 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3399#respond Sat, 15 Dec 2012 13:55:29 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3399

En route to Madinah Munawwarah, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) passed by the tent of Ummu Ma’bad (Radhiallahu Anha). She was a woman renowned for her nobility and hospitality. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) stopped by in order to purchase some dates and meat from her, but she had nothing available to offer them as they were experiencing famine and drought.

Subsequently Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)’s mubaarak glance had fallen onto a young she goat in the corner of the tent. He enquired from Ummu Ma’bad (Radhiallahu Anha) regarding the goat that was tied, and the following dialogue ensued:

Umme Ma’bad: “This goat is extremely frail and weak and thus unable to graze in the pastures with the rest of the herd.”

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam): “Does she have any milk?”

Umme Ma’bad: “She is too weak to give any milk.”

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam): “Do you permit me to milk her?”

Umme Ma’bad: “May my parents be sacrificed for you. If you wish to milk her, you may do so.”

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) placed his mubaarak hands over the udders, recited the name of Allah Ta’aala (i.e. recited Bismillah) and earnestly supplicated to Allah Ta’aala to send down His mercy. It is reported in one narration that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) supplicated to Allah Ta’aala with the following Duaa:

اَللّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهَا فِي شَاتِهَا

“O Allah, grant Umme Ma’bad special barakah (blessings) in her goat.”

The she goat immediately spread its legs apart before Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and the udders began filling up with milk. The sick animal no longer remained sick through the barkat of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)’s duaa, to such an extent that it began regurgitating. A large container, which could satiate eight to ten people, was brought and Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) began milking the goat. After milking the goat, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) offered the milk to Umme Ma’bad (Radhiallahu Anha), who drank to her fill. He then offered the container to his companions (i.e. Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu), Hadhrat Aamir ibn Fuhayra, Abdullah ibn Urayqit). After all had drunk to their fill, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) drank the milk saying: “The one who offers a drink to others should drink last.” He then milked the goat again until the container was filled till the brim with milk once more. He then handed over the container to Umme Ma’bad (so that it could serve for her and her husband’s needs). Hadhrat Umme Ma’bad (Radhiallahu Anha) by then was convinced that this was no ordinary personality, and she immediately embraced Islam. Shortly thereafter, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) and their companions set out and continued on their journey to Madina Munawwarah.

In the evening, when Abu Ma’bad returned home after grazing the goats, he was surprised to find a large container of milk in the tent. In utter amazement, he enquired from Ummu Ma’bad regarding the milk saying: “Where did this milk come from, O Umme Ma’bad? Whereas at the time I left our sick she goat did not have a drop of milk in its udders!” She replied: “Today the messenger of Allah Ta’aala passed this way. By Allah! Whatever you see is due to his blessings.” She then went on and gave a detailed account of what had transpired in her husband’s absence. Abu Ma’bad retorted: “Tell me more about him and describe to me his noble personality.” Umme Ma’bad (Radhiallahu Anha) described to him Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)’s mubaarak features, his nobility, and sublime character.

Upon hearing the description of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), Abu Ma’bad said: “I take a qasm on Allah Ta’ala that this is the same man from the Quraysh whom we have heard about. Had I been present, I would have certainly accompanied him on his journey.”

Hafidh Ibn Katheer (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) mentions that both Abu Ma’bad and Umme Ma’bad had accepted Islam and migrated to Madina Munawwarah.

While the mu’jizah of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) manifested in the tent of Umme Ma’bad (Radhiallahu Anha), a call was heard in Makkah Mukarramah from a Muslim Jinn. The Muslim Jinn addressed the disbelievers of Makkah Mukarramah with the following message, in a manner that the message was distinctly heard, and the caller was unknown:

جزى الله رب الناس خير جزائه     رفيقين حلا خيمتي أم معبد

May Allah Ta’ala, the Lord of the people, grant the best rewards to the two companions (Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu), who stopped over (during the journey to Madina Munawwara) at the tent of Umme Ma’bad.

هما نزلاها بالهدى فاهتدت به       فقد فاز من أمسى رفيق محمد

They had come with divine guidance, and she embraced the guidance (of Islam). Surely the one who accompanied Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) during the journey of hijrat (i.e. Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu)) has obtained eternal success.

ليهن ابا بكر سعادة جده        بصحبته من يسعد الله يسعد

Congratulations to Abu Bakr on the good fortune and blessings he acquired due to his companionship with Rasululah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). He who Allah Ta’ala divinely selects is indeed among the fortunate ones.

ليهن بني كعب مقام فتاتهم      ومقعدها للمؤمنين بمرصد

Congratulations to the Banu Ka’b on account of the noble and esteemed position that their daughter had acquired, securing the opportunity of hosting Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and the believers.

سلوا أختكم عن شاتها وإنائها       فإنكم إن تسألوا الشاة تشهد

Ask your sister about her goat and her container. If you had to ask the goat, it would certainly also testify

فغادرها رهناً لديها لحالب      يرددها في مصدر ثم مورد

He then left the goat (as a blessing) in her trust, and she would milk it for those who happened to pass by.[1]

The Hijrat (Migration) -Part 3- Incident with Suraaqa bin Maalik https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3308 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3308#respond Sat, 08 Dec 2012 15:13:54 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3308 Incident with Suraaqa bin Maalik

When Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) reached the settlement of Qudayd which lay on their route, a person went up to the Banu Mudlaj tribe (who lived there) and told them, “I have seen two riders travelling near the coast. I think that they are the same people from the Quraysh regarding whom you are in search of.”

Suraaqa bin Maalik bin Ju’shum, who was present in that gathering, responded saying, “Those are not the people we are in search of, instead they are two men whom we have sent out to do some work for the people.”  Suraaqa, however, knew that the riders were most probably Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu), but he wished to secure the reward of one hundred camels for himself through capturing Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu). Suraaqa then called for his slave woman and whispered to her to bring his horse to him. He then set out in pursuit of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu).

He travelled swiftly and reached a point from where he could see Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu). Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) (who was turning around repeatedly to see whether they were being followed by anyone), spotted him from a distance and called out to Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam): “O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), we are being followed by someone and soon we will be caught.”  Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) was engaged in the recitation of the Qur’aan at that time. Calmly, he answered Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) saying:

لاَ تَحْزَنْ إنَّ اللهَ مَعَنَا

“Do not grieve, certainly Allah Ta’aala is with us."

When Suraaqa was at a close distance, Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) was overcome with fear and worry, and thus began to cry. Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) asked: “What causes you to cry, O Abu Bakr?” Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) replied: “I take a qasm, O Nabi of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), that I am not crying out of fear for losing my life, rather I am only crying out of the fear that harm will come to you.”  Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) supplicated to Allah Ta’aala in the following words: “O Allah, deal with him (Suraaqa) on our behalf as You please.”

No sooner did Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) make this duaa that Suraaqa who was travelling with tremendous speed, found the legs of his horse sinking into the ground and himself falling over. Suraaqa pulled out an arrow from his quiver (complying with the superstitious ways of the ancient Arabs, that before embarking on any mission they would draw lots with the arrows in their quiver whereupon signs indicating goodness or evil were written on in order to determine the future success or failure in the mission they were embarking on). The indication on the arrow showed failure and that he should not proceed. However, Suraaqa ignored the indication and in the desire of acquiring the reward, decided to once again attempt capturing Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu). To his utter surprise, he found his horse sinking to the ground in the manner it happened previously. He decided to once again refer to the arrows to determine whether pursuing them would be favourable, and once again the indication on the arrow turned negative.

By now Suraaqa was convinced that he was fighting against a divine force and would not succeed. Hence, he humbly called out to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) saying, “O Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)! I have firm conviction that I am being faced with this trial on account of the curse that you have placed upon me, and I swear by Allah Ta’aala that I will not harm you and I will turn away every other person I meet who is searching for you. I beg you to ask Allah Ta’aala that I be saved from this calamity.”

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) thereupon beseeched Allah Ta’aala to rescue him from the calamity that had afflicted him. Suraaqa, who was blood thirsty for the blood of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) a few moments ago, upon meeting Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) presented his food before Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and respectfully requested Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam) to partake thereof. However, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) politely refused.

Suraaqa then removed an arrow from his quiver and addressed Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) saying, “O Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)! Take this arrow of mine, and when you pass by a certain place you will find my camels and goats grazing. Show this arrow to the shepherds as proof of you gaining permission from my side to take whatever you desire from my wealth.” Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied, “I have no need for your wealth.” Suraaqa thereafter asked Raulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) for written security, to which Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) acceded. Suraaqa then left the presence of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) to return to his people, and whomsoever he met on the path he turned them away saying that I have checked this path thoroughly and I am sure that they have not taken this route.

After some while, when Suraaqa met Abu Jahl, he recounted his entire encounter with Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) and thereafter he addressed Abu Jahl saying:

أَبَا حَكَم وَاللهِ لَوْ كُنْتَ شَاهِدًا            لِأَمْرِ جَوَادِي حِيْنَ سَاخَتْ قَوَائِمُهُ

عَلِمْتَ وَلَم تَشْكُكْ بِأنَّ مُحَمَّدًا                   نَبِيٌّ بِبُرْهَانٍ فَمَنْ ذَا يُقَاوِمُهُ

O Abu Hakam (Abu Jahl) I take a qasm on Allah Ta’aala, had you witnessed the spectacle when my horse’s legs sunk into the ground.

You would have surely realised that Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) is a true messenger of Allah Ta’aala. So who can combat this divine force?    [1]

The Hijrat (Migration) -Part 2- Pursuit of the Quraysh https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3243 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3243#respond Sat, 01 Dec 2012 05:31:41 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3243

The Pursuit of the Quraysh and Allah Ta’aala’s Divine Help

When the Quraysh learnt that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) had left Makkah Mukarramah, they dispatched search parties to find them and fixed a reward of a hundred camels for anyone who captured Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) or Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu). They scoured the mountains of Makkah Mukarramah and eventually reached the mountain of Thowr where Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) remained in hiding. At that time, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) was performing salaah while Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) remained on the alert. Hadhrat Abu Bakr (Radhiallahu Anhu) was in great fear and worry that no harm should come to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). After a little while Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) had seen the Quraysh approaching, hence he addressed Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) saying, “O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), the Quraysh have come in search of us. By Allah! I have no concern for my life but I do not want any harm to come to you.” Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) allayed his fears saying, “O Abu Bakr! Do not fear, since we are not alone, certainly Allah is with us.”

When the Quraysh drew extremely close to the cave, Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) became extremely worried. Addressing Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) he said:  “O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), if any of them has to just look down towards his feet, he would definitely see us.” Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) consoled Hadhrat  Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) saying, “O Abu Bakr! Do you think we are only two? No, certainly Allah Ta’aala is with us.” Allah Ta’aala makes mention of this incident in the Qur’aan Majeed:

ثَانِيَ اثْنَيْنِ إِذْ هُمَا فِي الْغَارِ إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَاحِبِهِ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللَّـهَ مَعَنَا

As for one of the two (Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) when they were in the cave, and he said to his companion (Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu): Do not grieve, verily Allah Ta’aala is with us.

Allah Ta’aala commanded a spider to spin its web at the entrance of the cave. A tree immediately grew from the ground before Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) at the mouth of the cave and two pigeons were divinely sent to lay eggs on the tree. When the Quraysh climbed the mountain and reached the entrance of the cave, their eyes had fallen on the spider’s web and the nest of the pigeons containing the eggs. They were convinced that no one could have entered the cave without the web breaking. One of the men stood directly in front of the entrance of the cave facing Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu). Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) being overcome with fear and concern for Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) exclaimed: “O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) it seems like this person can see us!”

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “Never! Allah Ta’aala has divinely appointed the malaaikah to protect and conceal us with their wings.” Not long thereafter, the same person sat down to pass urine. Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) remarked: “Had he been able to see us, he would have not passed urine at this spot.”

They remained in the cave for three days and three nights, and every night during that time Hadhrat Aamir bin Fuhayra, the freed slave of Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) would bring the goats of Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) secretly to the cave so that they could benefit from the milk. Thereafter, he would return with the herd before the morning so that no one becomes suspicious. Hadhrat Abdullah, the son of Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) used to spend the day in Makkah Mukkaramah finding out the news and at nightfall he used to secretly come to the cave to inform Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) regarding what was transpiring in Makkah Mukarramah. He would then leave late at night and return to Makkah Mukkaramah by dawn.[1]

Departing for Madina Munawwarah

After spending three days and three nights in the cave, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) left the cave and set out towards Madina Munawwarah. Abdullah ibn Urayqit and Aamir bin Fuhayrah also accompanied them on the journey. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) sat on one camel and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) sat on the other camel while Aamir bin Fuhayrah sat behind him. Abdullah ibn Urayqit had his own camel during this journey. Abdullah ibn Urayqit, the guide, took them on a route which was along the coast. This route was not the normal route used by the Arabs to travel to Madina Munawwarah. Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) was renowned amongst the Arabs, hence, whenever anyone met him, they would enquire from him regarding the person who he was accompanying on the journey (referring to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). He would reply, “He is the guide who is showing me the way.” They would understand that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) was guiding him along the journey, whereas Hadhrat Abu Bakr (Radhiallahu Anhu)’s intention was that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) is his guide towards Allah Ta’aala and the Aakhirat.[2]

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu)’s Preparations for the Hijrah

Hadhrat Aa'isha (Radhiallahu Anha) narrates that not a day would pass wherein Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) had not visited us either in the morning or evening. This was his mubaarak habit until the day arrived when Allah Ta’aala permitted him to migrate and leave Makkah Mukarramah.  On that day, contrary to his routine, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) came to our home at midday. As soon as Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) saw Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) coming, he remarked, ‘Certainly an important matter has brought Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) at this unusual time.’ When Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) entered our home, then out of respect and reverence Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) moved from his place and allowed Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) to be seated.  My sister Hadhrat Asmaa (Radhiallahu Anha) and I (Hadhrat Aa'isha (Radhiallahu Anha)), were with our father Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) at the time Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) arrived at our home. There was nobody else present with us. Subsequently, the following conversation ensued between Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu):

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam): “I need to discuss something in private with you.”

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu): “O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)! May my parents be sacrificed for you, it is only my two daughters (who are present) whom we can trust.”

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam): “Permission has come from Allah Ta’aala to migrate to Madina Tayyiba.”

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu): “May I accompany you on the journey of hijrat, O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)?”

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam): “Certainly, you may accompany me.”

Upon receiving permission from Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) to accompany him, hadhrat Abu Bakr (Radhiallahu Anhu) began to weep out of joy. When Hadhrat Aaisha (Radhiallahu Anha) witnessed this spectacle, she was surprised and later on she would say: “I swear by Allah Ta’aala that I had never knew a person could cry out of joy and happiness, until I witnessed my father, Hadhrat Abu Bakr (Radhiallahu Anhu) cry on the day he received glad tidings from Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) to accompany Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) on the journey of Hijrat).”

Thereafter Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) addressing Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “O Nabi of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) I have two camels that I have been rearing from a long time in anticipation for this day. You may have anyone that is pleasing to you as a gift from my side.”

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam): “I am only prepared to accept it in lieu of its price, O Abu Bakr.” (i.e. whatever it cost you)

Hadhrat Abu Bakr: “May my parents be sacrificed for you! If this is pleasing to you, then you may have it in lieu of its price.”

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) then hired Abdullaah bin Urayqit as a guide to direct them along their journey. (Abdullaah bin Urayqit was a disbeliever from the Banu Laith tribe. Since Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) trusted him, they hired him to direct them along the journey of hijrat.) They gave him their two camels to take care of and graze them until the appointed day.”

Hadhrat Asmaa (Radhiallahu Anha) says, “Before they could depart, we prepared the food for their journey. I cut my belt into two and used part of it to tie their provisions, and the other for my personal use.” [1]

The Departure

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) set out for the Hijrat early at night. During the journey, at times Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) walked ahead of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), and at times behind. At times he walked on the right of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and at times on the left. When Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) noticed this peculiar behaviour, he asked, “O Abu Bakr! I see you moving in front of me or behind me at times and beside me at times. What prompts you to behave in this way?” Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) replied, “Whenever the thought of the enemy pursuing you from the back occurs to me, I move swiftly towards the back, and whenever the fear overcomes me of the enemy waiting ahead in ambush, then I rush ahead of you. Likewise, when the thought crosses my mind of the enemy attacking from the right or left, then I move in that direction.”

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) then said, “O Abu Bakr! Do you prefer that your life be sacrificed for me?” Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) replied, “Most definitely O Messenger of Allah, I swear by the Being who has sent you with the truth of Islam!”

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) further relates, “We travelled hastily the entire day and night until the afternoon heat became intense. I then looked ahead to see whether I could find any shade so that we could take shelter through it. I then spotted a cave which we could take refuge in and seek shelter from the heat. I then said: O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), remain outside the cave and allow me to enter so that if there is any harmful creature in the cave, it will harm me and not you. After entering the cave I began cleaning it and spread out a cloth upon which Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) could lie down. I then requested him to enter and take a rest and he acceded to my request. Once Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) laid down to rest, I went to see whether I could spot anyone who was searching for us. I then spotted a shepherd nearby and asked him who was his owner. He named a man from the Quraysh whom I knew.  (As it was a prevalent custom at that time that people would allow travellers and wayfarers to benefit from the milk from their flock, Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) requested for some milk and the following dialogue ensued):

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu): “Do any of the goats have milk?”

The shepherd: “Yes.”

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu): “Will you milk some for me?”

He agreed, and milked one of the goats for me and poured it into my container. I added some water to the milk to cool the hot milk. I then took the milk to present it to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). As I approached Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), I found him awake. I said, “Partake of this, O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).” The sight of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) relishing the milk brought extreme joy and happiness to my heart.” [2]

In the cave

During the time spent in the cave with Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), it is reported that Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) was concerned that no creature come out from any hole in the cave and harm Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Thus, he began closing all the holes found inside the cave with pieces of his lower garment. However, there were still two holes which he was unable to close (due to insufficient clothing), so Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) placed his both feet in those holes.

Thereafter, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) placed his mubaarak head on the lap of Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anu) and fell asleep. While Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) was asleep, Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) perceived a bite under his foot by a snake in the hole. Not wishing to inconvenience and disturb the sleep of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) in the least, Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) bore the pain and did not move an inch. However, being in excruciating pain and not being able to withstand the effects, uncontrollably tears began to roll down the face of Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) and fell on the mubaarak countenance of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) suddenly awoke and asked: “What has happened, O Abu Bakr?” Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) replied: “I have been bitten, may my parents be sacrificed for you O Rasulullah (sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).” Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) placed his mubaarak saliva on the affected area, and the pain immediately subsided. [3]

Hadhrat Abu Bakr (Radhiallahu Anhu) intending to migrate to Madina Munawwarah https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3040 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3040#respond Sat, 17 Nov 2012 14:06:49 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3040 hijrah

After the injunction of Hijrat had come down from Allah Ta’aala, most of the Sahaabah migrated to Madina Tayyibah. Similarly, those Sahaabah who migrated to Abyssinia, (after learning that the Sahaabah had migrated to Madina Tayyibah), also moved on to Madina Tayyibah, until such a time that there was nobody left from the believers in Makkah Mukarramah besides Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) and his family, Hadhrat Ali (Radhiallahu Anhu) and those few oppressed believers who were imprisoned by the disbelievers and not allowed to migrate.

Until then, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) was not yet granted permission to migrate to Madina Tayyibah. It was at that time that Hadrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) intended setting out on the journey to Madina Tayyibah. Prior to departing from Makkah Mukarramah, Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) came to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) to inform him of his plans and bid him farewell. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) loved Hadrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) so dearly (as Hadhrat Abu Bakr (Radhiallahu Anhu) loved Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)), that he asked him to postpone his migration in order to accompany Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) on the journey of Hijrat at the time permission will be granted to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) asked Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), “Do you think Allah Ta’aala will allow you soon to migrate?” Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam) answered in the affirmative. Immediately Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) made preparations for the journey by purchasing two camels which he fed the leaves of the Acacia tree four months before the Hijrat, anxiously awaiting the command of Allah Ta’aala to migrate…[1]

Hadhrat Abu Bakr (Radhiallahu Anhu) Intends Migrating to Abyssinia on account of the Hardships https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3036 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3036#respond Sat, 17 Nov 2012 14:02:33 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=3036 Hijrah to Abyssinia on account of the Hardships

Hadhrat Aa'isha (Radhiallahu Anha) says, “(From my youth) the only religion I found my parents strictly adhering to was the Deen of Islam. Not a day would pass wherein Rasulullaah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) had not visited us in the morning and evening. When the Muslims were being tortured and persecuted mercilessly, (my father) Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) decided to migrate to Abyssinia. When he reached a place called Barkul Ghimaad, Ibnud Daghina, the leader of the Qaara tribe, met him and the following dialogue ensued:

Ibnud Daghina: “Where are you off to, O Abu Bakr?”

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu): “My people have driven me out of my homeland through the ongoing torture and persecution. I intend migrating to another land in order that I be able to worship my Lord peacefully.”

Ibnud Daghina: “O Abu Bakr! It does not behove a man of your calibre to leave a land nor be driven out by his people. You are renowned for earning and providing sustenance to those who are unable to earn for themselves, you uphold the rights of kinship, you carry the burdens of others (i.e. settling their debts and assisting them), you show hospitality to your guests and you are there for the people (aiding and assisting them) at the time of natural disasters and calamities (e.g. at the time of famine and drought). O Abu Bakr! Return to your land, for I have granted you protection and security, go and worship your Lord in peace."

Ibnud Daghina then returned with Hadhrat Abu Bakr (Radhiallahu Anhu) and he went around to all the leaders of the Quraysh informing them, “It does not behove a man of the calibre of Abu Bakr to leave a land nor be driven out by his people. He is renowned for earning and providing sustenance to those who are unable to earn for themselves, he upholds the rights of kinship, he carries the burdens of others (i.e. settling their debts and assisting them), he shows hospitality to his guests and he aids and assists the people at the time of natural disasters and calamities.” The Quraysh did not oppose the security that Ibnud Daghina had granted to Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu). Instead, they said to him, “Tell Abu Bakr that he should worship his Rabb within the confines of his home, perform his salaah there and recite as much of the Qur'aan he wishes. However, he should not annoy and frustrate us by practicing his Deen in public as we fear that he would then mislead our women and children." Ibnud Daghina agreed to the conditions and conveyed this message to Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu).

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) continued in this way worshipping Allah Ta’aala in seclusion (within the confines of his home). He did not perform salaah in public nor did he recite the Qur'aan at any place other than his own home. It then occurred to him that he should construct a Masjid in the courtyard of his house to perform salaah and recite the Qur'aan. The women and children of the disbelievers were greatly attracted to the recitation of Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu); they would crowd around his house to observe him perform salaah and recite the Qur’aan Majeed. Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) was a man who wept uncontrollably whenever he recited the Qur'aan. Viewing this condition, the leaders of the Quraysh became greatly worried and concerned and thus they sent for Ibnud Daghina.

When Ibnud Daghina met them, they said to him, “We sanctioned the protection that you granted to Abu Bakr on condition that he worships his Rabb within the confines of his home. He has now violated the agreement by building a Masjid in the courtyard of his house, thereby openly performing salaah and reciting the Qur’aan. We fear that he should not mislead our women and children. With immediate effect, stop him from publicly worshipping his Creator. If he is prepared to abide by the agreement and worship his Rabb in seclusion, he may do so. However, if he persists upon doing so publicly, inform him that you withdraw your security and protection. We are only doing this because (we honour your security and) we do not wish to oppose you and break your security. However, under no circumstances are we prepared to allow Abu Bakr to publicly advocate his Deen.”

Ibnud Daghina then immediately proceeded to Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) and addressed him saying, “O Abu Bakr, you are well aware that the security I afforded you was subject to the conditions laid down by the Quraysh. You either abide by the agreement, (and confine your worship to within your home), or else I will be absolved of the amnesty and security I have granted you. Certainly it does not please me to hear the Arabs saying that I have breached the agreement and went against my word.” Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) spontaneously replied, “I return to you your security and I am satisfied with the divine security of Allah Ta’aala.” [1]

Note: The words with which Ibnud Daghina praised Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) at the time he was leaving Makkah Mukarramah, corresponds to the description of Hadhrat Khadeeja (Radhiallahu Anha) at the time she comforted and consoled Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) after being blessed with nubuwwat. Rasulullah (Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam) feared that he would not be able to fulfil the task that he had been commissioned with. It was then that she consoled him, saying that Allah Ta’ala will divinely support you in the mission of Nubuwwat, for indeed you are renowned for earning and providing sustenance to those who are unable to earn for themselves, you uphold the rights of kinship, you carry the burdens of others (i.e. settling their debts and assisting them), you show hospitality to your guests and you aid and assist the people at the time of natural disasters and calamities.

Spending for the sake of Allah Ta’ala https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2972 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2972#respond Sat, 10 Nov 2012 14:10:51 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2972

Before migrating to Madinah Munawwarah, Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) set free seven slaves for the sake of Allah Ta’aala. On one occasion, his father Abu Quhaafa met him and asked: “Why are you only freeing those slaves that are weak (as you are aware that they cannot help you at the time of need)? If instead you free strong and capable slaves, it will be to your benefit; they will assist you in your works and protect you against your enemies. Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) replied: “O my beloved father! I have not freed these slaves for my personal need or benefit, instead I have freed them only for the sake of Allah Ta'aala. Hence, I only wish for recompense and reward from Allah Ta’aala.”  Upon this, Allah Ta’aala revealed the verses:

And the one who fears Allah Ta’aala (Abu Bakr (Radhiallahu Anhu), and spends his wealth (in charity) in order to gain self-purification will be saved from it (Jahannum). There is no favour (that he does to anyone) in exchange of which he expects a recompense (e.g. freeing Hadhrat Bilaal (Radhiallahu Anhu)) except (he does whatever he does) with the intention of earning the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High. And surely he will soon be happy (with the rewards that his Lord will bless him).  [1]

The Freeing of Hadhrat Bilaal (Radhiallahu Anhu) https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2969 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2969#respond Sat, 10 Nov 2012 14:07:03 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2969

Hadhrat Bilaal (Radhiallahu Anhu) was an Abyssinian slave who entered into the fold of Islam in the early days of Islam. He belonged to a woman of the Banu Jumah tribe. Umayyah bin Khalaf , the worst enemy of Islam, was her agent. He would make him lie down on the burning sand at midday and would place a heavy stone on his chest, so that he could not even move a limb. He would then say to him: “Renounce Islam or swelter and die.”

Even under these extreme afflictions, Hadhrat Bilal (Radhiallahu Anhu) would exclaim: “Ahad Ahad!” (There is only one Allah (who is my creator and worthy of worship)).

He used to be severely beaten and lashed at night. Despite the wounds and injuries sustained through the lashing, the following day the Mushrikeen would lay him down again on the burning ground in the scorching heat of Makkah Mukarramah so that he would renounce Islam. They would also drag Hadhrat Bilaal (Radhiallahu Anhu) through the two mountains of Makkah Mukarramah with a rope around his neck, torturing him in this manner. All this was done only in order that he forsake Islam or die a lingering, abject death in the process. The torturers (Abu Jahl, Umayyah and others) would take turns in punishing him. They would vie with one another to see who could inflict the most painful punishment on him. Despite the severe persecution and hardships, Hadhrat Bilaal (Radhiallahu Anhu) remained steadfast and would continuously say, “Ahad! Ahad!” (There is only one Allah (who is my creator and worthy of worship)).

One day Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) passed by the Mushrikeen while they were meting out punishment upon Hadhrat Bilaal (Radhiallahu Anhu). Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) could not bear it any longer to see Hadhrat Bilaal (Radhiallahu Anhu) in such pain and misery. He addressed Umayyah bin Khalaf (one of the leaders of Makkah) saying: “O Umayyah, do you not fear Allah Ta’aala for what you are doing to this weak slave? Until when will you continue torturing him and persecuting him so severely?”

Umayyah replied, “It is you people who have landed him into this misery (i.e. through introducing a new religion in our land and turning away from the religion of our forefathers). Hence, you may rescue him from this torment if you so wish.” Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) while negotiating the price with Umayyah, offered to exchange the slave he had in place of Hadhrat Bilaal (Radhiallahu Anhu) as well as pay nine ooqiya of silver (three hundred and sixty Dirhams). Thus he said to Umayyah, “I have an Abyssinian slave who is stronger than him and a follower of your religion. If you so wish I am willing to exchange him for Hadhrat Bilaal (Radhiallahu Anhu).” Umayyah agreed to the exchange. Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu), upon purchasing Hadhrat Bilaal (Radhiallahu Anhu), immediately freed him for the sake of Allah Ta’aala.

Once the deal was done, Umayyah tauntingly mentioned to Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu): “By the qasm of Laat and Uzza, (since he is not worth anything in my sight) if you offered even one ooqiya to purchase him, I would have sold him to you. Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) retorted: “I take a qasm on Allah Ta’aala, if I was forced to pay one hundred ooqiya (four thousand Dirhams) to purchase him (since he is worth so much in the sight of Allah Ta’aala), I would have accepted the offer and purchased him.” [1]

Aiding Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) in difficulty https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2868 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2868#respond Sat, 03 Nov 2012 14:13:12 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2868

On one occasion, whilst Rasulullah  (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) was engaged in performing salaah by the Ka’bah, one of the leaders of the Quraish Uqbah bin Abi Mu’ait approached him with the sinister intention of persecuting him. Uqbah then removed his shawl and began ruthlessly strangling Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). No sooner did Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) learn about this, he rushed to the scene to rescue Rasulullah (Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam). He immediately grabbed Uqbah by his shoulder and pushed him away from Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq then reproachingly addressed Uqbah in the following words:

أَتَقْتُلُونَ رَجُلًا أَن يَقُولَ رَبِّيَ اللَّـهُ وَقَدْ جَاءَكُم بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ مِن رَّبِّكُمْ

Do you intend killing a man on the mere basis that he proclaims that Allah Ta’aala is my creator; whilst he has brought to you clear signs from your Lord? [1]

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu)’s sufferings for Islam. https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2864 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2864#respond Sat, 03 Nov 2012 14:09:25 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2864

In the initial stages of Islam, those who embraced Islam had to keep their faith secret as far as possible.  As the Muslims were being constantly persecuted by the Quraysh, even Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) advised all new Muslims to practise Islam secretly, so that they might not have to suffer at the hands of the Quraysh.

When, however, the number of Muslims reached 39, Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) made a suggestion for the open preaching and practicing of Islam.  Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) would not agree, but, when Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallaho Anhu) insisted, he gave his consent and so all of them went to the Haram to propagate the deen of Islam. Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallaho Anhu) began to speak, and the Khutbah (sermon) given by him was the first ever delivered in the annals of Islam. Hadhrat Hamzah (Radhiallahu Anhu), the uncle of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and the Chief of Martyrs embraced Islam on that very day, while Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) came into Islam on the third day of this address. No sooner did Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) start speaking than the idolaters and disbelievers from amongst the Quraysh fell upon the Muslims from all sides. Despite the fact that he was considered to be the noblest and most respectable of all the people in Makkah Mukarramah, Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) was beaten to such an extent that his nose, ears and entire face were besmeared  with  blood. He was kicked, thrashed with shoes, trampled under feet and handled most roughly and savagely. He became unconscious and half-dead; none hoped that he would ever survive this brutal onslaught.

Banu Taim, the people of his clan, came and carried him to his house. They also announced in the Haram that if Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) succumbed to his injuries, they would in retaliation take the life of Utbah bin Rabee'ah, who had taken the most active part in the attack. Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) remained unconscious the entire day. The people around him shouted his name again and again to gauge if he was in his senses, but he would not speak. Late in the evening however, he opened his eyes and showed signs of consciousness. As soon as he was able to speak, he enquired:

“How is Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam)?”

The people were most disappointed with him and they said: “How is it that despite all this calamity and after virtually remaining in the jaws of death all day long on account of Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi  Wasallam), as soon  as  he has come back to consciousness, he has nothing else to talk about , but Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi  Wasallam) himself."

They left Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallaho Anhu), much disgusted at his devotion for Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi  Wasallam), while they were satisfied that he was out of danger. They advised Umme Khair, his mother, to give him something to eat.  But least minding his food, Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallaho Anhu) would incessantly and impatiently ask his mother the same question again and again, i.e. “How is Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)?”

On her showing ignorance about the welfare of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallaho Anhu) entreated her to go to Hadhrat Umme Jamil (Hadhrat Umar's sister) and find out from her the latest news about the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). The mother could not refuse the request of her son in this pitiable condition, and hurried to Umme Jamil's (Radhiallahu Anha) house to enquire about the welfare of Rasulullah (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam). Like other Muslims of that time, Hadhrat Umme Jamil (Radhiallahu Anha) was also keeping her faith secret. She therefore concealed her knowledge about the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), saying: “Who is Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and who is Abu Bakr (Radhiallahu Anhu)? Why should I know anything about them?  I am however sorry to learn about the condition of your son; if you like, I can go with you to see him." Umme Khair agreed and they both came to Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu). On seeing Abu Bakr (Radhiallaho Anhu)  in that miserable condition, Umme Jamil (Radhiallahu Anha) could not control herself and began to cry, saying: “Woe to the ruffians for what they have done to a man like Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu). May Allah Ta’ala punish them for their misconduct."

Regardless of what Umme Jamil (Radhiallahu Anha) said, Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) had the same words on his lips viz: “How is Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)?” Umme Jamil (Radhiallahu Anha) (pointing towards Umme Khair) said:  “Is it safe to say anything in her presence?”

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu): “Do not worry about her. Tell me, how is Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)?”

Hadhrat Umme Jamil (Radhiyallahu Anha):  “He is quite well.”

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu):  “Where is he at this moment?”

Hadhrat Umme Jamil (Radhiyallahu Anha):  “He is at Arqam's place.”

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu):  “By Allah! I will not eat anything until I have looked at him.”

Now, his mother was very anxious to feed him. She knew that when he had sworn by Allah he would not break his oath and, therefore, would not eat under any circumstance. She therefore agreed to take him to Arqam's place. She had to wait till the street was least-frequented by the people and she was able to take him to that place undetected by Quraysh. When they both reached Arqam's place, Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallaho Anhu) saw Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam) and clung to him weeping profusely. Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam) also began to cry, and all the Muslims who were present there also began to weep bitterly over the condition of Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu). Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) then introduced his mother Umme Khair to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi wasallam), saying: “She is my mother, 0 Nabi of Allah! Pray for her and encourage her to accept Islam.” Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) first prayed for her and then preached to her.  She accepted Islam there and then.

Both the parents of Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu), his father Abu Quhaafa and his mother Umme Khair, had accepted Islam. Umme Khair accepted Islam in the beginning periods of Islam, while Abu Quhaafa accepted Islam during the period of the conquest of Makkah Mukarramah. Abu Quhaafa lived to see the khilaafat of Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu), and passed away approximately six months after him Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu). [1]

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu)-Accepting Islam https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2805 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2805#respond Sat, 13 Oct 2012 14:40:10 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2805

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu)’s spontaneous response to the invitation of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)

Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) once said:

ما دعوت أحدا إلى الإسلام إلا كانت فيه عنده كبوة ونظر وتردد إلا ما كان من أبي بكر بن أبي قحافة ما عتم عنه حين ذكرته له وما تردد فيه

(At the beginning of Islam) Whoever I invited to Islam expressed some reservation and doubt, with the exception of Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu). When I invited him to Islam he readily embraced it, without an iota of doubt and hesitation.

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) was the first adult male to embrace Islam. Thereafter, he became the cause for many Sahaabah entering into the fold of Islam. From amongst them were five Sahaabah from the Ashara Mubash-shara viz. Hadhrat Uthmaan ibn Affaan, Hadhrat Zubair ibnul Awwaam, Hadhrat Abdur Rahmaan ibn Auf, Hadhrat Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqaas and Hadhrat Talha ibn Ubaidillah (Radhiallahu Anhum). [1]

Incident regarding his accepting Islam

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) relates: Prior to the advent of Islam, I set out on a journey to Yemen. Along the journey, I came across an old, learned Sheikh from the tribe of Azd. He possessed great knowledge regarding the previous scriptures, and was quite familiar in regard to the ways and mannerisms of the various tribes of people.

Upon seeing me, the following dialogue ensued between us:

The learned Sheikh: “From your appearance I make out that you are from the residents of the Haram.”

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq: “Yes, I am from the people of the Haram.”

The learned Sheikh: “It seems like you are from the Quraish tribe.”

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq: “Yes, I am from the Quraish.”

The learned Sheikh: “It seems like you belong to the Banu Taim clan (i.e. from the descendants of Taim ibn Murrah).”

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq: “Yes, I am from the progeny of Taim ibn Murrah. I am Abdullah ibn Uthmaan , from the children of Ka’b ibn Sa’d ibn Taim ibn Murrah.”

The learned Sheikh: “All the signs are evidently witnessed in you, however there is one more sign that has not yet been proven.”

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq: “What is the last sign that you are searching for?”

The learned Sheikh: “Expose your stomach to me.”

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq: “Not until you explain to me the reasons for you enquiring to see it.”

The learned Sheikh: “I have found recorded in the authentic scriptures that soon a Nabi will be sent in the world and he will hail from the Haram. He will be supported in his mission by a youngster and a middle-aged man. As for the youngster, he will be big built, strong and powerful, and as for the middle-aged man then he will be fair in complexion and thin in body, on his stomach there will be some warts, and on his left thigh there will be a mark. What harm will be caused if you expose to me what I have requested, for I am convinced that all the signs are existent within you with the exception of one (which is hidden from me)?”

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) then exposed his stomach, and the learned Sheikh saw some warts above his navel. He then said: “I take an oath by the Lord of the Ka’bah, you are definitely the same person. I wish to forewarn you regarding some matter, against which you should exercise extreme caution.” Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) then asked: “And what is it you wish to caution me about?”

The learned Sheikh: “Abstain from deviating from the straight path, and hold firm to the perfect, moderate path. Fear Allah Ta’aala regarding the favour which he has bestowed upon you and blessed you with.”

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) then says: Upon completing my work in Yemen, thereafter I returned to the learned sheikh to bid him farewell. He asked me: “Do you wish to hear some poetry which I have composed in praise of the final messenger?" I agreed and he began reciting a few couplets.

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) further says: I then set out on my journey returning to Makkah Mukarramah. It was during my journey that prophethood was conferred upon Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Upon my return the leaders of the Quraish viz. Uqbah ibn Abi Mu’ait, Shaibah, Rabee’ah, Abu Jahl, Abul Bakhtari and others approached me in a manner as though some great event had occurred. So I asked them: “What is the matter? Have you been afflicted by some calamity? Has something strange occurred?” They replied: “The most shocking of events has occurred; the orphan of Abu Taalib is claiming to be a nabi. Had it not been for you (i.e. your position being so exalted that we felt it appropriate to consult you before taking a decision), we would have certainly not spared him. Since you have now arrived from your journey, you are sufficient in guiding us and explaining to us what to do.” Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) gently brushed them off and enquired regarding the whereabouts of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) was informed that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) is in the home of Hadhrat Khadeeja (Radhiallahu Anha).

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) then says: I knocked on the door and Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) came out. I then asked: “O Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), I have learnt that you have forsaken the ways of your people, and abandoned the religion of your forefathers?” Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied: “O Abu Bakr (Siddeeq)! I am the messenger of Allah Ta’aala to you and to the entire humanity, so bring Imaan in Allah Ta’aala.” I then asked: “What is your proof of your being appointed as the messenger of Allah Ta’aala?” Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied: “The learned Sheikh whom you met in Yemen.” I replied: “There were many learned Sheikhs that I had met in Yemen.” Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) then said: “The learned Sheikh who recited poetry regarding myself, the final messenger.” I then asked: “Who has informed you regarding this, O my beloved friend?” Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied: “The greatest of angels (Hadhrat Jibraeel (Alaihi Salaam)), who used to visit the Messengers who came before me.” I then said: “Extend your hand to me (so that I may embrace Islam upon your hands), for indeed I testify that there is none worthy of worship besides Allah Ta’aala, and that you are His final messenger.”

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) further mentions: I left the gathering of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), and there was no one in the valley of Makkah Mukarramah happier with my embracing Islam than Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).[2]
