Sahaabah – Ihyaaud Deen https://ihyaauddeen.co.za An Effort to Revive Deen in Totality Mon, 26 Feb 2024 12:38:12 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.4.2 The First Blood Shed for the Cause of Islam https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21600 Mon, 26 Feb 2024 12:38:12 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21600

Muhammed bin Ishaaq (rahimahullah) narrates:

In the beginning of Islam, the Sahaabah of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would perform salaah in secret. They used to go to the valleys of Makkah Mukarramah to perform salaah so that their Salaah remain hidden from the disbelievers (and so that they be saved from the persecution of the disbelievers).

Once, while Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was present with a group of Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) performing salaah in one of the valleys of Makkah Mukarramah, a group of disbelievers caught sight of them. The disbelievers then began to condemn them and criticize their Deen, untill a fight broke out between the two groups (i.e. the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) and the disbelievers). During this fight, Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) inflicted a severe head wound to one of the disbelievers by striking his skull with the jaw bone of a camel. This was the first fight (which took place from the beginning of Islam wherein the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) caused physical injury to the kuffaar and it was the fight fight) in which blood was shed for the cause of Islam. Hazrat ‘Aamir (rahimahullah), the son of Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), narrates the following:

I once said to my father, “O my beloved father! I notice that you show extra love and respect to the Ansaar compared to other people.”

Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) asked me, “O my son! Are you unhappy with this?” I replied, “No! I am not unhappy. However, I am greatly pleased over the special way you treat them (Hence, I wish to know the reason for the special treatment you afford them).”

Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then said, “(The reason for me showing extra love and respect to them is that) I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) mention, ‘Only a true believer will have love for the Ansaar, and only a hypocrite will harbor enmity for the Ansaar.”

The Prophecy of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) in regard to Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) Conquering Qaadisiyyah https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21556 Mon, 12 Feb 2024 14:58:09 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21556

On the occasion of Hajjatul Wadaa’, Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) had fallen ill in Makkah Mukarramah and he feared that he would pass away. When Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) came to visit him, he began to weep. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked him, “Why are you weeping?” Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) replied, “I fear that I will pass away in the land from which I had performed Hijrah, and through passing away here, the reward of my hijrah will be lost.”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then made the following du‘aa thrice for Hazrat Sa’d’s (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) recovery, “O Allah! Cure Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)!”

Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) thereafter asked Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), “O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! I have abundant wealth, and I only have a daughter who is well-off. Can I make a wasiyyat (bequest) for all my wealth (to be given in charity after my demise)?” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “No.”

Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then asked, “Can I bequest for two-thirds of my wealth (to be given in charity after my demise)?” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “No.”

Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then asked if he could bequest for half of his wealth to be given in charity after his demise, to which Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied in the negative.

Finally, Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) asked Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) if he could bequest for one-third of his wealth to be given in charity after his demise. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “(Yes, you may bequeath) one-third, but bequeathing one-third is a lot (to bequeath from your right). Indeed, all the charity that you give from your wealth is charity, whatever you spend on your dependants is charity, whatever your wife uses from your wealth is charity, and for you to leave your family (after your demise) in prosperity is better than for you to leave them (in a condition of poverty) stretching their hands before people (begging due to poverty).”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) thereafter addressed Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) saying, “You will certainly remain alive, until many people will benefit through you, and many others will be harmed through you.” (Saheeh Muslim #1628)

Some Muhadditheen say that this prophecy of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was in reference to Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) conquering the land of Qaadisiyyah through which Muslims benefited and harm was caused to the kuffaar.

Hazrat Sa’d’s (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) steadfastness on Imaan https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21524 Mon, 05 Feb 2024 13:37:42 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21524

Abu ‘Uthmaan (rahimahullah) narrates that Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said:

The following verse of the Qur’aan Majeed was revealed in regard to me:

وَ وَصَّیۡنَا الۡاِنۡسَانَ بِوَالِدَیۡہِ حُسۡنًا ؕ وَاِنۡ جَاہَدٰکَ لِتُشۡرِکَ بِیۡ مَا لَیۡسَ لَکَ بِہٖ عِلۡمٌ فَلَا تُطِعۡہُمَا ؕ

We have enjoined upon man kindness to parents. And if they (your disbelieving parents) force you to join partners with Me (in My worship) that of which you do not have knowledge, then do not obey them.

I was a very obedient child towards my mother. However, when I accepted Islam, she addressed me saying, “O Sa’d! What is this new religion which you have innovated? I command you to forsake this religion or else I will never speak to you nor will I eat or drink anything until I eventually die. Then you will have to bear the blame of my death as people will call you ‘the person who killed his own mother’.” I replied, “O my mother! Do not conduct in this way because I am not prepared to leave this religion of mine for anything in the world!”

My mother then remained hungry for three days and nights until she became extremely weak. When I saw her in this condition, I said to her, “O my mother! I wish to inform you that, by Allah, if you had a hundred lives and you were to lose them all, one by one, on account of trying to persuade me to forsake Islam, I would never leave my religion. Therefore, if you wish, you may eat and if you wish, you may remain hungry.” When the mother of Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) saw his unflinching determination and devotion to Islam, she realized that he would never renounce Islam for anything and thus she broke her oath and began to eat.  (Siyar A’laam min Nubalaa vol.3 pg. 69, Saheeh Muslim #1748)

Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) Guarding Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21496 Mon, 29 Jan 2024 14:18:16 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21496

Hazrat ‘Aa’ishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) narrates:

After migrating to Madinah Munawwarah, on one occasion, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) could not fall asleep during the night (out of fear that the enemy would attack him). It was then that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “If only there was a pious person to guard me tonight.” While we were in that condition, we heard the sound of weapons. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked, “Who is there?” The person replied, “Sa’d bin Abi Waqqaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked him, “What has brought you here?” Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) replied, “I feared for your life, O Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), and so I have come to guard you.” Hearing this, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) made du‘aa for him and thereafter fell asleep. (Sunan Tirmizi #3756, Fat-hul Baari 6/96)

In another narration, Hazrat ‘Aa’ishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) mentioned that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would be guarded by the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) until the following verse of the Qur’aan Majeed was revealed:

وَ اللّٰہُ یَعۡصِمُکَ مِنَ النَّاسِ ؕ

And Allah Ta‘ala will protect you from the (harm of the) people

When this verse of the Qur’aan Majeed was revealed, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) mentioned to the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum), “O people! Depart, as Allah Ta‘ala has granted me His divine protection.” (Sunan Tirmizi #3046)

The Special Du‘aa of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21462 Mon, 22 Jan 2024 14:08:56 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21462

Hazrat ‘Aa’ishah bint Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anha), the daughter of Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), narrates the following from her father, Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu):

During the Battle of Uhud, (when the enemy had attacked from the rear and many Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) were killed on the battlefield,) the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) could not find Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and were moving about in confusion. At that time, I moved aside and said to myself, “I will continue to fight the kuffaar. In the process of fighting, I will either gain martyrdom or Allah Ta‘ala will allow me to remain alive. If I survive this battle, then surely, I will get to meet Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).”

In this state, I suddenly saw a man covering his face due to which I could not recognize him. The disbelievers advanced towards him until I said to myself, “They have pursued him until they have finally reached him!” At that moment, the man filled his hand with pebbles and flung them into the faces of the disbelievers, causing them to turn on their heels and retreat until they reached the mountain. The man repeated this action multiple times (when the disbelievers attempted to attack him), and I did not know who he was (as I could not see his face).

Between myself and this man was Hazrat Miqdaad bin Aswad (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). I had just decided to ask Hazrat Miqdaad (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) who this great man was when Hazrat Miqdaad (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said to me, “O Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)! This is Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) who is calling you!” I asked Hazrat Miqdaad (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), “Where is Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)?” In response, Hazrat Miqdaad (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) gestured towards the very same man.

Realizing that this man was none other than the beloved Rasul of Allah Ta‘ala (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), I immediately stood in my place, and out of extreme happiness, I became totally oblivious of my wounds. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said to me, “O Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)! Where have you been all this while?” I responded saying, “I was standing at a distance from you, from where I could see you (until the enemy attacked and I lost you).”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then seated me before him and I began to fire arrows towards the kuffaar while saying, “O Allah! This is your arrow, so make it strike your enemy!” While I was firing the arrows, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was making du‘aa for me saying, “O Allah! Answer the du‘aa of Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)! O Allah! Make the arrows of Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) strike the target!” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then said to me, “Continue to fire arrows, O Sa’d! May my father and mother be sacrificed for you!” I did not fire a single arrow except that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) continued to make dua to Allah Ta‘ala  to make my arrow strike its target and to answer my dua when I supplicate to him.

Finally, when all the arrows in my quiver were finished, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) spread out the arrows of his quiver and handed me an arrow with feathers on it to shoot in the path of Allah Ta‘ala.

Imaam Zuhri (rahimahullah) has mentioned that Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) fired 1000 arrows during the Battle of Uhud.

Hazrat Sa’d’s (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) Dream Before Accepting Islam https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21442 Mon, 15 Jan 2024 14:43:17 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21442

Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) narrates:

Prior to accepting Islam, I had a dream in which I saw that I was in absolute darkness and was unable to see anything. Suddenly, a moon appeared which began to illuminate the night. I then followed the light until I reached the moon. In the dream, I saw certain people who had preceded me in reaching the moon. I saw Zaid bin Haarithah, ‘Ali bin Abi Taalib and Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) present by the moon. I asked them, “When did you people arrive here (by the moon)?” They replied, “We have arrived here at this very moment.”

When I awoke from the dream, I learnt that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was declaring nubuwwah and he was secretly inviting to Islam. I thus went to him and met him in the valleys of Makkah Mukarramah. When I reached there, I found that he had just completed performing some Salaah. I then embraced Islam upon his hands. Besides these Sahaabah (Zaid bin Haarithah, ‘Ali bin Abi Taalib and Abu Bakr radhiyallahu ‘anhum), no one else had embraced Islam before me. (Usdul Ghaabah vol. 2 pg. 309)

Note:

  1. The darkness in the dream of Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu anhu) referred to the darkness of kufr. The moon with its light referred to Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) who was sent with the light of Islam to remove darkness from the world.
  2. Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu anhu) mentioned that apart from Hazrat Zaid bin Haarithah, Hazrat ‘Ali bin Abi Taalib and Hazrat Abu Bakr radhiyallahu ‘anhum, no one else had embraced Islam before him. However, this was according to his knowledge. Otherwise, in other narrations, it is established that there were a few other Sahaabah who had embraced Islam before him.”

Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) Being Sent by Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) to Level the Graves, Destroy Idols and Erase Pictures https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21427 Mon, 08 Jan 2024 13:43:58 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21427

Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that on one occasion, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) attended the janaazah of a certain Sahaabi. He thereafter addressed the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) who were present and said, “Who among you will go back to Madinah Munawwarah, and wherever he sees any idol or statue, he will break it, and wherever he sees any grave which is raised (high above the ground, or has a structure built on it), he will level it (to the correct height), and wherever he sees any picture (of animate objects), then he will immediately destroy it?”

Hearing this, a certain Sahaabi volunteered saying, “I will do so, O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)!” However, before entering the city, he was overcome by fear of his people, and hence he returned to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and expressed his inability to fulfil such a task. Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was present, and he said to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), “I will go, O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)!”

Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then went to Madinah Munawwarah and completed the mission he was tasked with. On returning, he said to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), “O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! I did not leave, in the city, any idol or statue, except that I broke it, nor any grave (that was raised above the correct height), except that I levelled it (to the correct height), nor any picture (of animate objects), except that I destroyed it.”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) thereafter said, “The one who returns to doing any of these things (i.e. raising the graves high above the correct height or building structures over them, or making pictures of animate objects), then he has shown complete disregard and ingratitude to that which has been revealed to Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) (i.e. he has shown ingratitude to the laws of deen which were revealed to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)).” (Musnad Ahmed #657)

From this incident, we see the outstanding bravery and unique courage of Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), together with his eagerness to always fulfil the blessed command of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).

The Firm Trust of Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) in the Promise of Allah Ta‘ala https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21403 Mon, 01 Jan 2024 13:11:03 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21403

It is reported that once, a beggar came to Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and asked for something. Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) turned to one of his two sons, either Hazrat Hasan or Hazrat Husain (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma), and said to him, “Go to your mother and tell her that I said, ‘I had kept six dirhams by you, so give me one dirham from the six (so that I may give it to the beggar).’”

The son went to his mother, Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), and thereafter returned with the following message. He said to his father, “My mother mentioned that you had kept the six dirhams by her for purchasing flour.” Hearing this, Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said, “A servant’s imaan will not be true and perfect until he has more reliance on that which is in the hand of Allah Ta‘ala compared to what a servant possesses (i.e. a servant should place his reliance upon Allah Ta‘ala and His promises that by spending in charity, he will be blessed with barakah for the good deed and he should not hold back his wealth out of fear of poverty).”

Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then said to his son, “Go to your mother, and tell her to give me all the six dirhams (so that I may give it to the beggar).” He thus went to his mother and then returned with the six dirhams which Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) handed over to the beggar.

Not long thereafter, a man passed by Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) with a camel which he was selling. Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) asked him, “How much are you selling the camel for?” The man replied, “I am selling it for one hundred and forty dirhams.” Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then purchased the camel from him. After purchasing the camel, Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said, “Tie the camel here, and we will pay you later.” The man thus tied the camel and departed.

Thereafter, another man passed by, and on seeing the camel, he asked, “Who does this camel belong to?” Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) replied, “It belongs to me.” The man asked, “Are you selling it?” When Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) replied that he was selling it, the man asked, “How much are you selling it for?” Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) responded, “I am selling it for two hundred dirhams.” The man was satisfied with the price and thus accepted the offer and concluded the sale saying, “I have bought it from you.” He then handed the two hundred dirhams to Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), took his camel and departed.

Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then went to the man who had sold him the camel and paid him the one hundred and forty dirhams which he owed him. Thereafter, he returned home to his respected wife, Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), with the sixty dirhams that he had made as profit (and gave it to her).

When Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) saw the sixty dirhams, she asked him, “What is this? Where did this money come from?” Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) replied, “This is what Allah Ta‘ala has promised us, through the following words revealed upon the blessed tongue of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).”

Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then recited the following verse of the Qur’aan Majeed:

مَنۡ جَآءَ بِالۡحَسَنَۃِ فَلَہٗ عَشۡرُ اَمۡثَالِہَا

The one who brings a good deed, he will receive ten times the reward (for the deed he had done) (Surah An’aam v. 160)

In other words, Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) explained to Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) that when he spent six dirhams in sadaqah, Allah Ta‘ala blessed him with a reward ten times more then what he had spent, and hence he now had sixty dirhams in place of the six dirhams which he gave to the beggar.

The Justice of Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21379 Mon, 25 Dec 2023 13:12:57 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21379

‘Ali bin Rabee‘ah reports that on one occasion, Hazrat Ja’dah bin Hubairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) came to Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and said, “O Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen! We find that two people come to you (with their dispute). One of the two is such that you are more beloved to him than even his own family and his wealth, whereas the other person is such that if he was able to slaughter you, then he would do so (out of his enmity for you). Yet, despite this, you pass judgment in favor of the one who hates you, against the one who loves you!”

Hearing this, Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) slightly struck the chest of Hazrat Ja’dah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) with his hand (out of affection and in order to draw his attention to what he was about to mention to him) and then said to him, “If judgment was based on the relationship I have with people, then I could have decided in favor of whomsoever I please. However, judgment is based on the command of Allah Ta‘ala (and in favor of the one who is upon haq. Since the person who hates me is on the haq, I will have to pass judgment in his favor).”

Rasulullah’s (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) Deep Love for Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21352 Mon, 18 Dec 2023 13:20:42 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21352

Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports:

On one occasion, I had fallen ill. While I was ill, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) came to visit me. When Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) entered my home, I was lying down. Seeing me in this state, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) came close to my side and then took off the shawl he was wearing and then covered me with it. Thereafter, on seeing my weakness, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) stood up, went to the musjid and performed some nafl salaah. After performing salaah, he beseeched Allah Ta‘ala to bless me with shifaa.

Therafter, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) came to me, lifted his shawl from me and addressed me saying, “Stand up, O the son of Abu Taalib, for you have been cured!” I thus stood up, and found myself to be completely cured. I found myself in such a state that there was no sign of the illness or weakness left in my body.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then said, “Whenever I made du‘aa to Allah Ta‘ala, He accepted my du‘aa and granted me what I had asked for. (On this occasion,) whatever I asked for myself, I also asked for you, (including your shifaa).” (Fazaa’il-ul-Khulafaa li-Abi Nu’aim #79)

From this incident, we see the great love that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had for Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). Similarly, we understand that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had taught us, through his mubaarak action, that when we fall ill, then we should turn to Allah Ta‘ala in du‘aa, begging Him for shifaa, as everything lies in the control and power of Allah Ta‘ala.

The Bravery of Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) in the Battle of Khaibar https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21324 Mon, 27 Nov 2023 13:29:05 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21324

On the occasion of Khaibar, after Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) handed the flag of Islam to Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu anhu), Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu anhu) led the army of the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu anhu) to the fortress of Qamoos.

As they approached the fortress, a Jewish warrior, by the name of Marhab, came out to challenge them. Marhab was a famous warrior who was renowned for his great strength and bravery. Hence, when Marhab faced Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu anhu) and the Muslims, he began to boast over his bravery and great valour in battle by reciting the following couplets:

قَدْ عَلِمَتْ خَيْبَرُ أَنِّيْ مَرْحَبُ

The people of Khaibar all know well that I am Marhab

شَاكِيْ السِّلَاحِ بَطَلٌ مُجَرَّبُ

I am a warrior who is well-armed and experienced in warfare

إِذَا الْحُرُوْبُ أَقْبَلَتْ تَلَهَّبُ

(I show my true strength and valour) at the time when the fighting commences and the battle flames up and intensifies

Saying these words, he threw a challenge to the Muslims to come forward and duel with him. In response to his challenge, Hazrat ‘Aamir bin Akwa’ (radhiyallahu anhu) came out. Hazrat ‘Aamir (radhiyallahu anhu) faced Marhab and recited the following couplets:

قَدْ عَلِمَتْ خَيْبَرُ أَنِّيْ عَامِرُ

The people of Khaibar all know well that I am Aamir

شَاكِيْ السِّلَاحِ بَطَلٌ مُغَامِرُ

I am a warrior who is fully-armed and I am prepared to plunge headlong into any battle

The duel then commenced with Marhab striking first. He swung his sword towards Hazrat ‘Aamir (radhiyallahu anhu), who blocked the strike with his shield. The strike of Marhab’s sword was so powerful that as it struck the shield, it became embedded in it. Hazrat ‘Aamir (radhiyallahu anhu) seized this opportunity to strike Marhab from beneath his shield. However, he missed Marhab and his sword returned towards him, striking him and causing him a fatal injury.

Thereafter, Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu anhu) came out to challenge Marhab. Marhab again recited the same couplets, to which Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) responded by reciting the following:

أَنَا الَّذِيْ سَمَّتْنِيْ أُمِّيْ حَيْدَرَهْ

I am the one whose mother named him Haydar (the Fierce Lion)

كَلَيْثِ غَابَاتٍ كَرِيْهِ الْمَنْظَرَهْ

Like the fierce-looking lion of the jungle

أُوْفِيْهِمْ بِالصَّاعِ كَيْلَ السَّنْدَرَهْ

When I have to give an exchange, then I give full measure (i.e. my blow is complete and I kill the enemy swiftly and immediately)

In regard to Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) referring to himself as Haydar (the fierce lion), it is reported that when Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was born, his father, Abu Taalib, was gone out on a journey and was not present in Makkah Mukarramah. Hence, his mother named him Haydar (which means lion). She named him haydar after her father, whose name was Asad (which also means lion). When Abu Taalib returned to Makkah Mukarramah from his journey and his wife informed him that she had named their child haydar, he changed the name and called his son by the name ‘Ali. Thereafter, Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) became well known by the name given to him by his father. However, on this occasion, he referred to himself using the name given to him by his mother.

According to one narration, Marhab had a dream the previous night in which he saw that he was being torn apart by a lion. ‘Allaamah Zurqaani (rahimahullah) has mentioned that Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was blessed with knowledge of this through kashf (inspiration, either via a dream or through some other way). It is for this reason that he referred to himself using the name Haydar, which meant fierce lion, in his couplets. Through referring to himself as the fierce lion, Marhab realized that his dream had indicated towards him meeting his end at the sword of Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). This caused him to be overcome by fear and lose courage.

They then commenced the duel, and in a single blow, Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) split the skull of Marhab, the ‘famous’ champion of Khaibar, and ended his life. Allah Ta‘ala then blessed Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) with the conquest of this fortress.

The Fear of Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) for the Hereafter https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21271 Mon, 20 Nov 2023 13:51:02 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21271

Kumail bin Ziyaad (rahimahullah) reports the following:

On one occasion, I accompanied Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) as he came out from the city of Kufah and proceeded towards Jabbaan (the outskirts of the city of Kufah). On coming to Jabbaan, Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) turned towards the cemetery and called out, “O inhabitants of the graves! O people whose bodies have decomposed! O people of loneliness! What is your condition? Our condition (here in the world) is that the estates of the deceased have been wound up and distributed, the children of the deceased have been orphaned and the spouses of the deceased have now remarried! This is our condition, so inform us regarding your condition (in the graves)?”

Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then turned to me and said, “O Kumail! If the inhabitants of these graves were permitted by Allah Ta‘ala to respond to our call, they would say, “The best provision (for the Hereafter) is the provision of taqwa.”

Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then began to weep and said, “O Kumail! The grave, in reality, is a box which contains a person’s actions. It is only at the time of death that one will find out what actions he has sent forward and are lying waiting for him in his grave (i.e. one’s condition in one’s grave – of either punishment or comfort – will be determined by the actions he will take with him to the next world).” (Taareekh Dimashq 50/251)

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) Appointing Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) Over Madinah Munawwarah https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21235 Mon, 13 Nov 2023 13:17:45 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21235

On the occasion of the Battle of Tabook, when Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was departing from Madinah Munawwarah, he appointed Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) to oversee the affairs of Madinah Munawwarah in his absence.

Hence, on the instruction of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) did not go out with the army, but rather he remained in Madinah Munawwarah.

Thereafter, certain people began to spread rumors that the reason why Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had told Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) to remain behind was that he was displeased with him. Hearing this, Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) immediately came to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and mentioned to him what certain people were saying.

According to one narration, Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), “O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! I do not want the Arabs to say regarding me, ‘He has abandoned his cousin (Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)) and remained behind.’”

Furthermore, it was the deep desire of Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) to join the army so that he could strive in the path of Allah Ta‘ala. According to another narration, Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), “O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! Are you leaving me behind with the women and children?”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) consoled him and said to him, “Are you not pleased that your position with me will be like the position of Haroon with Moosa (alaihimas salaam), except that there will be no nabi to come after me?”

In other words, when Nabi Moosa (‘alaihis salaam) went to Mt Toor, he left his brother, Nabi Haroon (‘alaihis salaam), in charge of the people. This indicated the high rank of Nabi Haroon (‘alaihis salaam) and the trust and confidence that Nabi Moosa (‘alaihis salaam) had in him.

In the same way, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) informed Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) that appointing him over the affairs of Madinah Munawwarah in his absence was a sign that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had confidence in him.

When Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) heard this, he immediately said, “I am pleased, I am pleased (with the decision of Allah Ta’ala and His Rasul (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)).” (Saheeh Muslim #2404, Majma’uz Zawaa’id #14642 & 14653 and Fat-hul Baari 7/86)

The Bravery of Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21197 Mon, 06 Nov 2023 13:38:41 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21197

During the Battle of Uhud, Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) displayed extreme courage and bravery in fighting the enemy. Thus, he was personally responsible for killing four of the leaders of the Quraish, among whom was Talhah bin Abi Talhah.

After the battle, he handed his sword to his respected wife, Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), to wash off the blood, and recited the following couplets:

أفاطم هاك السيف غير ذميم     فلست برعديد ولا بلئيم

لعمري لقد أبليت في نصر أحمد     ومرضاة رب بالعباد عليم

O Faatimah! Take this sword, while its wielder is free of any blame, for neither was I a coward (in the battle), nor did I conduct like an evil and wretched person (i.e. I fought in the correct manner and showed full bravery)

By my life, I exerted all my strength in assisting Ahmed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), and earning the pleasure of my Rabb who has complete knowledge regarding His servants.

Hearing this, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) immediately testified to what he had said. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said to him, “O Ali! Certainly, you have fought well, and Aasim bin Thaabit, Sahl bin Hunaif, Haarith bin Simmah and Abu Dujaanah have also fought well.”

The Love of Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) for Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21168 Mon, 30 Oct 2023 14:10:05 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21168

On one occasion, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had no food to eat and was undergoing hunger. When Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) learnt that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was undergoing hunger, his heart was immediately filled with worry and concern. Such was his love for Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) that he could not rest while knowing that the Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was in difficulty and hardship. However, Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) himself did not have any food to share with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).

Hence, Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) left his home to look for some work so that he could earn wealth to purchase food for Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). As Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) went around looking for work, he came to an orchard belonging to a certain Jew. Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) offered to draw out water from the well for the Jew, on the condition that for each bucket of water he draws out, the Jew should pay him one date.

The Jew accepted and Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) drew out seventeen buckets of water from the well. When the time of payment arrived, the Jew offered Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) to take any type of dates he wished from his orchard. Thus, Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) took seventeen dates of the ‘Ajwah variety, and then brought them and presented them to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).

When he presented the dates to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) addressed him by his kunyah (filial title) and asked him, “O Abul Hasan! Where did you get these dates from?” Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) replied, “O Nabi of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! I heard of the hunger that you are undergoing, so I went out seeking some work so that I could acquire some food to present to you!”

Hearing this, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked him, “Did you do this solely out of love for Allah Ta‘ala and His Rasul (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)?” Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) replied, “Yes, O Nabi of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)!”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then said, “There is no slave who possesses true love for Allah Ta‘ala and His Rasul (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), except that he will be tested (at times) with poverty. Hence, the one who possesses true love for Allah Ta‘ala and His Rasul (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) should be prepared to face the test of sabr.”

The Dua of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) for Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) when Sending Him to Yemen https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21117 Mon, 23 Oct 2023 13:34:48 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21117

Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports:

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) sent me as his governor to Yemen. Before departing, I addressed him and said, “O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! You are sending me to people who are older than me. Furthermore, I am a youngster and I do not have any insight in the field of qadhaa (judicial matters).”

Hearing my concern, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) placed his blessed hand on my chest and made dua in the following words:

اللهم ثبت لسانه واهد قلبه

O Allah! Cause his tongue to be firm (in uttering the truth) and guide his heart (towards the haqq)!

Thereafter, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) addressed me and said, “O Ali! When the two disputing parties sit before you, then ensure that you do not issue any verdict or pass any judgment between them until you have heard the case of the second party, just as you heard the case of the first party. If you hold onto this advice of mine, you will understand the situation correctly, and you will know how to decide and pass judgement among them.”

It is reported that on account of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) making this dua for Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and giving him this advice, Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) never faced any difficulty when passing judgment between people.” (Musnad Ahmed #882)

Purchasing Land for the Extension of the Musjid-ul-Haraam https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21046 Mon, 16 Oct 2023 13:48:38 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21046

On one occasion, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) approached a certain person in Makkah Mukarramah and said to him, “O so-and-so! Will you sell your house to me, so that I may extend the area of the musjid around the Ka’bah, and in reward for this good action, I will guarantee you a palace in Jannah (i.e besides the money that you will receive for the house)?”

The man replied, “O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! By Allah, this is the only house I have! If I sell it to you, there will be nothing to shelter my children and I in Makkah Mukarramah.”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) again encouraged the man saying, “Despite what you have mentioned, sell your house to me, so that I may extend the area of the musjid around the Ka’bah, and in reward for this good action, I will guarantee you a palace in Jannah.” The man replied, “By Allah! I do not intend selling my house.”

Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) thereafter learnt of what had transpired. He thus went to the man, who was his friend from the pre-Islamic era, and said, “O so-and-so! I have learned that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) intended buying your house, to extend the area of the musjid around the Ka’bah, and in reward for this good action, he had guaranteed you a palace in Jannah, and you declined this offer.” The man replied, “Yes, I did decline.”

Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then continued to encourage him to sell his house, until eventually he agreed and Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then purchased it from him for 10 000 dinars (gold coins).

Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then proceeded to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and said, “O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! I had come to know that you intended to buy the house of so-and-so, to extend the area of the musjid around the Ka’bah, and you had guaranteed the owner a palace in Jannah. The house now belongs to me, as I have purchased it from the owner, will you accept it from me for free and guarantee me a palace in Jannah?”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied in the affirmative and accepted the house from Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), guaranteeing him a palace in Jannah and making the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) a witness to that. Equipping the Expedition of Tabook https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20998 Mon, 09 Oct 2023 13:49:30 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20998 Hazrat ‘Abdur Rahmaan bin Khabbaab (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) narrates the following:

I was present when Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was encouraging the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) to equip the army and contribute towards the expedition of Tabook. On that occasion, Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) stood and said, “O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! I undertake to contribute one hundred camels with their complete saddlery (saddle blankets and saddles) in the path of Allah.”

Thereafter, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) encouraged the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) once again to equip the army for the expedition of Tabook. Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) again stood and said, “O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! I undertake to contribute another two hundred camels with their complete saddlery (saddle blankets and saddles) in the path of Allah.”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then encouraged the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) to contribute to the expedition for a third time. Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) again stood and said, “O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! I undertake to contribute another three hundred camels with their complete saddlery (saddle blankets and saddles) in the path of Allah (thus bringing his total contribution of camels to six hundred camels).”

On that occasion, I saw Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) descend from the mimbar while he was extremely pleased saying, “Uthmaan will not have to do any other virtuous deed after this deed (to purchase his Jannah), Uthmaan will not have to do any other virtuous deed after this deed.” (Sunan Tirmizi #3700)

Concern of Accountability in the Hereafter https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20987 Mon, 02 Oct 2023 15:17:33 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20987

On one occasion, Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) entered his animal pen and found his slave feeding fodder to a camel. On inspecting the fodder, Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was not pleased with the manner in which the slave had prepared it and thus twisted his ear. After a little while, taking stock of his actions, Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) became concerned and feared that he should not be taken to task for this action in the Hereafter.

Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) thus addressed the slave saying, “Take retribution from me,” but the slave refused to do so. Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) continued to insist, until the slave agreed and began to twist his ear. Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then instructed him, “Twist it harder!” until he was satisfied that the slave had inflicted on him the same pain that he had inflicted on the slave.

Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then exclaimed, “How wonderful is the retribution which is taken in this world, before it can be claimed in the next world!”

(Al-Ahwaal libni Abid Dunya #264, Akhbaar-ul-Madinah #1777)

Note: Disciplining the slave was permissible for Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). However, he asked the slave to take retribution from him as he feared that he could have overstepped the mark in disciplining the slave. This conduct of Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was, in actual fact, a reflection of the fear of Allah Ta‘ala within him, and the concern of accountability in the Hereafter. May Allah Ta‘ala bless us with the taufeeq of being concerned about our spiritual reformation and the accountability of the Hereafter.

Ten special virtues of Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20973 Mon, 25 Sep 2023 13:44:03 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20973

Hazrat Abu Thowr (rahimahullah) narrates that he once came to Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and heard him mention the following at the time when wrong criticism was being levelled against him. He said:

There are ten good deeds which I have secured by Allah Ta’ala and for each deed I hope to receive reward in the Hereafter;

1) I was the fourth person to accept Islam.

2) I never spoke a lie throughout my life.

3) I never placed my right hand on my private part since the time I pledged allegiance with my right hand to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).

4) Since the time I accepted Islam, there was not a single jumu’ah that passed without me freeing a slave, and if I did not possess a slave on any jumu’ah, then I ensured that I freed the slave later on.

5) I never committed adultery throughout my life, neither before accepting Islam nor after accepting Islam.

6) I had equipped the army of Tabook with my own wealth.

7) I was blessed with the honour of gathering (i.e. memorizing) the Quraan Majeed in the time of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).

8) Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) married his daughter to me, and when she passed away, he married his other daughter to me.

9) I never drank wine throughout my life, neither in the period before Islam nor after Islam.

10) I was responsible for purchasing a piece of land (in Madinah Munawwarah) to extend the musjid, for which Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) promised that the one who purchases it will be blessed with Jannah. Hazrat Uthmaan’s (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) Fear for the Hearafter https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20934 Mon, 18 Sep 2023 13:44:36 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20934

Hazrat Haani (rahimahullah), the freed slave of Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), mentions that when Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) would stand at a grave, he would weep so profusely that his beard would become wet with his tears.

Someone asked him, “We notice that when you remember Jannah and Jahannum and discuss them, you are not affected to the point that you begin to cry, whereas when you stand at a grave, we see you so overcome by fear that you begin to cry profusely. What is the reason for this?”

Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) replied, “Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, ‘The grave is the first stage from the stages of the Hereafter. If one passes this stage and gains salvation, then there is hope that the stages to come will be easier, and if one does not pass this stage and gain salvation, then the stages to come will be even more difficult and severe for him.” (Sunan Tirmizi #2308)

Adopting a Soft and Lenient Approach when Transacting https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20913 Mon, 11 Sep 2023 13:15:54 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20913

‘Ataa bin Farrookh (rahimahullah) narrates the following:

On one occasion, Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) purchased a plot of land from a certain person. After purchasing the land, Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) waited for the person to come and collect his money. However, the person did not come.

When Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) met the man later on, he asked him, “Why did you not come to collect your money?” The man replied, “The reason for me not coming to collect the money is that I felt that you have not paid me a fair price for the land! Every person who I met rebuked me for selling the land to you at this price.” Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) asked him, “Is this really the reason for you not coming to collect your money?” The man replied in the affirmative.

Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then addressed him saying, “I give you an option to cancel the sale and take back your land or to leave the sale as is and take your money.”

Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) thereafter explained to him the reason for giving him the option of cancelling the sale or allowing it to continue saying, “Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had made du‘aa for the person who is lenient when transacting. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, ‘May Allah Ta‘ala bless that person with Jannah who adopts a soft and lenient approach with people at the time when he purchases, sells, makes payment or requests payment.”

The Hayaa of Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20895 Mon, 04 Sep 2023 13:43:59 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20895

Hazrat ‘Aa’ishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) reports the following:

On one occasion, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was lying down in my home and his kurta was slightly moved from the area of his blessed thighs or his blessed shin, though his blessed thighs and shins were covered by his lungi.

During that time, Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) requested permission to enter. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) permitted him to enter, and spoke to him while lying down in the same condition.

After some time, ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) requested permission to enter. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) permitted him to enter and spoke to him while lying down in the same condition.

Thereafter, ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) requested permission to enter. When ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) sought permission to enter, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) immediately sat up and straightened his clothing, placing his kurta over his lungi. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then permitted him to enter, after which they spoke for some time.

Hazrat ‘Aa’ishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) then mentioned:

When ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) left, I asked Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), “I noticed that when Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) entered, you remained lying down. Thereafter, when ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) entered, you also continued to lie down. However, when ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) entered, you sat up and straightened your clothing (i.e. why did you sit up and straighten your clothing for Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “How can I not display extra hayaa before a man who is such that even the angels display hayaa before him?” (Saheeh Muslim #2401)

In another similar narration, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “ ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) is a man who possesses an exceptionally high level of hayaa. I feared that if I had to permit him to enter while I was in that condition (lying down), then he would feel reserved in expressing his need to me (due to his exceptionally high level of hayaa).” (Saheeh Muslim #2402)

Glad Tidings of Jannah https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20877 Mon, 28 Aug 2023 13:02:15 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20877

Hazrat Abu Moosa (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports the following:

I was once in the blessed company of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) in one of the orchards of Madinah Munawwarah when a person came and sought permission to enter the orchard. Hearing the person’s request, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said to me, “Allow him to enter and give him the glad tidings of a high stage in Jannah.” I thus opened the door for the person and found him to be none other than Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). I conveyed to him the glad tidings which Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had mentioned, at which he praised Allah Ta‘ala in gratitude.

Soon thereafter, another person came and requested to enter the orchard. Hearing his request, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said to me, “Allow him to enter and give him the glad tidings of a high stage in Jannah.” I thus opened the do

or for the person, and found that he was none other than ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). I conveyed to him the glad tidings which Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had mentioned, at which he praised Allah Ta‘ala in gratitude.

After some time, another person sought permission to enter the orchard. Rasululah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said to me, “Allow him to enter, and give him the glad tidings of a high stage in Jannah, together with him facing a trial.” When I opened the door, I found that the person was none other than ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). I informed him of what Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had mentioned, at which he praised Allah Ta‘ala in gratitude and then said, “From Allah alone do we seek assistance.”

The First Muslim to Perform Hijrah with his Family https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20861 Mon, 21 Aug 2023 13:03:07 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20861

Hazrat Anas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) had left for Abyssinia, performing Hijrah with his respected wife, Hazrat Ruqayyah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), the blessed daughter of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).

News of their condition was delayed, and hence Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) became concerned and would come out of Makkah Mukarramah, seeking information in their regard. Eventually, a woman came to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and gave him information regarding them.

On this occasion, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) remarked, “Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) is the first person to perform Hijrah in the path of Allah Ta‘ala with his family after Nabi Lut (‘alaihis salaam).” (Majma’uz Zawaa’id #14498)

In another narration, it is mentioned that when Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) intended performing Hijrah to Abyssinia, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said to him, “Take Hazrat Ruqayyah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) with you. I feel that each of you will support and encourage the other to persevere.”

After a while from the time of their departure, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked Hazrat Asmaa (radhiyallahu ‘anha), the respected daughter of Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), to enquire regarding them. After enquiring, she found Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) with her respected father, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).

She said, “O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! I received information that Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) is presently travelling in the direction of the sea in the condition that his respected family, Hazrat Ruqayyah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) is seated on a saddled donkey.”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) became pleased and said, “O Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)! They are the first people in the world to perform Hijrah in the path of Allah Ta‘ala after the two Ambiyaa, Nabi Lut (‘alaihis salaam) and Nabi Ebrahim (‘alaihis salaam), performed Hijrah.” (Mustadrak Haakim #6849)

Purchasing a Well in Jannah https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20836 Mon, 14 Aug 2023 13:08:49 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20836

Purchasing a Well in Jannah

When the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) migrated to Madeenah Munawwarah, the water that was found in Madeenah Munawwarah was difficult for them to drink due it being bitter. However, there was a certain Jew living in Madinah Munawaarah who had a well of sweet water named Roomah, and he used to sell the water of his well to the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum).

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum), “Who will buy the well of Roomah from the Jew and donate it for the benefit of the Muslims so that he will be equal to the Muslims in drawing its water, and he will receive a well in Jannah in exchange of this well?”

Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) went to the Jew who was the owner of the well and offered to purchase Roomah from him. However, the Jew refused to sell the entire well, and instead only sold half of the well to Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) for twelve thousand dirhams.

Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) immediately donated it for the benefit of the Muslims. Thereafter, Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said to the Jew, “If you wish, we can hang two buckets on the well (so that we can both use the well at the same time), or if you wish, I can use it on one day and you can use it on the next day.” The Jew replied that he preferred to alternate days with Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) for the use of the well.

Thereafter, when it was the day of Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), the Muslims would come to the well and draw sufficient water to last them for two days. Seeing that the Muslims were no longer buying water from him, the Jew said to Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), “You have spoilt my well (as I can no longer sell the water to the people)! Why don’t you buy the other half from me.” Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) thus purchased the other half of the well from him for eight thousand dirhams and also donated it for the benefit of the Muslims.

Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) Enjoining Good at the Last Moment https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20825 Mon, 07 Aug 2023 13:46:51 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20825

On the morning when Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was stabbed, a youngster visited him and said to him, “O Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen! Rejoice over the glad tidings from Allah Ta‘ala! You are the Sahaabi of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and you are among those who accepted Islam in the very early days, you were thereafter appointed as the khalifah and you exercised justice throughout your rule, and you will shortly pass away as a martyr!”

When he heard this, Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) remarked, “I wish that all these aspects (that you have mentioned) assist me to just break even, so that there is nothing against me, and there is nothing in my favour (i.e. I would be happy if all my good deeds are merely sufficient to counter-balance my weaknesses and I am left with nothing in my favour and nothing against me)”.

When this youngster turned to leave, Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) noticed that his lower garment was below his ankles and touching the ground. Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) immediately ordered for him to be brought back, after which he told him, “O nephew! Raise your lower garment (and wear it above your ankles in accordance to the sunnah), for this is cleaner for your clothing and a means of adopting fear of Allah Ta‘ala” (Bukhaari #3700)

Hazrat Umar’s (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) Desire to be Buried with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20798 Mon, 31 Jul 2023 06:15:09 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20798

During the final moments after Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was fatally stabbed, he sent his son, Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma), to the home of Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha).

Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) instructed him saying, “Say to her that Umar conveys salaam. Do not say that Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen conveys salaam, as today I am no longer Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen (as I am about to pass away). Tell her that Umar bin Khattaab requests permission to be buried alongside his two companions, (Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)).”

Following the instruction of his father, Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) proceeded to the home of Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) where he found her sitting and weeping (over this great tragedy and the loss that the ummah would suffer through the demise of Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)).

He conveyed the salaam of Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) to her and then said, “Umar requests permission to be buried with his two companions.” Hearing the request, Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said, “I was hoping to be buried there (near Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), and my father, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)). However, today I will give preference to Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) over myself.”

When Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) returned, and mentioned to Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) that Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) had given permission for him to be buried alongside Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was greatly pleased.

Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then further instructed his son, Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) saying, “After I pass away, when you carry my body for the burial, then once again ask Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) for permission on my behalf saying, ‘‘Umar requests permission to be buried with his two companions.” If she again grants permission, then bury me there. If not, then bury me in the cemetery of the general Muslims.” (Saheeh Bukhaari #3700)

The Humility of Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20762 Mon, 24 Jul 2023 13:11:20 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20762

Hazrat Miswar bin Makhramah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that when Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was stabbed, he began to grieve and became extremely worried about the ummah.

Hazrat bin Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) comforted him saying: “O Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen! There is no need for you to grieve. You remained in the company of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and you fulfilled the rights of his companionship. Then Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) departed from this temporary abode in the condition that he was pleased with you.

“You then remained in the company of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and you honoured this relationship. Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) thereafter left the world while he was pleased with you.

“You then remained among the Muslims (as Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen) and you fulfilled the rights of the Ummah. If you pass away and separate from them, then certainly you will be departing from them in the condition that they are pleased with you.”

Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) replied: “As for what you have mentioned regarding the companionship of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and his being pleased with me, then (this is nothing of my own achievement instead) this is a great bounty and favour from the side of Allah Ta‘ala which He has bestowed upon me.

“With regards to the companionship of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and his being pleased with me, then this is also a bounty from the side of Allah Ta‘ala which he has bestowed upon me. As for this worry and grief that you find me in, this is on account of the concern I have for yourself and the rest of the Muslim ummah (that what will your condition be after I leave this world).

“I take a qasm on Allah Ta‘ala, if I had in my possession gold equivalent to the entire world, then I would certainly use it to ransom myself from the punishment of Allah Ta‘ala before I stand up before Him and meet Him.

Look at the fear of Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), despite him being granted the glad tidings of Jannah in this world by Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), this was the extent of his fear of Allah Ta‘ala at the time of his death.

Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) always acknowledged the lofty position of Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and he did not regard himself to be equal to Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).

On one occasion, a group of people praised Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) saying, “By Allah! We never saw a man who dispenses justice, speaks the truth and is more severe upon the hypocrites than you, O Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen! After Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), you are the greatest person (of this ummah)!”

Hearing this, Hazrat Auf bin Maalik (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) objected to the people who mentioned this saying, “You people have not spoken the truth! By Allah, I have seen another man who is actually the greatest person after Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)!”

When the people asked Hazrat Auf (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) as to whom he was referring to, he replied, “I am referring to Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) (as he is the greatest person of this ummah after Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and the Ambiyaa).”

Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then said, “By Allah! Hazrat Auf (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) has spoken the truth and you people have not spoken the truth! Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was more fragrant than musk while I was still astray and more misguided than my family’s camel (i.e. Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) mentioned this referring to the period before he had accepted Islam, and at that time, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) already possessed Imaan and had excelled in Deen).” (Manaaqib Umar bin Khattaab libnil Jowzi pg. 141)

Hazrat Umar’s (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) Concern for Salaah

On the morning that Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was stabbed, Hazrat Miswar bin Makhramah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) came to see him. On entering, he found Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) covered with a sheet and unconscious.

Hazrat Miswar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) asked those present, “How is he?” They replied, “He is unconscious as you can see.” As there was not a lot of time remaining for the fajr salaah, Hazrat Miswar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) advised them, “Wake him up by calling him for salaah, as there is nothing that you can awaken him for that is more urgent and important to him than salaah.”

They thus called out, “Salaah, O Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen!” As soon as they did this, Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) awoke and exclaimed, “Yes! By Allah! There is no share in Islam for the one who neglects salaah!”

Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) thereafter performed his salaah while blood flowed from his wound. (Al-Mu’jamul Awsat #8181)

Hazrat Aslam (rahimahullah), the slave of Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), reports that Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) had nine special platters reserved for sending gifts to the Azwaaj-e-Mutahharaat (respected wives of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and mothers of the ummah).

Hazrat Aslam (rahimahullah) mentioned that whenever any delicacy, fruit or meat would come to Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), then he would make nine shares, place them on the nine platters and respectfully send them to the Azwaaj-e-Mutahharaat.

He would send the first eight platters to the other Azwaaj-e-Mutahharaat and would send the last platter to his beloved daughter, Hazrat Hafsah (radhiyallahu ‘anha).

At times, if there was a slight shortage in any platter, he would send this platter to his beloved daughter, Hazrat Hafsah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), and ensure that the other wives of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) received the full platters. In this way, Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) gave preference to the respected wives of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) over his own family. (Muwatta Imaam Muhammad #405)

The precaution which Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) exercised when dealing with public wealth was indeed proverbial.

On one occasion, some musk and ambergris (a type of perfume) arrived from Bahrain. As it was public wealth, Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said, “By Allah! I wish to find a person who is proficient at weighing items so that she can weigh these perfumes for me, enabling me to distribute them equally between the Muslims.”

Hearing this, his respected wife, Hazrat Aatikah bint Zaid (radhiyallahu ‘anha), offered to fulfil this service saying, “I am proficient at weighing. Bring it and I will weigh it for you.” However, Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) declined her offer.

She then asked him the reason for his declining, to which he replied, “I fear that while weighing it, you might take the perfume that remains on your fingers and apply it on yourself.” Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) thereafter mentioned, “I fear that if you have to rub your fingers on your body after weighing the perfume, you will receive more perfume than the rest of the Muslims.” (Az Zuhd lil Imaam Ahmed #623)

Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) Reminding Himself of Accountability in the Hereafter https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20618 Sun, 21 May 2023 09:47:31 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20618

Despite Allah Ta’ala blessing Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) to be among the ten people that were promised Jannah in this world, and being the second khalifah of Islam, he was extremely humble and greatly feared accountability before Allah Ta‘ala on the Day of Qiyaamah.

It is reported that on one occasion, Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) entered a certain orchard while accompanied by Hazrat Anas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). While in the orchard, he separated from Hazrat Anas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and went to another section of the orchard. He was unaware that Hazrat Anas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) could overhear him, from where he was, and he began to address himself and remind himself of accountability in the Hereafter.

He said, “Umar bin Khattaab! People refer to you by the title, Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen! If you regard this to be excellent, then remember that by Allah, O the son of Khattaab, you will have to certainly fear Allah Ta‘ala in this world, or else He will most definitely punish you!” (Muwatta Imaam Maalik #3638)

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) mentions:

I was present on the occasion when the body of Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was placed on the bier after his martyrdom. People began to throng around his body. While waiting for his body to be raised and taken for burial, they were reciting durood upon Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and making dua for Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).

Suddenly, I found a person behind me holding onto my shoulder. When I turned to see who it was, I saw that it was none other than Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).

While looking at the body of Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), he said, “O Umar! May Allah Ta‘ala shower His special mercy on you!” He then said, “At this time, there is no person whose actions are more beloved to me, and with which I wish to meet Allah Ta‘ala, more than your actions! I take an oath by Allah! I have conviction that Allah Ta‘ala will join you with your two companions, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).

“Throughout your life, you always remained with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). Hence, I would often hear Nabi (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) saying, ‘I went to a certain certain place with Abu Bakr and Umar. I entered a certain place with Abu Bakr and Umar. On coming to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), Uqbah removed his shawl, placed it around his neck and began to ruthlessly strangle him with it.

No sooner did Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) learn about this, he rushed to the scene to defend and protect Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). He immediately grabbed Uqbah by his shoulder and pushed him away from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).

Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then reproachingly addressed Uqbah in the following words:

اَتَقۡتُلُوۡنَ رَجُلًا  اَنۡ یَّقُوۡلَ رَبِّیَ اللّٰہُ وَ قَدۡ جَآءَکُمۡ  بِالۡبَیِّنٰتِ مِنۡ رَّبِّکُمۡ
