Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi (rahimahullah) once mentioned the following:

Allah Ta‘ala created man as the most superior of all His creation, only due to the bounty of reasoning and intelligence which Allah Ta‘ala granted him. Therefore, a person should use his reasoning ability and intelligence in the correct way, and he should ensure that his reasoning and intelligence always remains subject to wahi (divine revelation – i.e. he should not employ his reasoning against the divine command of Allah Ta‘ala).

If a person’s reasoning does not conform to wahi (divine revelation), but goes against it, then such reasoning is not considered, and it is on account of such reasoning that we find people, night and day, falling into problems in simple and clear matters (i.e. on account of them leaving the divine command of Allah Ta‘ala which leads one towards complete guidance, they fall into problems and difficulties).

Adopting a Humble and Respectful Approach when Addressing the Ulama https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21578 Mon, 19 Feb 2024 16:08:53 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21578

Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned:

When jamaats go to Sahaaranpur, Deoband and other similar areas for the purpose of tableegh, then letters should be sent with the businessmen of Delhi accompanying them. In these letters, the Ulama of those localities should be addressed with utmost humility and told: “These jamaats are being sent to your locality with the intention of making tableegh among the people of the locality. Despite the fact that your time is very valuable, if you are able to take out a little time to oversee and guide these jamaats, provided that no harm will come to your work or the work of your students, then we will appreciate if you will please do so.”

Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) then said:

The asaatizah (teachers) should come out in the path of Allah Ta’ala with their students and they should guide them in doing this work (of dawat and tableegh). The students of deen should not participate in this work on their own, without the supervision of their asaatizah. As for those going out in jamaat, then they should be advised that if the Ulama do not give them too much of attention, then they should not entertain negative thoughts about them in their hearts. Rather, they should understand and think to themselves that these Ulama are engaged in work which is even more important than our work. Even at night, they remain engaged in the service of the knowledge of deen while others are fast asleep.

Therefore, if they do not show much attention to the jamaat, but show more attention to other people, then we should attribute this to our own shortcoming. We should feel that since we have not visited them and spent time in their company, they show more attention to the people who have remained in their company for years compared to the attention they show to us.

Thereafter, Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) said:

To entertain negative thoughts about an ordinary Muslim, without any basis, is a means of one falling into destruction, and to have baseless objections against the Ulama is even more severe and serious.

In our path of Da’wat and Tableegh, honouring the Muslims and respecting the Ulama is a fundamental principle. Every Muslim should be honoured on account of his Islam, and as for the Ulama, then on account of the knowledge of deen which they possess, they should be afforded even greater respect.

The Dynamic Effect of Zikrullah https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21561 Mon, 12 Feb 2024 15:44:25 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21561

Once, a person wrote a letter to Hazrat Shaikhul Hadith Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) mentioning that despite him being punctual upon his ma’moolaat (devotional practices prescribed by the Shaikh e.g. zikr, tilaawah, etc.) he still did not perceive any change and improvement in his spiritual condition.

In reply, Hazrat Shaikh Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) wrote the following:

If one is punctual upon his ma’moolaat (and follows the advices of the Shaikh of remaining committed to the sunnah and refraining from sin), his condition will definitely improve. It is not possible for one to engage in zikr and take the most pure name of Allah Ta‘ala and not see any effect in his life.

Nevertheless, at times, the delay in perceiving the effect is due to the heart being filled with impurity. The more the impurity in one’s heart, the longer it will take to perceive the positive effects of the zikr. Making zikr of the most pure name of Allah Ta‘ala is the most effective method of purifying the heart. When the dirt on the clothing is little, then the clothing is cleaned very quickly. However, the dirtier the clothing, the longer it takes for it to become clean.

Visiting the Haramain Shareefain is a means of acquiring abundant blessings and making spiritual progress, and this will also assist one in one’s spiritual progress, hence you should certainly make the intention of visiting the Haramain Shareefain.

However, the extent to which the heart is cleansed and purified through engaging in the zikr of Allah Ta‘ala is such that nothing else can purify the heart to this extent. When one takes the name of Allah Ta‘ala, then even if he takes the name of Allah Ta‘ala in the state of unmindfulness, it will still have an effect.

The Method to Save Oneself from Sins https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21536 Mon, 05 Feb 2024 15:41:37 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21536

A person once came to Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi (rahimahullah) and mentioned to him that he had a habit of gambling. He asked Moulana for a cure which will enable him to give up this wrong habit. Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi (rahimahullah) mentioned the following to him:

Self-determination (to leave out the sin) is the cure. Also, you should make it compulsory upon yourself that whenever you commit this sin, you will perform one hundred rakaats of nafl salaah, and you will leave out eating two meals in the day. However, the main cure is self-determination.

Thereafter, this person mentioned that he does not have love in his heart for his parents. Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi (rahimahullah) advised him to go out of his way to serve his parents, as this will cause his love for them to increase (i.e. Hazrat Thaanwi (rahimahullah) advised him to serve them to the best of his ability with complete love and devotion, knowing well that this is the command of Allah Ta‘ala, and through this, he will earn Allah Ta‘ala’s pleasure and Jannah).

Not Probing Into the Domestic Life of One’s Elders https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21502 Mon, 29 Jan 2024 15:43:23 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21502

Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned:

When taking deeni benefit and guidance from our deeni elders, then it is necessary for us to keep our relationship with them solely for the sake of Allah Ta‘ala. We should look closely at their statements, actions and the way they conduct, and emulate them in these aspects.

We should not probe into their personal and domestic lives to see how they conduct with their families (as this does not relate to us). Rather, we should remain completely unconcerned in regard to these matters.

The reason is that it is natural for a person to be informal when interacting with his family (and for a stranger to be concerned about the personal affairs of another person is against the teachings of deen. Furthermore, looking at the deeni elder being informal with his family could lead to one not maintaining the level of respect he ought to show him).

Apart from this, it is inevitable that every person has some shortcomings in his life. Hence, if a person focuses on the shortcomings of the deeni elder, then it is possible that one will wish to emulate him in that. At times, through looking at the deeni elder’s shortcomings in his personal life, one may even begin to have objections in one’s heart against him which will thereafter become a cause for one being deprived of benefiting from him.

It is for this reason that the kitaabs of the Mashaayikh have emphasized that the person treading the path of self-reformation should not probe into the personal and domestic life of the sheikh.

The Remedy for Anger https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21447 Mon, 15 Jan 2024 16:23:45 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21447

Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi (rahimahullah) once mentioned the following:

If a person becomes angry with someone, then he should either leave the place or ask the person with whom he is angry to leave (i.e. if he has some authority over the person, e.g. one’s worker, he should ask him to leave). He should also drink some cold water (to cool himself down).

If he is extremely angry (and cannot contain his anger, then in order for him to gain control over himself), he should think to himself that Allah Ta‘ala has many rights over us which we are not fulfilling correctly. Despite us erring so much and not fulfilling His rights correctly, He continues to forgive us and overlook our faults. Hence, in the same way, we should also forgive and overlook the faults of His servants. Otherwise, if Allah Ta‘ala were to take us to account (for all our mistakes and shortcomings), then what will our condition be?

Zikrullah – The Remedy of the Heart https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21432 Mon, 08 Jan 2024 15:40:31 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21432

Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned:

Despite the Ambiyaa (‘alaihimus salaam) being sinless and receiving divine protection from Allah Ta‘ala, and despite them being blessed with divine knowledge and guidance directly from Allah Ta‘ala, when they interacted with all types of people for the purpose of propagating deen to them, the impurity of people’s hearts would affect their illuminated hearts.

The Ambiyaa (‘alaihimus salaam) would cleanse their illuminated hearts of the ill-effects (of the association of people) through them remaining in seclusion and engaging in zikrullah and ibaadah.

In Surah Muzzammil, when commanding Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) to perform Tahajjud Salaah, Allah Ta‘ala mentioned:

اِنَّ لَكَ فِی النَّهارِ سَبۡحًا طَوِیۡلًا ﴿۷﴾

Indeed, during the day, you have a prolonged occupation (through guiding the ummah in matters of deen). (Surah Muzzammil v. 7)

In this verse, there is also an indication that there was a need for Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) to remain in seclusion during the night to engage in ibaadah on account of him interacting with people during the day.

Thereafter, in the very next verse, Allah Ta‘ala says:

وَ اذۡکُرِ اسۡمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبتلۡ اِلَیۡه تَبۡتِیۡلًا ﴿۸﴾

And remember the name of your Rabb (i.e. engage in the zikr of Allah), and devote yourself to Him with exclusive devotion. (Surah Muzzammil v. 8)

This verse further supports and substantiates the point that there is a special need for those people who engage in the activities of tableegh to engage in zikrullah, having fikr (concern for their islaah), and performing ibaadah in seclusion. We, who are in tableegh, should also practise upon this verse (by performing tahajjud and remembering Allah Ta‘ala in seclusion during the night).

In fact, our need to do this is even greater, as firstly, we are weak and our hearts are filled with darkness. Then secondly, those seniors from whom we acquire deeni benefit and guidance are also not sinless, and thirdly, the people whom we interact with for the purpose of tableegh are the normal laymen (who are also not sinless).

In essence, we ourselves are filled with human weaknesses, and on both sides, we are surrounded by people who are also filled with human weaknesses, and this will certainly have an effect upon our hearts. Therefore, it is vitally important for us to engage in zikrullah and the ibaadah of Allah Ta‘ala in seclusion during some part of the night.

This is the special remedy and treatment for the evil effects that can come onto one’s heart when associating with people.

Maintaining the Level of Ikhlaas at all Times https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21358 Mon, 18 Dec 2023 15:28:16 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21358

Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned:

In our effort of Da’wat and Tableegh, it is extremely important for one to ensure that his intention remains purely for the sake of Allah Ta‘ala at all times. Our brothers who strive in this work should regard fulfilling the command of Allah Ta‘ala and acquiring His pleasure as their sole purpose and object for doing the work. In proportion to the purity of one’s intention, and the stronger the sincerity one has when carrying out good deeds, one will receive reward by Allah Ta‘ala.

It is a known fact that after striving for deen, when one begins to see the worldly benefits of one’s sacrifice and striving materialize, then since the fruits and outcome of one’s actions are being witnessed before one’s eyes, one’s reward will decrease. The reason is that (initially, one was only doing the action for the pleasure of Allah without seeing any worldly benefit, but now since the worldly benefit of the sacrifice is also being witnessed,) the sacrifice is also taking place with acquiring these worldly benefits.

Look at the example of the Conquest of Makkah Mukarramah. Before the conquest of Makkah Mukarramah, those who sacrificed their lives and wealth received a greater reward compared to those who sacrificed their lives and wealth after the conquest of Makkah Mukarramah. The reason is that after the conquest of Makkah Mukarramah, the victory of Islam had already been achieved and the Muslims gaining dominance and rulership in the land had been witnessed by the people. (Hence, the level of ikhlaas and sacrifice of those who embraced Islam after the conquest of Makkah Mukarramah was not as great as the level of ikhlaas and sacrifice of those who embraced Islam before the conquest of Makkah Mukarramah).

Therefore, Allah Ta‘ala mentions in the Qur’aan Majeed:

Those from among you (i.e. the Sahaabah) who spent wealth before the Conquest (of Makkah Mukarramah) and fought (in the path of Allah Ta‘ala) are not equal (to those among you who spent wealth and fought in the path of Allah Ta‘ala after the Conquest of Makkah Mukaramah). Those (who spent wealth and fought before the Conquest) are greater in rank than those who spent wealth and fought later on, though for both groups, Allah has promised a good reward. I am extremely saddened to hear that your father is currently displeased with you. You should go out of your way to please him and make him happy. The displeasure of one’s parents is a means of one incurring great loss in one’s deen and in one’s dunya.

You should make up by humbling yourself and pleasing them, and fulfilling what they want from you. If they are displeased for something that does not relate to deen (but relates to some permissible worldly affair), then as far as possible, try to please them and refrain from that which they do not want you to do.

You should also continue to ask your parents for forgiveness, and in asking them for forgiveness, it will not cause you any humiliation or disgrace.

Acquiring a Special Connection with Allah Ta’ala https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21278 Mon, 20 Nov 2023 17:10:01 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21278

Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi (rahimahullah) once mentioned the following:

According to the Sufis, the term “Nisbat (connection)” refers to acquiring a special connection with Allah Ta‘ala and this special connection is a sign of one being a wali of Allah Ta‘ala (a special friend of Allah Ta‘ala).

The way to acquire this nisbat can be summed up in two sentences: (1) Through constantly remaining in the obedience of Allah Ta‘ala (2) Through constantly remaining in the remembrance of Allah Ta‘ala. In other words, that person is regarded as a Saahib-e-Nisbat (a special friend of Allah Ta‘ala) who at all times adheres to the commands of Shariah, refrains from all types of sins and constantly remains in Zikr (the remembrance of Allah Ta‘ala).

Hazrat Thaanwi (rahimahullah) was then asked whether this Nisbat is acquired through the grace of Allah Ta’ala or through one’s effort and actions. Hazrat Thaanwi (rahimahullah) replied that gaining this Nisbat takes place solely through the grace of Allah Ta‘ala and not through one’s effort and actions. However, when one remains constant in adhering to the commands of Shariah and fulfils what Allah Ta‘ala wants from him at all times, then Allah Ta‘ala blesses him with Nisbat.

The Importance of Strengthening One’s Imaan and Yaqeen https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21246 Mon, 13 Nov 2023 15:52:26 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21246

Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned:

The principle in regard to one’s Islamic beliefs is that one should make a concerted effort to strengthen his Islamic beliefs, and he should not entertain stray thoughts, thereby allowing them to affect his Islamic beliefs. Thereafter (i.e. after believing in all the tenets of faith correctly), one should still have the concern and worry in his heart as to whether he has acquired the desired level of yaqeen (conviction) in his beliefs or not.

Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) then said, “The statement of Hazrat Ibnu Abi Mulaikah (rahimahullah) recorded in Saheeh Bukhaari shareef refers to this very same level of imaan and yaqeen when he said:

لقيت ثلاثين من أصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كلهم يخشى على نفسه النفاق

I had met thirty of the companions of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) (i.e. the Sahaabah [radhiyallahu ‘anhum]), and each one of them feared hypocrisy over himself.

(In other words, each Sahaabi feared that the level of his imaan has not reached the highest levels of perfection, and therefore he expressed concern of nifaaq.)

Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) thereafter mentioned:

Strengthening one’s imaan and conviction is also necessary so that whenever one hears the words of Allah Ta‘ala and Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), then one’s heart will immediately receive these words with great honour, respect and reverence.

In this case (when one receives the word of Allah Ta‘ala and Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) with firm conviction), then it will be easy for one to practise upon the commandments of Allah Ta‘ala and Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) (as one’s imaan will motivate him to do so), and there will be life in one’s actions as well (due to one’s imaani level being high).

Hazrat Shaikh Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned the following:

The only being who blesses and bestows wealth upon the creation is Allah Ta‘ala. Now, it is left to Him to decide how He wishes to bless a person. Overall, Allah Ta‘ala inspires the hearts of people to fulfil the needs of others.

I had a certain friend, and whenever it would be the season for ber (a type of Indian plum), he would send me five seyr (6.25kg) of ber from Deoband (as Deoband was famously known for its ber). The year that friend of mine passed away – then that very same year, a basket of ber began to arrive from another friend of mine.

Similarly, I had a certain friend who lived in Kaandhlah. Those who are present in the majlis (gathering) from Kaandhlah will know him. He was one of the wealthy and influential people of Kaandhlah. He had fixed an amount of one hundred rupees which he would annually send to me as a gift. He would also send gifts to the senior Ulama. When he passed away, then that very same year, another friend of mine began sending this gift to me.

My beloved friends! Understand well that it is only Allah who gives! If you wish to ask, then only ask from Him as He is the true owner of everything. He alone gives, and He alone inspires the hearts of His servants to give to whomsoever He wishes.

O Ulama! Listen attentively! Even if you break your head a hundred thousand times trying to gain wealth from people, nobody will give you anything. Neither will the principal of the madrasah give you anything, nor will the trustees and those in charge of the madrasah give you anything. Allah Ta‘ala alone is the giver, and He alone inspires the hearts of His servants to give to whomsoever He wishes.

My beloved friends! Only beg from Allah Ta‘ala, constantly beg from Him, and when you beg from Him then shed tears while asking from Him. The Hadith teaches us that even if you are in need of a shoelace which has broken, then turn to Him and ask Him for it.

A Muslim’s Relationship with Non-Muslim Rulers https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21175 Mon, 30 Oct 2023 16:44:55 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=21175

In regard to a believer’s relationship with non-Muslim rulers, Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi (rahimahullah) once mentioned the following:

Having love for the non-Muslim rulers and befriending them is an internal fitnah (i.e. a fitnah that will harm one’s deen, as one will have to make compromises in one’s deen in order to keep them happy), and incurring their anger is an external fitnah (i.e. a fitnah that will harm one’s dunya).

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) has taught us to seek Allah Ta‘ala’s protection from both these types of fitnahs (i.e. internal and external fitnahs). Hence, the Hadith mentions the following dua that we should make:

اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْفِتَنِ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ

O Allah! I seek Your protection from all fitnahs – those that are apparent (i.e. external) and those that are hidden (i.e. internal).

Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned:

The primary purpose of the effort of da’wat and tableegh is to turn people away from the wrongs that shaitaan invites them towards and bring them to the complete obedience of Allah Ta‘ala. However, without effort and sacrifice, it will not be possible to achieve this purpose. Hence, to achieve this goal, people will be required to sacrifice their lives as well as their wealth for the cause of deen.

In the case of da’wat and tableegh, sacrificing one’s life refers to one leaving his home for the sake of Allah Ta‘ala and going out in the path of Allah Ta‘ala to spread the message of Allah Ta‘ala and propagate deen, and sacrificing one’s wealth refers to one bearing his own expenses and using his own money to go out in the path of Allah Ta‘ala.

Due to circumstances, if one is unable to personally go out in the path of Allah Ta‘ala at any time, then during that time, he should encourage others to go out in the path of Allah Ta‘ala, and he should also try to financially assist people to go out in the path of Allah.

In this manner, on the basis of the Hadith which mentions “The one who guides another person towards carrying out some good deed is like the one who carried out the good deed”, he will receive the reward of the efforts of all those people who he had sent out. Similarly, if he will give some financial assistance to those going out, then he will also receive the reward for sacrificing his wealth in the path of Allah Ta‘ala.

Hazrat Shaikh Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned the following:

As far as the sin of shaving and trimming the beard (less than a fist length) is concerned, then though it is (a major sin, it is) not as severe as the sins of zina and consuming alcohol, etc. However the difference between the two (shaving the beard and zina) is that when a person commits zina, then for the period of time when he is engaged in the sin of zina, he loses the noor of his imaan. After committing the sin, the noor of his imaan returns.

On the contrary, when a person shaves his beard, then he remains in the state of sin all the time – as he is involved in this sin even when he engages in ibaadah such as performing salaah, fasting, reciting the Qur’aan Majeed, performing haj, etc.

Furthermore, perpetrating this sin involves breaking the command of Allah Ta‘ala in an extremely brazen and bold manner. The reason is that the person who shaves his beard comes before people in a manner where he reveals to them openly that he has committed this sin.

Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi (rahimahullah) once mentioned:

In the path of seeking self-reformation, it is obvious that a person will be in need of a sheikh (spiritual guide to guide him through the path). However, since many people are unaware of the procedure to follow and the criteria to look for when selecting a sheikh, they err in selecting the right person for their islaah (self-reformation).

Hazrat Thaanwi (rahimahullah) thereafter mentioned that the following criteria should be found in the person one wishes to take as his sheikh (spiritual guide):

1. The person should be well acquainted with the laws of shari’ah, though he may not be an aalim who is an expert in every science of deen.

2. He must have knowledge of the path of tasawwuf and sulook, though he may not be a person who experiences kashf, nor a person from whom miracles or supernatural acts are witnessed.

3. He must have spent a considerable amount of time in the company of a sheikh-e-kaamil (a pious spiritual mentor who has completed his islaah under his mashaaikh)

4. When sitting in his majlis, the general effect that one finds is that one’s love for the dunya decreases and a yearning for the Aakhirah is created (or increases) in one’s heart. Similarly, fear for getting involved in sins and the motivation to carry out good deeds is created in the heart, regardless of whether one experiences any spiritual conditions or not.

Despite the person being a sheikh-e-kaamil, if one does not perceive any benefit through remaining in his company, then one should realize that the reason for this is that one does not have compatibility with the sheikh. Therefore, one should leave this sheikh and seek another sheikh.

Nevertheless, even when one does not find compatibility with a particular sheikh, he should not show any form of disrespect to him. This can be compared to the situation where a certain doctor’s treatment is not proving effective for a person. In such a situation, one will refer to another doctor, but an intelligent person will not run-down or disrespect the first doctor.

The Position of Fazaa’il and Masaa’il https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20990 Mon, 02 Oct 2023 15:36:06 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20990

Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned the following:

The position of fazaa’il (virtues and rewards of various good deeds) is before masaa’il. When people come to know of the fazaa’il (virtues and rewards of various good deeds), then they will have conviction and yaqeen of receiving virtues and rewards for carrying out the good deeds. This yaqeen stems from imaan, and this is the thing that will motivate them to practice upon deen.

Hence, when they will be motivated to practice upon deen, then they will perceive the need to enquire and find out about the various masaa’il of deen. It is for this reason that we feel it important to explain to people the fazaa’il of good deeds (before explaining to them the masaa’il of those deeds).

How to Respond to People’s Correction https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20978 Mon, 25 Sep 2023 15:21:06 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20978

Hazrat Shaikh Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned the following:

My beloved brothers! There is something which I wish to mention! If you hear people attributing any weakness or fault to me, then you should inform me of what they have said about me.

In reality, when people pull out one’s faults, then one should regard such people as his well-wishers (as they are bringing his weaknesses to his attention). After hearing what they have mentioned, he should ponder to see how much of truth lies in their words.

If the person who attributed the weakness or fault is sincere in his correction, then this is good and should make one happy, and he should then make a concerted effort to rectify himself. On the contrary, if the weakness or fault mentioned is untrue, then he should express gratitude to Allah Ta‘ala (that through the grace of Allah Ta‘ala, he is free of the weakness or fault which the person had attributed to him).

The crux of the matter is that when one hears people mentioning his weakness or fault, he should not become upset or angry.

Taking the Work of Deen From People According to their Abilities https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20957 Mon, 18 Sep 2023 14:31:15 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20957

Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned:

When carrying out the effort of deen, then the correct system and method to be adopted is that people who are less qualified should be given work according to their position and ability (and those who are more qualified should be given work according to their position and ability). To engage those who are more qualified in the simple work is not correct when the less qualified people are available to fulfil this work.

In fact, it is actually a form of showing ingratitude to the favour of Allah Ta‘ala (by not utilizing the ability of those more qualified correctly), and it is also a form of dealing unjustly with the less-qualified (as they are not afforded the opportunity to fulfil the work of deen which they are able to do).

The Formula to Protect One’s Deen and Imaan https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20921 Mon, 11 Sep 2023 14:21:34 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20921

Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi (rahimahullah) once mentioned:

Hazrat Haatim Asamm (rahimahullah) once said, “I feel that until one does not recite some portion of the Qur’aan Majeed daily as well as read or listen to some of the advices and incidents of his sheikh or other mashaaikh of the silsilah daily, his imaan will not remain safe.”

On one occasion, the people enquired from Hazrat Hamdaani (rahimahullah), “When a person’s sheikh passes away, then what should he do in order to safeguard his imaan?”

Hazrat Hamdaani (rahimahullah) replied, “He should study his sheikh’s advices, listen to his teachings and ponder over the meaning of his words. The reason is that through studying his advices and incidents, one will develop a connection with him and with deen, and this connection will then become the means for one to remain firm upon deen and acquire salvation in the Hereafter. The Hadith mentions, “The one who emulates a people will be counted among them (in the sight of Allah Ta‘ala).”

Furthermore, an additional benefit that is acquired through studying the incidents and advices of the mashaaikh and pious saints is that one will realise that one’s speech, actions and condition does not resemble theirs, and as a result, one will feel humbled, and self-admiration and pride will leave one’s heart. Thereafter, one will desire to emulate them and will endeavour to become like them.

Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned the following:

When I was young, I came across a kitaab which most probably was written by Mufti Sa’dullah. In this kitaab, I read that Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) once mentioned, “Whatever goodness I acquired in my life, I acquired it through the blessing of the following dua:

اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْتَعِيْنُكَ عَلٰى طَاعَتِكَ

O Allah! Indeed, we seek Your special assistance in remaining upon Your obedience!

Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) then mentioned:

“From the time I read this, I made a point of reciting this dua regularly. Once, a student who was memorizing the Qur’aan Majeed requested me to give him a ta’weez to assist him in memorizing the Qur’aan Majeed. Upon his request, I taught him this dua and told him to recite it eleven times after the fardh salaah.”

The Method of Creating the Correct Deeni Mindset Within People https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20867 Mon, 21 Aug 2023 14:10:00 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20867

Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned the need for creating within people a deeni mindset where they will refer to the Ulama for guidance in all their matters and disputes. Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) thereafter said:

This mindset (of referring to the Ulama for guidance in all matters and disputes) will not come about in people all at once. Rather, the way to achieve this is that one will first need to create an enthusiasm and desire within people to obey Allah Ta‘ala and Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and to follow the Shari’ah.

Once this enthusiasm reaches a point where it becomes dominant in them and overcomes their own desires, then gradually, with wisdom, they should be taught that the way for them to fulfil this enthusiasm of obeying Allah Ta‘ala and Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) is that they should refer to the Ulama who have a deep connection with Allah Ta‘ala and Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). Thereafter, whatever guidance they receive from the Ulama, they should accept it with great honour and respect, and they should practise upon it with zeal and enthusiasm. This is the method to change the direction of people’s lives and create within them the correct deeni mindset.

Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned the following:

A certain policeman who was my mureed held the rank of Deputy Inspector. He once wrote a letter to me in which he said,

“I perform the maghrib, esha and fajr salaahs with jamaat in the musjid, but at the time of zuhr and asr, I have to pass through the market place (to go to the musjid to perform salaah with jamaat in the musjid).

Firstly, when I walk past the people in the market place (to go to the musjid), then people stand up out of respect and honour for me (this is one reason why I feel shy to go to the musjid for zuhr and asr). Secondly, at this time, there are so many people present in the musjid that I feel that if I go to the musjid and perform salaah with them, my dignity and respect will no longer remain among them, whereas this rank and position of Deputy Inspector which I hold requires one to command a great amount of dignity and respect.”

This Deputy Inspector also wrote that he felt shy to perform salaah with all the people (in the musjid at the time of zuhr and asr).

In reply, I wrote to him and said, “If you are living in a place and the conditions change where you begin to feel shy to practise your Islam, then will you leave your Islam as well? Performing salaah with jamaat in the musjid does not cause a person’s dignity and respect to decrease in any way. Rather, it causes respect and love to be created in the hearts of people for one. It is not a cause for one to lose respect in the eyes of people and for them to look down at him. This bounty of performing salaah with jamaat in the musjid is indeed a very great bounty of Allah Ta‘ala.

I am extremely happy to hear that Allah Ta’ala, out of His sheer grace and mercy, has saved you from falling into the sin of casting lustful glances and looking at haraam.

Casting lustful glances and looking at haraam is an extremely destructive spiritual malady.  It causes the sweetness of one’s ibaadah to be lost in such proportions that if only one had knowledge of this, one would be greatly surprised to find that in such a short period of time, one can lose so much.

The Importance of Seeking the Shar’ee Verdict in all Disputes and Affairs https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20805 Mon, 31 Jul 2023 15:23:29 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20805

Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned:

I wish to create within the people of Mewat the importance of referring their disputes and matters to the pious Ulama who have a deep connection with Allah Ta‘ala and Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). They should refer to them and seek the Islamic verdict for all their disputes.

Furthermore, they should feel within their hearts that (since these pious Ulama have a deep connection with Allah Ta‘ala and Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), they will issue the verdict according to the shari’ah, and) even if I only receive half of what I am claiming, (I should be pleased with the decision, as) it will be filled with the mercy of Allah Ta‘ala and barakah (blessings).

Similarly, they should understand that if they refer their dispute to a worldly-class person who issues verdicts contrary to the Shari’ah, then even if I get all the wealth which I am claiming, the wealth will become a calamity for me as it is devoid of barakah (due to the verdict opposing deen, and the wealth I receive over and above my right will be haraam for me).

Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) then recited the following verse of the Qur’aan Majeed:

فَلَا وَرَبِّکَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ حَتّٰی یُحَکِّمُوۡکَ فِیۡمَا شَجَرَ بَیۡنَهمۡ ثُمَّ لَا یَجِدُوۡا فِیۡ اَنۡفُسِهمۡ حَرَجًا مِّمَّا قَضَیۡتَ وَیُسَلِّمُوۡا تَسۡلِیۡمًا

By your Rabb (Lord)! They will not believe, until they make you (O Muhammed [sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam]) the judge in the disputes that arise between them, and thereafter they should find no reluctance in their hearts against what you have decided, and they should surrender to it in total submission. (Surah Nisaa v. 65)

After reciting the above verse, Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) said:

The demand of this verse is as I have mentioned – that in all disputes and matters, the verdict of the shari’ah should be sought.

The Effective Approach when Treating Spiritual Maladies https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20776 Mon, 24 Jul 2023 13:56:23 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20776

Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned the following:

When treating spiritual sicknesses and maladies, the way that is most effective is by treating the root cause. The root cause for committing sins is the urge and demand of one’s nafs (carnal desires) to commit sins. Hence, the treatment is for one to refrain from fulfilling those urges and demands by one exercising self-restraint.

If one takes up the courage to oppose his nafs in this manner, then all his spiritual maladies will be treated and rectified. However, if one does not adopt this approach and tries to treat each malady and sickness individually, then this will indeed be an arduous and difficult task.

This approach of opposing the nafs is known as ‘mujaahadah’ (making effort and striving to gain the proximity of Allah Ta‘ala), and engaging in zikr assists one in this mujaahadah. The reason is that through engaging in zikr, one draws closer to Allah Ta‘ala, and this will be the means for one receiving the divine assistance of Allah Ta‘ala through which one’s mujaahadah will become easy.

If one only engages in zikr (without carrying out the mujaahadah of opposing the nafs and leaving sins), then one will not find the desired result.

For this reason, I generally say that two things are important and necessary (in the path of self-reformation); ittibaa and ittilaa.

Note:

Ittibaa is to remain committed to following the guidance and instruction of the Sheikh – spiritual guide.

Ittilaa is to regularly inform the Sheikh of one’s condition, weaknesses, etc. so that one may know how to rectify one’s weaknesses.

It is natural for a person to feel affected when faced with difficult and unfavourable conditions. However, one should not become so overwhelmed by the situation (thereby becoming despondent of the mercy of Allah Ta‘ala and losing hope).

It should be understood that feeling affected by a situation does not mean that one is displeased with the decree of Allah Ta‘ala. You should keep the verse of the Qur’aan Majeed before you in which Allah Ta‘ala says, “And We will certainly test you with some fear, hunger….” and thereafter place your entire reliance on Allah Ta‘ala and explain to yourself that every condition is from Allah Ta‘ala and is filled with abundant blessings for me.

I make dua for you from the bottom of my heart and beseech Allah Ta‘ala to bless you with progress.

I do not have any goodness in my life. It is solely through the love of my seniors and the good opinion which my friends have regarding me that I continue to live in the world.

Three Important Points to Bear in Mind When Carrying Out Righteous Actions https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20737 Mon, 10 Jul 2023 15:50:30 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20737

Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned the following:

Hazrat Moulana Thaanwi (rahimahullah) carried out a very great work (by explaining the teachings of deen and how people should lead their lives in accordance to the sunnah). It is my heart’s desire that the work of dawat and tableegh that I am involved in should be done in a way that the teachings of Moulana Thaanwi (rahimahullah) be taught in it. In this way, the teachings of Moulana Thaanwi (rahimahullah) should spread far and wide in the world (as his teachings conform to the sunnah).

Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) thereafter said:

When delivering a lecture to the public, one should not go into explaining the wisdom behind the various laws and injunctions of the Shari’ah. Rather, one should ensure that he teaches people the various laws and injunctions of Shari’ah in a way that he impresses three points upon them:

The first point which people should be taught is that when they are carrying out any good action, then their intention should be solely to acquire the pleasure of Allah Ta‘ala.

The second point which people should be taught is that when carrying out any good action, then they should have firm conviction in the rewards of Allah Ta‘ala promised to be granted to them in the Hereafter.

Any good action that is carried out for the pleasure of Allah Ta‘ala, and with firm conviction in the Hereafter, will certainly benefit one in the Hereafter. The good action will either be a means of one receiving reward in the Hereafter, or it will be the means of punishment being averted.

The third point which people should be taught is that together with this, when carrying out any good action, one should not do the action with the intention of acquiring any worldly benefit which one will enjoy in this world before passing away.

Such worldly benefits (which are mentioned in the Qur’aan and Hadith) will definitely come on their own and be acquired, however they are not the goal and objective of carrying out the good actions. Even though acquiring such benefits is certain, and having firm belief in these benefits is necessary (as they are mentioned in the Qur’aan and Hadith), however at the time when carrying out these good actions, one’s intention should not be for the purpose of acquiring these benefits, rather one should carry out these good actions solely to earn the pleasure of Allah Ta‘ala.

Thereafter, Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) said:

Nevertheless, in a certain place, if there is a need for one to explain some wisdom of Shari’ah for carrying out a certain good action, then there will be no harm in explaining the secret wisdom and hidden benefits behind the laws and injunctions of Shari’ah (which the fuqaha and ulama have mentioned). However, these things should not be explained in every place.

The Basis of Good Character Should Only be Deen https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20732 Mon, 26 Jun 2023 14:40:42 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20732

Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned the following:

In the world, among the worldly class, showing good character and being honest revolves around acquiring worldly benefit and monetary gain. Since acquiring worldly benefit and monetary gain changes according to the demands of certain situations and conditions, their character and morals also continue to change subject to the situation they are in.

For example, wherever there are prospects of gaining wealth through them fulfilling their promise and being honest, then they will fulfil their promise and conduct themselves with honesty (as their good character and honesty is only motivated by monetary gain). However, if they see that some worldly loss will be incurred through them fulfilling their promise and being honest, then they will choose to lie and be dishonest (as the purpose of them showing good character was only to gain wealth).

On the contrary, the good character and honesty of the people of deen is based on deen (i.e. that deen commands them to show good character and remain honest at all times). Since deen does not change from situation to situation, the character of the people of deen also remains the same in all situations (and is not influenced by wealth).

The governments of today are such that they make promises or pledges on a daily basis and thereafter break their promises or pledges. The reason is that at times, they find that through fulfilling their promises or pledges, they will gain monetary benefit, hence they will fulfil it in such situations, and wherever they find that monetary losses will be incurred through fulfilling their promises or pledges, they opt to break it.

Adherence to the Sunnah and Attributing All Good to Allah Ta‘ala https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20715 Mon, 19 Jun 2023 15:39:25 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20715

My beloved friend! The most important thing is for one to adhere to the sunnah of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) in all facets of his life to the best of his ability.

(Out of humility, Hazrat Shaikh (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) then mentioned regarding himself:)

This unworthy and impure servant is unable to follow the sunnah correctly. However, I have certain pious friends who are such that on hearing of their condition, I become extremely pleased. Many of my friends show great importance to upholding the Sunnah, and they are making tremendous progress (in acquiring the special proximity of Allah Ta‘ala through practicing on the sunnah).

Another aspect which brings me great happiness and joy which you mentioned is that when you carry out any good deed, then your focus is not on the good deed, but rather you consider it only through the taufeeq of Allah Ta‘ala that you were able to carry out this good deed. For one to think in this manner is a great blessing and bounty of Allah Ta‘ala.

You should not worry about the negligence that overcomes you. Insha Allah, through punctually engaging in the zikr of Allah Ta‘ala, your ghaflah (negligence) will gradually decrease.

Express immense gratitude to Allah Ta‘ala for His bounties upon you. Allah Ta‘ala has bestowed you with many of His special favours. Refrain from attributing any good deed to yourself. Every good deed which you carry out is a bounty from Allah Ta‘ala.

Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned the following:

Many a time, those involved in the effort of dawat and tableegh show more concern and attention towards the wealthy and prominent class (by going to them and inviting them towards the effort). As for the poor servants of Allah Ta‘ala, even if they come of their own accord, then not much attention and concern is shown to them.

In reality, this behaviour and conduct is the result of one being affected with wealth and materialism (i.e. such people conduct in this manner on account of them being affected by wealth and the people of wealth).

Understand this well that those servants of Allah Ta‘ala who come to you of their accord are in actual fact a gift and blessing of Allah Ta‘ala upon you and in reality they are sent to you by Allah Ta‘ala.

As for those servants whom you pursue in trying to bring them towards the effort of deen, (then they are also important, but they are not the ones sent to you by Allah Ta‘ala), rather they are the outcome of your effort of calling them. Hence, you should value and appreciate those sent to you by Allah Ta‘ala Himself more than those whom you have brought through your own effort.

These poor Mewati villagers who remain here (in the markaz without anyone calling them) – you should value and appreciate them. Ponder over the fact that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) appreciated the poor and made the following dua to Allah Ta‘ala saying:

اَللّٰهُمَّ أَحْيِنِيْ مِسْكِيْنًا وَأَمِتْنِيْ مِسْكِيْنًا وَاحْشُرْنِيْ فِيْ زُمَرَةِ الْمَسَاكِيْنِ

Unfortunately, in today’s times, we tend to look at those who are not doing anything for the cause of deen, and who are absolutely unmindful and lax in deeni matters, and thereafter, we become satisfied and complacent with the little effort that we are making for deen and we begin to think that we are fulfilling our deeni obligations.

However, what we should be doing is looking at those servants of Allah Ta‘ala who sacrificed everything and gave themselves entirely for deen. On keeping their examples before us, we will begin to realise how much we are falling short in fulfilling our duty, and we will also develop the desire and urge to do more than we are currently doing.

Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) always looked at Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and had the desire to emulate him and reach his high rank in deen.

Being Blessed with The Divine Assistance of Allah Ta‘ala https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20545 Mon, 01 May 2023 13:48:53 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20545

Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned the following:

When the servant corrects his relationship with Allah Ta‘ala, then he receives the divine assistance of Allah Ta‘ala. However, the divine assistance of Allah Ta‘ala does not always come to the servant in the manner that he understands and desires.

Rather, at times, the assistance of Allah Ta‘ala may come in the form of ease and good health, and at times it may come in the form of sickness. This can be likened to the example of a doctor. The doctor’s work is to treat the patient and assist him. However, at times he treats the patient by administering a laxative (causing running stomach), at times he treats the patient by administering a stimulant (through which the patient feels energetic and happy), and at other times, he treats the patient through carrying out a surgical operation. The purpose of all these various treatments is to assist the patient in his condition.

The sign (of one being blessed with the divine assistance of Allah Ta‘ala) is that in whichever condition one may be, his heart is at ease and pleased with the decree of Allah Ta‘ala.

Remedy for Doubts and Stray Thoughts https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20536 Mon, 06 Mar 2023 16:10:57 +0000 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=20536

Hazrat Shaikh Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned the following advice in a letter he wrote to a certain person who was suffering from doubts and stray thoughts and was also contemplating suicide:

An effective remedy for dealing with doubts and stray thoughts is for one to ignore the doubts and stray thoughts and not pay any attention to them.

Furthermore, one should recite ‘Laa howla walaa quwwata illaa billaah’ forty-one times after every fardh salaah, together with reciting durood shareef before and after.

I am disappointed and grieved that an intelligent person such as yourself has been getting thoughts regarding committing suicide. To even contemplate suicide is a sin, hence you should not even think about it. May Allah Ta‘ala bless you with aafiyah (ease).
