Sunnats and Aadaab of the Musjid – Part 1

This entry is part 1 of 9 in the series Sunnats and Aadaab of the Musjid

Quba1. Enter the Musjid with the right foot.

Hadhrat Aaisha (Radiallahu Anha) reports that Rasulullah (Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam) would like commencing from the right side when wearing his shoes, combing his hair, performing wudhu and when carrying out all other works.

It is reported from Hadhrat Anas (Radhiallahu Anhu) that he said: “It is from the sunnah (established from the words of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam)) that when you enter the Musjid you should enter with your right foot; and when you exit from the Musjid you should exit with your left foot.”

2. Recite the masnoon duaa when entering the musjid:

In the name of Allah Ta’ala. May peace and salutations be upon Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). O Allah, open the doors of Your mercy for me.

I seek protection in the great Allah Ta’ala, and in His noble countenance and His eternal might and power from the accursed Shaytaan.

O my Rabb, forgive my sins and open for me the doors of Your mercy.

Hadhrat Abu Humaid (or Abu Usaid) (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “When anyone of you enter the Musjid, then he should recite durood upon Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and recite the following duaa:

Hadhrat Faatimah (Radhiallahu Anha) reports that whenever Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) would enter the Musjid, he would recite durood upon himself (Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)) (i.e. he would ask Allah Ta’ala to shower His choicest blessings upon himself) and recite the following duaa:

Hadhrat Abdullah bin Amr bin Aas (Radhiallahu Anhuma) reports that when Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) would enter the Musjid, he would recite the following Duaa; and he said that when a person recites this duaa, shaytaan says: ‘He has gained divine protection from me for the entire day.’

Sunnats and Aadaab of the Musjid – Part 2

This entry is part 2 of 9 in the series Sunnats and Aadaab of the Musjid

Quba1. One should proceed to the Musjid calmly. One should not run to the Musjid.

Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that I heard Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) say: “When the iqaamat is called out for salaah, then do not proceed towards the salaah whilst you are running, rather come walking with ease and tranquillity. Whatever portion of the salaah you perform with the imam, then perform it; and whatever you missed out, then complete it (i.e. after the Imaam completes the salaah).”

Hadhrat Ka’b bin Ujrah (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “When anyone of you performs his wudhu in the proper manner, and thereafter proceeds to the Musjid, then he should not intertwine his fingers (i.e. he should observe the etiquettes of salaah. As though) he is already in salaah.” (i.e. when he has began receiving the reward of a person performing salaah from the time he has set out, then he should observe the etiquettes the salaah)

2. One should not enter the Musjid without wudhu. [1]

Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “As long as one remains on his musallah awaiting salaah, he receives the reward of one who is in salaah. The angels continue to make duaa for him, ‘O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, have mercy on him’. He continues receiving reward until the time he leaves the Musjid or breaks his wudhu (in the Musjid).” A sahaabi asked: “How does he break his wudhu.” Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied: “Through passing wind.”

3. Apply itr before coming to the Musjid.

Hadhrat Abu Sa’eed Khudri (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: ““Every baaligh person should perform ghusal on the day of Jum’uah, make miswaak and apply any ‘itr that he is able to apply.”

4. Remove any foul smell from one’s body, clothing or mouth before entering the Musjid. E.g. After eating onions.

Hadhrat Jaabir (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Whoever eats from this foul-smelling tree, then he should not come close to our Musjid, for the angels are inconvenienced through the bad odour of those things which you are inconvenienced through.”

Sunnats and Aadaab of the Musjid – Part 3

This entry is part 3 of 9 in the series Sunnats and Aadaab of the Musjid

Quba1. One should be dressed correctly when coming to the Musjid.

O children of Aadam, take your adornment at the place of sajdah (i.e. when performing salaah)

It is reported from Naafi that once Hadhrat Abdullah ibn Umar (Radiyallahu Anhuma) gave him some clothing to wear. He was a slave of Hadhrat Abdullah bin Umar (Radiyallahu Anhu). When Hadhrat Abdullah bin Umar (Radiyallahu Anhu) entered the Musjid, he saw him performing salaah with one cloth covering his body. Hadhrat Abdullah bin Umar (Radiyallahu Anhu) asked him (after salaah): “Don’t you have two pieces of clothing with which you can cover yourself during salaah?” He said: “Yes, I do have.” Hadhrat Abdullah bin Umar (Radiyallahu Anhu) then told him: “Had I to seek assistance from you to assist me for some work and you had been with me behind the house, would you have worn the two pieces of clothing in my presence (and refrained from wearing one)?” He said: “Certainly (out of respect for you) I would have worn two pieces of clothing.” Hadhrat Abdullah ibn Umar (Radiyallahu Anhu) then asked him: “Is Allah Ta’ala more worthy of being shown repect or people? Naafi said: “Certainly Allah Ta’ala is more worthy that respect be shown to him.” Hadhrat Abdullah bin Umar (Radiyallahu Anhu) then narrated the Hadith from either his father or from Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Naafi says that I think it was from Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: When anyone of you performs salaah, h should not dress like the Jews wearing one cloth tightened fastly around his body. The one who possesses two cloths, then he should use one as a lower garment and one as an upper garment. If one does not possess two cloths, then he should use the one as a lower garment and perform salaah.”

2. Make the intention of I’tikaaf for as long as one will remain in the Musjid.

Hadhrat ibn Abbaas (Radhiallahu Anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said regarding the one sitting in I’tikaaf: “The mu’takif (the one remaining in the Musjid) stays away from committing sins, and every moment he receives the reward for carrying out the various forms of ibaadat that he would have been able to carry out had he not been in the state of I’tikaaf.

3. Upon entering the Musjid, one should make salaam to those in the Musjid on condition that they are not engaged in any ibaadat. However, if people are engaged in salaah, then one should not make salaam.[1]

4. Perform two rakaats of Tahiyyatul Musjid upon entering, as long as it is not the makrooh time for performing salaah.

Hadhrat Abu Qataadah (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “When anyone of you enters the Musjid, then he should perform two rakaats of salaah before he sits down.”

Sunnats and Aadaab of the Musjid – Part 4

This entry is part 4 of 9 in the series Sunnats and Aadaab of the Musjid

Quba1. One should not carry out any business transaction while in the Musjid.

Hadhrat Abdullah bin Amr (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) prohibited the singing of poetry in the Musjid, as well as buying and selling, and that people have a gathering in the Musjid on the day of Jumuah before the Jumuah salaah.

2. One should not make any announcement for lost items in the Musjid.

Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Whoever hears a person making an announcement for a lost item in the musjid, then he should say ‘Refrain from making these type of announcements in the house of Allah Ta’ala. However may Allah Ta’ala return your lost item to you.’ (You should not make these types of announcements in the Masaajid) because the Masaajid were not built for this purpose.”

3. One should not raise one’s voice in the Musjid.

Hadhrat Saa’ib bin Yazeed (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports: “On one occasion I was asleep in the Musjid when suddenly someone came and threw some pebbles on me. I looked and saw that it was Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu). He said to me ‘Go to these two people and bring them to me.’ I brought them before him, and he asked them, ‘Where are you two people from?’ They replied that they were from Taa’if. Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) replied: ‘Had you been from the people of Madinah Munawwarah I would have punished you severely. You are raising your voices in the Musjid of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)!’”

4. Ensure that you switch off your cellphone when you enter the Musjid so that it does not cause a disturbance to those performing salaah. Do not take photos while in the Musjid. Taking photos of animate objects are haraam in Islam and taking photos in the Musjid is a greater sin.

Hadhrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Those involved in picture-making will be subjected to the worst forms of punishment on the day of Qiyaamat.”

Sunnats and Aadaab of the Musjid – Part 5

This entry is part 5 of 9 in the series Sunnats and Aadaab of the Musjid

Quba1. One should not engage in worldly talk, nor discuss worldly affairs in the Musjid.

Hadhrat Hasan (Rahmatullahi Alaih) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “A time is soon to dawn upon the ummah when people will discuss worldly affairs in the Musjid. Do not sit with such people, for Allah Ta’ala has no need for them.”

2. Do not quarrel or argue with anyone in the Musjid as this goes against the respect of the musjid.

Hadhrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “To swear a Muslim is a major sin, and to fight with him is an act that can lead one to kufr.”

Hadhrat ibn Umar (Radhiallahu Anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “The following things should not be done in the Musjid. It should not be used as a thoroughfare, nor should weapons be drawn out in the Musjid

Hadhrat Waathila bin Asqa’ (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Keep your children, insane people, your transactions of buying and selling, your quarreling and arguing, your raising your voices, your executing hudood (corporal punishments), your unsheathing your swords away from the Musjid (i.e. do not carry out these actions in the Musjid).”

3. The Musjid should not be used as a thoroughfare to get to the other side.

Hadhrat ibn Umar (Radhiallahu Anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “The following things should not be done in the Musjid. It should not be used as a thoroughfare, nor should weapons be drawn out in the Musjid.

4. It is disrespectful to unnecessarily climb on top of the Musjid. [1]

Hadhrat ibn Umar (Radhiallahu Anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) prohibited performing salaah in seven places; (and from them is) on the roof of the house of Allah Ta’ala.
