Sunnats and Aadaab of Eating – Part 1

This entry is part 1 of 10 in the series Sunnats and Aadaab of Eating

fruit1. One should sit and eat on the floor.

2. One should spread out a cloth (dastarkhaan) on the floor before eating.

Hadhrat Anas (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports: I cannot remember Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ever eating from a small utensil (in the manner and style of the non Arab, non Muslims of that time), nor was thin, fine bread ever baked for him (i.e. he only ate the thick, coarse bread), nor did he ever eat on a raised table. Hadhrat Qataada was asked: What would they (i.e. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and the Sahaabah) eat upon? Qataada (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) replied: “They used to eat on the dastarkhaan (spread out on the floor).”

3.  Wash both hands up to the wrist before eating.

Hadhrat Salmaan Farsi (Radhiallahu Anhu) narrates: “I read in the Taurah that the blessings of food lie in washing the hands after meals. I mentioned this to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied: “The blessings of food lies in washing the hands before eating and after eating.”

Hadhrat Abdullah ibn Abbaas (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Washing the hands before and after meals repels poverty, and it is from the sunnah of all the Ambiyaa.

A pious man narrated that he once had a debt of three hundred Rupees, and due to straitened circumstances, he could not imagine how he could ever be relieved of this burden. Sitting one day in the discourse of an Aalim, he heard him say that whoever washes his hands before and after eating, in view of it being a sunnah of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), will Insha Allah be relieved of his debts in a short span of time. The pious man adopted the above procedure, and through the grace of Allah Ta’ala, he was absolved of all his debts in a few days time.  (The Sublime Conduct of Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) vol.1)

Sunnats and Aadaab of Eating – Part 2

This entry is part 2 of 10 in the series Sunnats and Aadaab of Eating

fruit1. One should recite any of the following duaas before eating:

In the name of Allah Ta’ala

In the name of Allah Ta’ala, and with the blessings of Allah Ta’ala.

Hadhrat ibn Abbaas (Radhiallahu Anhuma) reports that on one occasion Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), Hadhrat Abu Bakr and Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhuma) went to the house of Hadhrat Abu Ayyoob (Radhiallahu Anhu). After they ate till they were satisfied, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “When you acquire such food such as bread, meat, dry dates, semi-ripe dates and fresh dates, and you intend relishing such food, then remember to commence the meal by taking the name of Allah Ta’ala by saying:

In the name of Allah Ta’ala, and with the blessings of Allah Ta’ala.

2. Recite the duaa audibly (where it is possible) as a reminder to others.

3. If one forgets to recite the duaa in the beginning then one should recite the following duaa when one remembers:

(I commence) in the name of Allah Ta’ala from the beginning till the end.

Hadhrat Aaisha (Radhiallahu Anha) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “When you commence eating, then take the name of Allah Ta’ala by saying:

If however one forgets to recite it in the beginning of his meal, then he should recite:

Or

Hadhrat Umayyah (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that on one occasion a man was seated with Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) at the time of meals. The man did not remember to take the name of Allah Ta’ala until when he was about finishing the meal, he said:

At that juncture Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) exclaimed: "Shaytaan continued eating with this person until he took the name of Allah Ta’ala. (No sooner did he take the name of Allah Ta’ala), Shaytaan vomited all that he had consumed."

Sunnats and Aadaab of Eating – Part 3

This entry is part 3 of 10 in the series Sunnats and Aadaab of Eating

fruit1. One should eat and drink with the right hand.

Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Eat with the right hand, and drink with the right hand. When you have to receive anything from someone, receive it in the right hand. When you have to hand over something, hand it over with the right hand. Most certainly (the way of Shaytaan) is that Shaytaan eats and drinks with his left hand, and receives and hands over with his left hand.

2. One should commence eating the food from the side of the plate that is before him.

Hadhrat Umar bin Abi Salamah (Radhiallahu Anhu) relates: “I grew up in the care of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). On one occasion while taking meals with Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) my hand began moving all around in the plate. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) lovingly educated me in the following manner: “O young lad, take the name of Allah Ta’ala upon the commencement of the meal and ensure that you eat with the right hand. Commence eating the food from the side that is before you.” Hadhrat Umar bin Abi Salamah (Radhiallahu Anhu) further says: “This (sunnah imparted to me by Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)) remained my habit of eating thereafter.”

3. While eating, if a morsel of food has to fall on the dastarkhaan, then pick it up, clean it and eat it.

Hadhrat Jaabir (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “If a morsel of food has to fall from one’s hand at the time of meals, one should clean it and thereafter eat it.

Hadhrat Jaabir (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “If a morsel of food has to fall from one’s hand at the time of meals, one should clean it and thereafter eat it. He should not leave it for Shaytaan.

It is reported regarding Hadhrat Ma’qal bin Yasaar (Radhiallahu Anhu), that on one occasion while he was in the company of the wealthy, influential non Muslims taking meals, a morsel of food had fallen from his hand onto the dastarkhaan. He immediately picked it up, cleaned it and ate it. The non Muslims stared and scorned at him in disdain. Those Muslims seated beside him advised him saying: “O our Ameer, may Allah Ta’ala keep you in good condition. However it is our opinion, that you do not repeat this action as we see this upper-class, wealthy people disdaining this action of yours of picking up the dropped morsel and eating it." Hadhrat Maqal bin Yasaar (Radhiallahu Anhu) responded saying: “I am not prepared to abandon the teaching of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) on account of these non Muslims. The teaching of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) that we firmly latch on to and impart to others is that whenever a morsel of food has to fall, we should pick it up, clean it and consume it, and not leave it for Shaytaan.

Sunnats and Aadaab of Eating – Part 4

This entry is part 4 of 10 in the series Sunnats and Aadaab of Eating

fruit1. One should not lean while eating.

Hadhrat Abu Juhaifa (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “I do not eat while leaning or taking support upon anything.”

2.       One should not find fault with the food.

Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (Radhiallahu Anhu) relates regarding the noble character of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) never found fault with the food. If he desired eating it, he ate it, and if he did not wish to eat it, he merely left it.

3.      One should remove his shoes before eating.

Hadhrat Anas (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “At the time of meals you should remove your shoes. Eating without shoes brings about more comfort to one’s feet.”

Sunnats and Aadaab of Eating – Part 5

This entry is part 5 of 10 in the series Sunnats and Aadaab of Eating

fruit1. The young should give preference to the old and senior people (Ulama, etc.) among them to commence eating.

Hadhrat Huzaifa (Radhiallahu Anhu) explains that whenever we ate with Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), we would always commence eating after Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) began eating.

2.  When eating, sit with either both knees on the ground (in the tashahhud posture), or with the right knee raised. [1]

3.      Clean the plate and the other utensils thoroughly after eating. It is reported in the Hadith that by doing this, the utensil makes duaa for one’s forgiveness.

Hadhrat Umme Aasim (Radhiallahu Anha) reports that on one occasion Hadhrat Nubaisha (Radhiallahu Anhu), the freed slave of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), came to us while we were eating from a utensil. He then said that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) had mentioned: “Whoever eats from a utensil, then cleans it by using his fingers, the utensil seeks forgiveness from Allah Ta’ala on his behalf.
