The Need for Adopting Moderation in Friendship and Enmity

whatever_you_do_do_it_in_moderationHazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned:

Moderation should be adopted in all relationships. To exceed the limit in anything is reprehensible and disliked. The Hadith teaches us, “Adopt moderation in your friendship when dealing with your friend; he may perhaps one day become your enemy, and adopt moderation in your enmity when dealing with your enemy; he may perhaps one day become your friend.” If one does not adopt moderation and later on finds his enemy becoming his friend he will feel ashamed and embarrassed over the manner in which he had treated him in the past. In essence, every teaching of Islam contains kindness and consideration for the creation when dealing with them. How beautiful and pure the teachings of Islam are! (Malfoozaat Hakeemul Ummat 8/311)
