Adopting Moderation in One’s Conduct

whatever_you_do_do_it_in_moderationHazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned:

I do not like the quality of boastfulness and pride, nor the displaying of such humility to the point where one disgraces himself before people. In Deen, there is no place for such qualities. Similarly one should not express humility before people with the intention of becoming popular and famous for one’s piety. This is also one branch of pride. Shariah has commanded us to adopt moderation in everything. An easy method to acquire this is that when conducting oneself among people, one does not exhibit pride at any time through one’s actions, nor does one display such humility whereby people get the impression that one is putting up an act or doing it for show. Nevertheless one should conduct oneself in an informal manner while adopting the humility that conforms to Shariah at all times. (Malfoozaat Hakeemul Ummat 8/175)
