Sunnats and Aadaab of Wudhu-Part 2

1. One should gargle the mouth thrice by taking three handfuls of water with the right hand. One should gargle thoroughly allowing the water to reach all the parts of the mouth.

Hadhrat Abdullah ibn Zaid (Radhiyallahu Anhu) was asked regarding the wudhu of Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). He requested for a utensil of water, thereafter demonstrated before them the manner in which Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) performed wudhu. He poured water on his hands from the utensil and thereupon washed his hands (till the wrist) thrice. He then gargled his mouth and rinsed his nose thrice.

2. One should place water in to the nostrils with the right hand and if there is a need to cleanse the nose, one should use the small finger of his left hand.[1]

Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: When you perform wudhu, then place water in the nose and cleanse the nose.

3. One should exercise caution when gargling the mouth and rinsing the nose while fasting, to avoid water going down the throat or nasal passage, thus causing the fast to break.[2]

Hadhrat Laqeet bin Samura (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports: I once asked Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) regarding wudhu. Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: Perform a complete and perfect wudhu, ensure that you make khilaal of the fingers and rinse the nose thoroughly except in the case where you are fasting.

4. One should recite the following duaa at anytime during the wudhu or after the wudhu: [3]

O Allah! Forgive my sins, make my house spacious for me and grant me blessings in my sustenance.

Hadhrat Abu Musa Ashari (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports: I brought water to Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) to perform wudhu. He performed wudhu and I heard him reciting the duaa I then asked him: O Nabi of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), I heard you whilst making wudhu reciting the duaa. Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied: Is this Duaa insufficient in any way, (in encompassing all the bounties and favours of Allah Ta’aala?)

5. One should wash the face thrice. The procedure of washing the face is to take water in both hands and pass it gently over the face. The face has to be washed from the forehead to beneath the chin and from one ear lobe till the other.

Abdullah bin Zaid bin Aasim (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that he saw Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) perform wudhu…he then washed his face thrice.
