1. Q: What are the faraaidh of wudhu?

A: The faraaidh of wudhu are as follows:

  1. Washing the entire face once.
  2. Washing the arms including the elbows once.
  3. Making masah of at least one quarter of the head.
  4. Washing both the feet including the ankles once.[1]

2. Q: Which parts of the face should be washed in wudhu?

A: The entire face should be washed in wudhu i.e. from the top of the forehead till beneath the chin, and from one ear to the other.

3. Q: Is it necessary to wash the area between the sideburns and ears in wudhu?

A: Yes, it is fardh (compulsory).

4. Q:Is it necessary for one to repeat the masah in the case where one had his hair cut after making wudhu?

A: No, it is not necessary.[2]

5. Q:Is it necessary to remove rings, bangles and watches when making wudhu?

A: If water reaches the area beneath the rings, bangles and watches without removing them, it will not be necessary to remove them.[3]

6. Q: What is the method of making khilaal of the beard?

A: Khilaal of the beard should be made by passing the wet fingers of the right hand through the beard from beneath the chin.[4]

7. Q: What are the sunnats of wudhu?

A: The sunnats of wudhu are as follows:

  1. To make niyyah (intention of wudhu).
  2. To make miswaak.
  3. To recite the tasmiyah (bismillah).

8. Q: Is it necessary to remove ointment from wounds or cracks in the feet or hands at the time of wudhu?

A: If passing water over the wounds or cracks will be harmful (or delay the process of healing), it will not be necessary to remove the ointment. Making masah (i.e. merely passing wet hands over the wound or crack) of that limb will suffice.[6]

9. Q: If a person’s hand is amputated below the elbow, does he have to wash the remaining portion of his hand till the elbow in wudhu?

A: He will have to wash the remaining portion of his hand which is below the elbow, including the elbow.[7]

Sunnats and Aadaab of Wudhu – Part 5 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2948 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2948#respond Wed, 05 Feb 2020 14:31:25 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2948

1. Wash the right limbs before the left limbs.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “When you wear a garment and when you perform wudhu, then commence from your right limbs”.

Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would like commencing from the right side when wearing his shoes, combing his hair, performing wudhu and when carrying out all other works (i.e. all other noble works which require respect being shown to the right side e.g. entering the musjid and Ka’bah with the right foot, commencing from the right when wearing clothing, using the right hand to receive or give an item, etc.).

2. Rub each limb thoroughly when washing it to ensure that water reaches each part of the limb.

3. All the limbs should be washed, one after the other, without any delay in between.

4. While making wudhu, do not speak of worldly affairs.

5. Do not waste water while making wudhu.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) passed by Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) whilst he was performing wudhu. Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked him, “What is this wastage (of water in your wudhu)?” He replied, “Is there also wastage in wudhu?” Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “Yes, even if you are performing wudhu at the bank of a flowing river (then too, be mindful of not wasting water).”

Sunnats and Aadaab of Wudhu – Part 4 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2857 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2857#respond Tue, 04 Feb 2020 14:27:56 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2857

1. Make masah of the nape (the back of the neck) using the back of the fingers. Masah will not be made on the throat.[1]

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) narrates that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Whoever performs wudhu and makes masah on his nape, he will be saved from wearing a necklace (of fire) around his neck on the Day of Judgement.”

2. Wash the feet including the ankles thrice. It is mustahab to commence washing the feet from the toes towards the ankles.

Hazrat Humraan (rahimahullah), the freed slave of Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), reports that Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) requested for some water to perform wudhu … (He then commenced performing wudhu until) he washed his right foot until the ankles thrice, followed by the left foot in a similar manner. He then mentioned, “I saw Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) perform wudhu in the manner I performed wudhu.”

3. Make khilaal of the toes using the small finger of the left hand. Commence with the small toe of the right foot and end with the small toe of the left foot.[3]

Hazrat Mustawrid bin Shaddaad (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports, “I saw Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) making khilaal of his toes with the small finger (of his left hand) whilst making wudhu.”

4. Upon completing the wudhu, recite the shahaadah. If you are in an open place, look towards the sky when reciting the shahaadah.[5] Similarly, recite the other masnoon duas which are reported in the Hadith.

Below are some of the various masnoon duas which are reported in the Hadith to be recited upon the completion of wudhu:

Dua One:

The one who recites the following dua, the eight doors of Jannah are opened for him and he may enter from whichever door he wishes:[6]

I testify that there is no deity besides Allah Ta’ala who is alone and has no partner, and I testify that Hazrat Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) is His servant and messenger. O Allah Ta’ala, include me from among those who constantly repent and among those who are extremely pure.

Dua Two:

The one who recites the following dua, the reward of the dua will be recorded for him on a scroll which will be kept sealed until the Day of Qiyaamah: [7]

Glory and praise be for You O Allah Ta’ala. I testify that there is none worthy of worship besides You. I seek Your forgiveness and I repent to You.

5. Make wudhu in sequence.[8]

Sunnats and Aadaab of Wudhu- Part 3 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2835 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2835#respond Mon, 03 Feb 2020 13:40:13 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2835

1. Make khilaal of the beard. Khilaal of the beard should be made by passing the wet fingers of the right hand through the beard from the bottom (from beneath the chin). Khilaal is sunnah for the one whose beard is thick due to which the skin beneath the hair is not visible. If the beard is thin and the skin beneath the hair is visible, then in this case, khilaal of the beard will not be made. Instead, when washing the face, it will be necessary to make the water reach the skin of the face.[1]

Hazrat Anas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that when Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would make wudhu, he would take a handful of water and place it under his chin to make khilaal of his beard, and Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “My Rabb has commanded me (to make khilaal of the beard) in this manner.”

2. Take water in both the palms and wash the right arm including the elbow thrice. Thereafter, take water in both the palms and wash the left arm including the elbow thrice. It is sunnah to commence the washing of the arms from the fingers going up to the elbows. If one washes the arms from the elbows going down towards the fingers, the washing will be valid, however this is against the sunnah method of washing the arms.[3]

Hazrat Abdullah bin Zaid bin Aasim (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that he saw Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) perform wudhu … (While performing wudhu,) Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then washed his face thrice. Thereafter, he washed his right arm thrice and then his left arm thrice.

3. Make khilaal of the fingers. Khilaal of the right hand will be made before the left hand. Khilaal will be made by placing the left hand above the right hand and passing the fingers of the left hand through the fingers of the right hand, and thereafter placing the right hand above the left hand and passing the fingers of the right hand through the fingers of the left hand. Khilaal can also be made through intertwining the fingers of the right hand with the fingers of the left hand.[4]

Hazrat Laqeet bin Sabirah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “When you perform wudhu, ensure that you make khilaal of the fingers.”

4. Make masah of the entire head once. The method of masah is for one to take both his hands and pass them over the entire head, commencing from the front and moving towards the back of the head.[6]

Hazrat Salamah bin Akwa’ (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports, “I saw Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) performing wudhu. (While performing wudhu, I saw that) he made masah of his head once.”

5. Make masah of the ears. When making masah, use the index finger to make masah of the internal portion of the ear and the thumb to make masah of the external portion of the ear (behind the ear). Thereafter, insert the small finger or index finger into the ears.[8]

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr bin Aas (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that a person once came to Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and asked, “O Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! How should one perform wudhu?” Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) requested for some water to be brought in a utensil … (Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then began to demonstrate the method of performing wudhu until) he thereafter made masah of his head and placed his fingers in his ears, making masah of the outer portion of the ears with his thumbs and the inner portion of the ears with his index fingers.

Sunnats and Aadaab of Wudhu-Part 2 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2666 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2666#respond Sun, 02 Feb 2020 05:22:39 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=2666

1. Gargle the mouth thrice by taking three handfuls of water with the right hand. Gargle thoroughly, allowing the water to reach all the parts of the mouth.[1]

Hazrat Abdullah bin Zaid (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was asked regarding the wudhu of Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). Hence, he requested that a utensil of water be brought. He then demonstrated to them the manner in which Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) used to perform wudhu. He poured water onto his hands from the utensil and then washed his hands (till the wrists) thrice. Thereafter, he inserted his hands in the utensil and (took water and) gargled his mouth and rinsed his nose thrice.

2. Insert water into the nostrils with the right hand thrice, and if there is a need to clean the nose, do so with the left hand.[2]

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “When any one of you performs wudhu then he should insert water into the nostrils and thereafter clean the nose (with the left hand).”

3. When fasting, exercise caution in gargling the mouth and rinsing the nose. Do not exert yourself in doing so, as water may go down the throat or nasal passage, thus causing the fast to break.[2]

Hazrat Laqeet bin Sabirah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports, “I once asked Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) regarding wudhu. Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, ‘Perform a complete and perfect wudhu, ensure that you make khilaal of the fingers and rinse the nose thoroughly, except in the case where you are fasting.’”

4. Recite the following dua at any time during the wudhu or after the wudhu:[4]

O Allah Ta‘ala, forgive my sins, grant me spaciousness in my home and bless me with barakah in my sustenance.

Hazrat Abu Moosa Ash’ari (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports, “I brought water to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) to perform wudhu. He performed wudhu and I heard him recite the dua I then asked him, ‘O Nabi of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! While you were making wudhu, I heard you reciting the dua: Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, ‘Has this dua left out any goodness? (It has encompassed all the bounties and favours of Allah Ta‘ala within it)’”

5. Wash the face thrice. The procedure of washing the face is to take water in both hands and pass it gently over the face. It is makrooh to splash the water on the face. The face has to be washed from the top of the forehead to beneath the chin and from one ear till the other. Ensure that water reaches all parts of the face, including the corner of the eyes and the skin between the earlobes and sideburns.[6]

Hazrat Abdullah bin Zaid bin Aasim (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that he saw Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) perform wudhu… (while Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was performing wudhu,) he then washed his face thrice.

1. When making wudhu, sit on a raised place (e.g. a chair) and face the qiblah. The place where one makes wudhu should be a clean place [1]

Hazrat Abd Khair (rahimahullah) reports that a chair was brought to Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). He then sat on the chair (in order to demonstrate the wudhu of Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)). Thereafter, he requested that a utensil of water be brought. He then commenced by pouring water on his hands thrice (i.e. he washed his hands thrice till the wrists).

2. Make the intention for wudhu.[2]

3. Recite the masnoon dua before commencing the wudhu:[3]

(I commence) in the name of Allah Ta‘ala and all praise belongs to Allah Ta‘ala.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “O Abu Hurairah! When you perform wudhu, then (first) recite the dua Through reciting this dua, the malaa’ikah (angels) which protect you (are commanded to) continuously record good deeds for you until you break that wudhu.”

4. Wash both the hands up to the wrists thrice.[5]

Hazrat Humraan (rahimahullah), the freed slave of Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), reports that Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) requested that water be brought (to demonstrate to the people how to perform wudhu). He then commenced the wudhu by washing his hands (till the wrists) thrice. (In this narration, which appears in Saheeh Bukhaari, Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said, “I had seen Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) perform wudhu in this manner.”)

5. Cleanse the mouth with a miswaak. When using the miswaak, brush the teeth in a horizontal manner and the tongue in a vertical manner. In the absence of a miswaak, you may use your finger as a substitute.[7]

Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “The salaah performed after cleansing the mouth with the miswaak is seventy times superior and more rewarding than the salaah performed without using the miswaak.”

Hazrat Anas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “The finger can be used as a substitute in the absence of a miswaak.”

Using the Miswaak before Reciting the Qur’aan Majeed https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=13252 Wed, 16 Jan 2019 04:29:02 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=13252 عن علي رضي الله عنه أنه أمر بالسواك وقال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إن العبد إذا تسوك ثم قام يصلي قام الملك خلفه فتسمع لقراءته فيدنو منه – أو كلمة نحوها – حتى يضع فاه على فيه فما يخرج من فيه شيء من القرآن إلا صار في جوف الملك فطهروا أفواهكم للقرآن.

Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “When a person makes miswaak and then stands to perform salaah, an angel stands behind him and listens attentively to his recitation of the Qur’aan. The angel then draws close to him until it places its mouth upon his mouth. Whatever portion of the Qur’aan he then recites is protected in the belly of the angel (and thereafter secured by Allah Ta‘ala). Hence, ensure that you cleanse your mouth before reciting the Qur’aan.”

Hadhrat ibn Umar (Radhiyallahu Anhuma) report that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “The one who makes wudhu and takes the name of Allah Ta’ala (at the beginning of the wudhu), the wudhu will be a means of purification for his entire body (i.e. for the minor sins committed by the entire body), and the one who makes wudhu and does not take the name of Allah Ta’ala, the wudhu will only be a means of purification for the limbs of wudhu (i.e. for the minor sins committed by the limbs of wudhu ).”

Indeed whichever person sleeps in the state of wudhu, an angel (is appointed) to spend the night with him. If at any part of the night he turns (changes his sleeping posture), the angel makes duaa for him in the following words: O Allah! Entering the masjid without wudhu https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=1895 https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=1895#respond Sat, 02 Jun 2012 13:38:57 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=1895 Q: Is it permissible for one to enter the masjid without wudhu?

A: It is permissible for one to enter the masjid without wudhu. However it is in keeping to adab (respect) that one remains in the state of wudhu whilst in the musjid.
