O Allah, the stars have set and the eyes are calm (resting), and You are the Ever- Living, the Eternal, neither slumber nor sleep overtakes You; O the Ever- Living, the Eternal, allow my night to pass with calmness (and rest), and allow my eyes to fall asleep.

Hadhrat Zaid bin Thaabit (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports: I complained to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) that I was experiencing sleeplessness at night.

O Allah, the Rabb of the seven skies and whatever its shadow falls upon, and the Rabb of the (seven) earths and whatever creation it carries (above it), and the Rabb of the Shayaateen and of whom they lead astray, be my guardian (and protect me) from the evil of all Your creation, that anyone of them exceed the bounds in dealing with me, or harms me, Your protection is great and Your name is exalted.

Duaa when Experiencing Fear at Night https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=8929 Sat, 29 Oct 2016 15:06:26 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=8929 sweet dreamsIf one experiences fear at night, he should recite the following duaa:

I seek protection in the complete words of Allah Ta’ala, which neither a pious person nor a sinner can surpass; from the evil of what descends from the sky and what ascends in it, and from the evil of what He created in the earth and what comes out of it, and from the evil of the trials of the night and the trials of the day, and from the evil of those creations that come out during the night and day, except for those who come with good, O the Most Merciful.

Hadhrat Khaalid bin Waleed (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that on one occasion he complained to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) that he was experiencing fear during the night. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Should I not teach you a duaa which Hadhrat Jibraaeel (Alayhis Salaam) had taught me to recite, at the time he informed me that an evil Jinn was planning to harm me.” Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) then recited the following Duaa

In the name of Allah Ta’ala. I seek protection through the complete words of Allah Ta’ala from His anger, His punishment, the evil of His servants, the whispers of the Shayateen and of their presence.

Hadhrat Abdullah bin Amr (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports: “Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) taught us to recite the following duaa when we become frightened while sleeping (due to seeing a bad dream).

Hadhrat Abdullah bin Amr (Radhiyallahu Anhu) used to teach his children to recite this duaa at the time of retiring to bed. From his children, those who were minors and were unable to learn the duaa, he used to write it on a page and tie it to their necks.

Performing Salaah after Seeing a Bad Dream https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=8820 Sat, 24 Sep 2016 04:37:35 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=8820 sweet dreamsUpon seeing a bad dream, one should make wudhu and engage in salaah

Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “There are three types of dreams. (The first type of dream is) a good dream which is a glad tiding from the side of Allah Ta’ala. (The second type of dream is) a dream from the side of Shaytaan wherein he tries to create worry in the heart of the one who sees the dream. (The third type of dream) is a dream which one sees what was playing in one’s mind. Thus if anyone of you sees a dream that he dislikes, then he should stand up and perform salaah, and he should not mention it to anyone.”

What to do Upon Seeing a Bad Dream https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=8762 Sat, 20 Aug 2016 13:32:27 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=8762 sweet dreamsIf one experiences a bad dream then one should turn to the left and spit thrice When spitting he should emulate the action of one who is spitting, without any saliva leaving his mouth. This action is done in order to reject the thought that Shaytaan had put in one’s heart and showing Shaytaan that this evil will not take place.

Hadhrat Jaabir (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “When you see a bad dream, then spit on your left thrice, (i.e. one should emulate the action of one who is spitting, without any saliva leaving the mouth) and thereafter seek protection of Allah Ta’ala thrice from Shaytaan, and one should change one’s sleeping position.

If one wishes, one may relate his dream to someone who he is fond of (someone who is his well-wisher).

Hadhrat Abu Saeed Khudri (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “If anyone of you sees a good dream that pleases him, then one should regard such a dream to be from the side of Allah Ta’ala, therefore he should praise Allah Ta’ala and he may mention it (to someone who is his well-wisher). However, if he sees a bad dream, then one should regard such a dream to be from the side of Shaytaan, and he should seek the protection of Allah Ta’ala from its evil and he should not mention such a dream to anyone, the evil of such a dream will not cause him any harm.

Hadhrat Abu Qataadah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that he heard Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) say: “Good dreams are from Allah Ta’ala. If anyone of you sees a good dream that pleases him, then he should only mention it to someone who he is fond of.”

In the name of Allah (I lay down to sleep). O Allah, I have surrendered my life to You, and turned my face towards You, and entrusted all my affairs to You, and I have placed my complete reliance upon You, (and I do so) to gain Your mercy and out of fear for Your punishment. There is no refuge and safety from Your anger except through You (Your mercy). I have firmly believed in Your kitaab, that which You have revealed, and (I have believed) in your Nabi, whom You have sent as Your messenger.

There is no deity besides Allah Ta’ala, who is alone, who has no partner. To Him belongs the kingdom (of the entire universe), and for Him is all praise and He has power over everything. There is no ability (to avoid sins) and no power (to do good) except with the help of Allah Ta’ala. Glory be to Allah, All praise is to Allah, there is none worthy of worship besides Allah, and Allah is the greatest.

Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Whoever recites the following duaa when retiring to bed, Allah Ta’ala will forgive his sins, even though it be as much as the foam of the ocean.”

I seek Allah’s forgiveness, the One besides whom there is no deity, the Ever- Living, the Eternal, and I turn to Him in seeking His pardon

Hadhrat Abu Sa’eed (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Whoever recites the following duaa thrice before retiring to bed, Allah Ta’ala will forgive his sins even though it be as much as the foam of the ocean, or as much as the number of the leaves on the trees, or as much as the sand of the land of Aalaj (the name of a certain place), or sas much as the number of days in this world.”

O Allah, I seek protection in Your noble Countenance and in Your perfect words from the evil of all things which are in Your control. O Allah, You alone can settle my debts and forgive my sins. O Allah, Your army will never be defeated, and Your promise will never be broken, and the strive of the one who strives will not benefit him (without Your mercy). You are pure (from all weaknesses) and all praise belongs to You.

Hadhrat Ali (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) used to recite the following Duaa when retiring to bed:

O Allah, You are the One who has created my soul and You are the One who will give it death. Its death and its life is solely in Your control. If You allow it to live, then I ask You to protect it, and if You grant it death, then I beg of You to forgive it. O Allah, I beg of You to grant me Aafiyah.

Hadhrat Abdullah bin Umar (Radhiyallahu Anhuma) once instructed a person to recite the following duaa upon retiring to bed. The person asked (after hearing the duaa), “Did you hear this from Hadhrat Umar (Radhiyallahu Anhu)?” He replied: “Rather from someone greater than Hadhrat Umar (Radhiyallahu Anhu), I heard it directly from Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam).”

Hadhrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (Radhiyallahu Anhu) narrates: "A Sahaabi once met a person from the jinn species. He challenged the Sahaabi to a wrestling match. After commencing the wrestle, the Sahaabi defeated the jinn. The jinn then challenged him again, and the Sahaabi overpowered him for the second time. The Sahaabi then told the jinn: “I see that you are weak and thin and your forearms are like the forelegs of a dog. Are all the jinn like this, or only you?” He (the jinn) replied: “No by the qasm of Allah Ta’ala, I am a strong individual amongst them. Let us wrestle again for the third time. If you defeat me, I will teach you something that will benefit you.” They thus wrestled once more and this time also the Sahaabi triumphed. Thereupon the Sahaabi told the jinn: “Now (as per your promise) you will have to teach me.” So the jinn asked him:”Do you recite Aayatul Kursi?” The Sahaabi replied in the affirmitive. The jinn then continued saying: “(Recite Aayatul Kursi), for no one recites it in his home except that Shaytaan leaves, passing wind like a donkey, and he will not enter again until the next morning.”

One of the students of Hadhrat Abdullah ibn Mas‘ood (Radhiyallahu Anhu) asked him: “Who was that Sahaabi who wrestled with the jinn, was it Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu)?” Hadhrat Abdullah ibn Mas‘ood (Radhiyallahu Anhu) replied: “Besides Hadhrat ‘Umar (Radhiyallahu Anhu), who else could it have been? (i.e. certainly, it was Hadhrat Umar (Radhiyallahu Anhu). ”

Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports: “On one occasion Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) appointed me to protect and safeguard the zakaat wealth that was given in the month of Ramadhaan. One night a person came and began taking away some grain. I caught him and said to him ‘I take an oath on Allah, I will definitely report you to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).’ He replied: ‘I am a needy person, and I have a family to support, therefore I am taking this wealth due to my great need.’ Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (Radhiallahu Anhu) (after listening to the man’s need) thus released him. The following morning Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) addressed me saying: ‘O Abu Hurayrah, what transpired between yourself and your captive last night?’ I replied: ‘O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), he complained of being in great need and having a family to support, so I felt pity for him and released him. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied: ‘He has spoken lies to you, and he will return.’

I was sure that he will definitely return due to the statement of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), hence I waited for him. The following night he came and began taking away some grain. I apprehended him and said to him ‘I will definitely report you to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).’ He replied: ‘Allow me to go. I am a needy person, and I have a family to support, I won’t return in the future.’ Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (Radhiallahu Anhu) (upon seeing his desperation) had mercy on him and released him. The next morning Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) addressed me saying: ‘O Abu Hurayrah, what happened to your captive last night?’ I replied: ‘O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), he complained of being in constraints and having to fulfil the needs of his family, so I had mercy on him and released him. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied: ‘He has spoken lies to you, and he will return.’

So I awaited his arrival for the third time. The following night he returned and began taking away some grain. I took hold of him and said to him ‘This time I will definitely report you to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). This is the third time that you have returned whereas you previously claimed never to return, yet you are back. ’ He replied: ‘Please release me in exchange of me teaching you something through which Allah Ta’ala will cause you to benefit through it. I agreed, and he said: ‘When you retire to bed, then recite Aayatul Kursi, for an angel will be appointed to continuously protect you throughout the night, and till the morning no shaytaan can come close to you.’ I thus released him and allowed him to go.

The next morning Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) addressed me saying: ‘O Abu Hurayrah, what happened to your captive last night?’ I replied: ‘O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), he told me that (in exchange of me letting him go) he will teach me certain words whereby Allah Ta’ala will cause me great benefit, hence I accepted and thus allowed him to go. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) asked: “What did he teach you?” I replied: He told me ‘When you retire to bed, then recite Aayatul Kursi.’ And he said: ‘an angel will be appointed to continuously protect you throughout the night, and till the morning no shaytaan can come close to you.’ -The narrator of the Hadith explains that Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (Radhiallahu Anhu) accepted the deal as it is known that all the Sahaabah were most anxious in acquiring knowledge-. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said to Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (Radhiallahu Anhu): ‘Though he is the greatest liar, however on this occasion he has spoken the truth. O Abu Hurayrah, do you know who you have been conversing with for the last three nights?” Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (Radhiallahu Anhu) replied in the negative. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) mentioned: “That was Shaytaan.”

Hadhrat Aaisha (Radhiallahu Anha) reports that whenever Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) would retire to bed every night, he would recite Surah Ikhlaas, Surah Falaq and Surah Naas and thereafter blow on his both palms. Subsequently, he would rub his palms upon his entire body. He would commence rubbing his palms on his head, face and the front portion of his body. He would repeat this action three times.

Reciting Tasbeeh-e-Faatimi before Retiring to Bed https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=8327 Sat, 02 Jan 2016 03:57:23 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=8327 sweet dreamsOne should recite Tasbeeh-e-Faatimi before retiring to bed: i.e. 33 times Subhaanallah, 33 times Alhamdulillah, and 34 times Allahu Akbar.

Hadhrat Ali (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that on one occasion Hadhrat Faatimah (Radhiallahu Anha) went to the house of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) to complain about the difficulty she was experiencing while using the handmill. The news reached her that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) had received some slaves (so she had thought that she would request Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) for a slave to assist her in her daily chores). However, (upon reaching the home) she did not find Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) present, hence she informed Hadhrat Aaisha (Radhiallahu Anha) of her reason for coming. When Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) reached home, Hadhrat Aaisha (Radhiallahu Anha) informed him regarding the request of Hadhrat Faatima (Radhiallahu Anha). Subsequently, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) then came to our home at the time we were retiring to bed. (Upon seeing him) we intended to wake up (out of respect for him), but Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) told us to remain as we were. He then came and sat between us until I could feel the coolness of his feet on my stomach (i.e. due to being seated so close to us in between, his mubaarak feet touched the side of my body). He then said: “Should I not show you something better than what you had requested (i.e. better than me giving you a slave to assist you in your daily chores)? Before retiring to bed, then recite Subhaanallah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times and Allahu Akbar 34 times, for certainly this is better for you (in assisting you in your daily chores) than acquiring a slave. (According to another narration) Hadhrat Ali (Radhiallahu Anhu) further said: “I did not leave out this practice from the time I heard it from Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).” Someone present asked: “Not even on the night of Siffeen (i.e. the night of the battle of Siffeen)?” He replied: “Not even on the night of Siffeen.”

Hadhrat Baraa (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) would sleep on his right hand when sleeping and recite the following duaa:

Hadrat Hafsa (Radiallahu anha) reports that when Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) intended to sleep, he would place his right hand under his cheek and recite the following duaa thrice:

Dusting the Bed before Sleeping https://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=8161 Fri, 13 Nov 2015 04:48:15 +0000 http://ihyaauddeen.co.za/?p=8161 sweet dreamsOne should dust his bed before going into bed and recite the following duaa:

O my Rabb, only with Your name have I placed my side down (i.e. I have lay down to sleep), and only with Your help I shall raise it. If You withhold my soul then have mercy on it, and if You return it, then safeguard it as You safeguard Your pious servants.

Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “When any one of you retires to bed, then he should dust the bed with the inner-part of the tail of his lungi. The reason being is that one is unaware of what may have entered his bed in his absence. He should then lie on his right side and recite the following duaa:

    Duas and Azkaar Before Sleeping

    Dua One

O Allah Ta‘ala, with Your name do I die and live. [1]

    Dua Two

O Allah Ta‘ala, save me from Your punishment on the day when You will raise Your servants (from the grave).

Note: Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would recite this dua thice.[2]

    Dua Three

All praises are due to Allah Ta‘ala, who gave us food, drink, fulfilled our needs and gave us shelter. There are many who do not have anyone to support them, nor anyone to provide them with shelter.[3]

    Dua Four

I beg forgiveness from Allah Ta‘ala, the One besides whom there is none worthy of worship, who is Ever-Living, the Maintainer of everything that exists, and I turn to Him in repentance.

Note: The virtue of reciting this dua is that all one’s minor sins will be forgiven.

Hazrat Abu Sa’eed (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “The one who recites the abovementioned istighfaar thrice before sleeping, Allah Ta‘ala will forgive his (minor) sins, even if they are as abundant as the foam on the ocean, the leaves on the tress, the grains of sand in Aalij (a place in the desert that contains abundant heaps of sand), and the days of the dunya.[4]

    Dua Five

With Your name, O my Rabb, I place my side (on the bed), and with You (i.e. Your name and help) I raise it (on awakening). If You take my soul (in my sleep) then show it mercy, and if you leave it (i.e. allow me to awaken alive) then protect it (from falling into sin) with that (special protection and tawfeeq) through which You protect Your pious servants.[5]

    Dua Six

O Allah Ta‘ala! You created my soul, and you will take it. For You alone is its dying and living. If you allow it to live (after sleeping) then protect it (from falling into sin), and if you cause it to die then forgive it. O Allah Ta‘ala! I ask you for aafiyah (comfort and ease).[6]

    Dua Seven

O Allah Ta‘ala! Rabb of the heavens, Rabb of the earth, Rabb of the magnificent throne, our Rabb and Rabb of everything! The One who splits open the grain and the seed, and the One who sent down the Tawraah, Injeel and Furqaan (the Quraan Majeed). I seek protection in You from the evil of everything which you grip by the forelock. O Allah Ta‘ala! You are the First, so there was nothing before You, and You are the last, so there will be nothing after You, and You are the Most-Apparent (through Your signs), so there is nothing above You (in being apparent), and You are the Most-Hidden, so there is nothing below you (i.e. nothing more hidden than you). Settle our debts and enrich us from poverty.[7]

    Dua Eight

All praise is due to Allah Ta‘ala who sufficed me (of all my needs), granted me shelter, fed me and provided me with drink, and who favoured me with bounties and increased me (compared to others in His bounties), and who blessed me with great bounties and caused these great bounties to increase me. All praise is for Allah Ta‘ala in every condition. O Allah Ta‘ala, the Rabb of everything, the Complete Owner of everything and the God of everything, I seek protection in You from the fire of Jahannum.[8]

     Dua Nine

O Allah Ta‘ala! I submit myself before You! I entrust my affair to You, and I turn my face (and heart) towards You, and I rely upon You (i.e. I take support from Your protection), out of hope and desire (for reward) and out of fear (for Your punishment). There is no place of sanctuary or salvation from You (i.e. Your punishment) except towards You (i.e. except towards Your mercy). I bring Imaan in Your kitaab which You have revealed, and in Your Nabi whom You have sent.[9]

Note: If one recites this dua before sleeping, and then passes away while asleep, then one will pass away on fitrah (i.e. on the path of Islam).

    Dua Ten

There is none worthy of worship besides Allah Ta‘ala alone. He has no partner. For Him alone belongs the kingdom and to Him alone belongs all praise, and He has complete control over everything, and there is no power (to refrain from sin) and no strength (to carry our righteous actions) except through Allah Ta‘ala. Glory be Allah Ta‘ala with His praise! There is none worthy of worship besides Allah Ta‘ala, and Allah Ta‘ala is the Greatest.[10]

Note: Through reciting this dua before sleeping, all one’s minor sins will be forgiven, even if they are as abundant as the foam on the ocean.

    Dua Eleven

O Allah Ta‘ala! Forgive me, repel my Shaitaan (from harming me), and set me free (from the shackles of sins), and make my scale (of good deeds) heavy (on the day of Qiyaamah), and cause me to be among the high assembly (of Your pious servants and the angels).[11]

Recite the following before retiring to bed:

    a) Tasbeeh-e-Faatimi i.e. 33 times Subhaanallah, 33 times Alhamdulillah, and 34 times Allahu Akbar.

Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports: On one occasion, Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) went to the house of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) to complain about the difficulty she was experiencing while using the hand mill. The news reached her that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had received some slaves (so she had thought of requesting Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) for a slave to assist her in her daily chores). However, (upon reaching the home,) she did not find Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) present, hence she informed Aaishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) of the reason for her visit. When Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) reached home, Aaishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) informed him regarding the request of Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha). Subsequently, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) came to our home when we were retiring to bed. (Upon seeing him,) we intended to wake up (out of respect for him), but Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) told us to remain as we were. He then came and sat between us, until I could feel the coolness of his feet on my stomach (i.e. due to him being between us and so close to us, his mubaarak feet touched the side of my body). He then said, “Should I not show you something better than what you had requested (i.e. better than a slave to assist you in your daily chores)? Before retiring to bed, recite Subhaanallah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times and Allahu Akbar 34 times, for certainly this is better for you (in assisting you in your daily chores) than acquiring a slave.” (According to another narration,) Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) further said, “I did not leave out this practice from the time I heard it from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).” Someone present asked, “Not even on the night of Siffeen (i.e. the night of the Battle of Siffeen)?” He replied, “Not even on the night of Siffeen.”

    b) Aayatul Kursi

Hazrat Abu Umaamah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Whoever recites Aayatul Kursi after every fardh salaah, nothing prevents him from entering Paradise except death. (In another Hadith reported by Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said,) the one who recites Aayatul Kursi at night when retiring to bed, Allah Ta‘ala will protect his home, the homes of his neighbours, and the homes of the people around him.”

    c) The three Quls

Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) reports that when Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would retire to bed every night, he would recite Surah Ikhlaas, Surah Falaq and Surah Naas and thereafter blow on both his palms. Subsequently, he would rub his palms upon his entire body. He would commence rubbing his palms on his head, face and the front portion of his body. He would repeat this action three times.

    d) The last two verses of Surah Baqarah (i.e. from Aamanar Rasoolu until the end).

Hazrat Abu Mas’ood Ansaari (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “The last two verses of Surah Baqarah are such that whoever recites them at night, it will suffice him (some Ulama explain that it will suffice him from the harm and evil of everything, while other Ulama explain that it will suffice him from reciting anything else during the night or from awaking for Tahajjud).”

    e) One should recite Surah Kaafiroon and Surah Faatihah.[13]

Note: Before retiring to bed at night, one should recite Surah Mulk, Surah Sajdah, Surah Waaqi’ah and Surah Yaaseen. On Thursday night, one should recite Surah Dukhaan and Surah Kahf (Surah Kahf can also be recited on Friday).[14]

I seek protection in the complete words of Allah Ta‘ala, which neither a pious person nor a sinner can surpass; from the evil of that which descends from the sky and that which ascends in it, and from the evil of that which He created in the earth and that which comes out of it, and from the evil of the trials of the night and the trials of the day, and from the evil of those creations that come out during the night and day, except for those that come with good, O the Most Merciful.[1]

    Dua Two

O Allah Ta‘ala, the Rabb of the seven skies and that which it shades, and the Rabb of the (seven) earths and whatever creation it carries (above it), and the Rabb of the shayaateen and those whom they lead astray, be my guardian (and protect me) from the evil of all Your creation, that anyone of them exceed the bounds in dealing with me or harms me. Your protection is great and Your name is exalted.[2]

    Dua Three

I seek protection through the complete words of Allah Ta‘ala from His anger, His punishment, the evil of His servants, the whispers of the shayaateen and of their evil presence. [3]

    Dua Four

There is none worthy of worship besides Allah Ta‘ala who is One, the All-Dominant, the Rabb of the heavens and earth and all that is between them, the Almighty and Most-Forgiving.[4]

Note: This Dua should be recited when a person wakes up from his sleep during the night.

If you have a need to sleep (e.g. due to illness or extreme tiredness) then get someone to wake up you up for Esha or set an alarm.

Hazrat Abu Barzah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) disliked that a person sleep before Esha (i.e. after Maghrib), and engage in discussions after Esha (in the case where there is no need).

    1. Do not sleep unnecessarily after Maghrib. If you have a need to sleep (e.g. due to illness or extreme tiredness) then get someone to wake up you up for Esha or set an alarm.[1]

    2. If your eyes open during the night, recite the following masnoon dua and thereafter you may make dua to Allah Ta‘ala. Insha-Allah, your dua will be accepted.

There is none worthy of worship besides Allah Ta‘ala alone. He has no partner. To Him alone belongs the kingdom, to Him alone belongs all praise and He has complete control over everything. All praise is due to Allah Ta‘ala, and glory be to Allah Ta‘ala, and there is none worthy of worship besides Allah Ta‘ala, and Allah Ta‘ala is the greatest, and there is no ability (to refrain from sin) and no strength (to carry out righteus deeds) except through Allah Ta‘ala. O Allah Ta‘ala! Forgive me!

One may also recite the following dua:

There is none worthy of worship besides You! Glory be to You! O Allah Ta‘ala! I beg Your forgiveness for my sins, and I beg of You Your mercy! O Allah Ta‘ala! Increase me in knowledge, and do not allow my heart to go astray after You have guided me, and bless me from Your side with special mercy, indeed You alone are the Giver (of all blessings and bounties)!

    3. Do not sleep in areas which people use as a walkway (e.g. in a corridor or in an entrance) as this will inconvenience them and may become a means of you being injured or hurt.[4]

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “When travelling through green pastures, then give the animal its due right (through stopping at different places in order to allow the animal to graze). When travelling through dry land at the time of drought, then complete the journey quickly (i.e. do not delay your journey by stopping at different places so that it does not become difficult upon the animal). During the journey, if you have to stop over to spend the night at a certain place, then ensure that you do not camp in the middle of the road as the road is the right of the animals (of the travellers travelling on the road), and the residing place of insects and poisonous creatures at night (which can cause you harm).”

    4. If you see a good dream, then recite You may relate the dream to someone who is knowledgeable in the field of dream interpretation or to someone who is your well-wisher.[5]

Hazrat Abu Sa’eed Khudri (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “If anyone of you sees a good dream that pleases him, then he should regard such a dream to be from the side of Allah Ta‘ala. Therefore, he should praise Allah Ta‘ala and he may mention it (to someone who is knowledgeable in the science of dreams or to someone who is his well-wisher). However, if one sees a bad dream, then he should regard such a dream to be from the side of Shaitaan, and he should seek the protection of Allah Ta‘ala from its evil and he should not mention such a dream to anyone, as the evil of such a dream will not cause him any harm.”

    5. If you see a bad dream then imitate the action of spitting on your left side thrice and recite the following dua thrice. Thereafter, you should change your sleeping position. It is better to also make wudhu and perform some salaah. You should not mention the bad dream which you have seen to anyone.

Hazrat Jaabir (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “When one sees a bad dream, then he should imitate the action of spitting on his left side thrice, and thereafter seek the protection of Allah Ta‘ala thrice from Shaitaan, and he should change his sleeping position.” (In another narration of Saheeh Muslim, it is mentioned that one should make wudhu and perform some salaah.)

    6. It is mustahab to take a siesta (qailoolah) in the afternoon, as this will assist you to wake up for Tahajjud.[6]

Hazrat Ibnu Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Take assistance to fast during the day by partaking of sehri, and take assistance to stand during the night for Tahajjud by making qailoolah (siesta).”

    7. Ensure that you perform some salaah, engage in zikr or carry out any good deed before sleeping so that if your death is written for that night, your last action will be a righteous and pious action. Ensure that you do not carry out any sin or evil deed before sleeping.[8]

Hazrat Jaabir (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “When a person retires to bed, an angel and a Shaitaan both come to him. The angel makes dua for him saying, ‘May your end be upon good,’ and the Shaitaan says, ‘May your end be upon evil.’ If he remembers Allah Ta‘ala and thereafter falls off to sleep, the angel spends the night protecting him and safeguarding him from any type of evil.”

Hazrat Hafsah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) reports that when Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) intended to sleep, he would place his right hand under his cheek and recite the following dua thrice:

    3. Do not sleep on your stomach.[5]

Hazrat Ya’eesh Ghifaari (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports: On one occasion, I was sleeping on my stomach in the musjid due to stomach pains. Suddenly, a man came and shook me with his leg saying, “Sleeping in this position (i.e. on the stomach) is disliked by Allah Ta‘ala.” (I turned to see who was addressing me, then) I saw that it was Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) .”

    4. Do not sleep with your entire body naked or with your satr exposed. Instead, sleep wearing such clothing that conceals your satr.[7]

Allah Ta‘ala makes mention of the great bounty of sleep in the Qur’aan Majeed saying:

And We made sleep a means of rest for you.

    ]]>

Sleep is one of the basic needs of every person, just as eating and drinking are basic needs. Allah Ta‘ala makes mention of the great bounty of sleep in the Qur’aan Majeed saying:

And We made sleep a means of rest for you.[1]

In another verse, Allah Ta‘ala says:

He is the One who has made the night for you as clothing (which covers you with peace and serenity), and has made sleep a means of rest (for you), and has made the day a means of revival.[2]

There are various sunnats and aadaab (etiquettes) in regard to sleeping. Among these is reciting the masnoon surahs and duas and sleeping in the state of wudhu.

The one who recites the masnoon surahs and duas will be protected from the evil of the shayaateen and will be saved from seeing bad dreams. If one passes away, his last action will be the remembrance of Allah Ta‘ala and he will be blessed with the rank of a martyr on account of sleping in the state of wudhu.[3]

At the time of sleeping, one should make the intention that he is fulfilling this need in order to refreshen himself to be able to fulfill the ibaadah of Allah Ta‘ala upon awakening. Similarly, he is sleeping to fulfill the right of his body, as Allah Ta‘ala has given his body a right over him.

Hence, by one carrying out these sunnats before sleeping, one will not merely be fulfilling his need of sleep – but will also be acquiring reward as his sleep will become an act of ibaadah.

    Sunnats and Aadaab of Sleeping

    1. After the Esha Salaah, do not while away your time in idle conversation. Instead, try to sleep as early as possible so that you may be able to wake up for Tahajjud Salaah and perform your Fajr Salaah on time. However, if there is a valid need to remain awake e.g. participating in a Deeni program, discussing Deeni masaa’il, an important mashwarah, etc. then it will be permissible for you to engage in such discussions after Esha.[4]

Hazrat Abu Barzah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) disliked that a person sleep before Esha, and engage in discussions after Esha (in the case where there is no need).

Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports, “Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) engaged in discussions after Esha with Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) regarding a matter concerning the Muslims while I was also present.”

Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) reports that she had never seen Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) sleep before Esha, nor did she see him engage in idle discussions after Esha. He would either engage in the remembrance of Allah Ta‘ala after Esha, thereby reaping the rewards of the Hereafter and becoming successful, or he would go to sleep, thereby saving himself (from being engaged in things of no benefit). Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) further says, “Engaging in talks after Esha is permissible for three groups of people; for a married couple, a traveller (to assist him in remaining awake and completing the journey) and one who intends performing salaah during the night.”

    2. It is sunnah to sleep in the state of wudhu.[6]

Hazrat Mu’aaz bin Jabal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “The one who sleeps in the state of wudhu, and thereafter wakes up during the night (or turns from one side to the other), and asks Allah Ta‘ala for anything of this world or the Hereafter, Allah Ta‘ala will surely grant it to him.”

    3. Before sleeping, you should dust the bed, as there may be some harmful insect etc. in the bed.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “When any one of you retires to bed, then he should dust the bed with the inner-part of the tail of his lungi. The reason is that one is unaware of what could have entered his bed in his absence (e.g. insects, etc.).

    4. Cleanse your mouth by using the miswaak before sleeping.[8]

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that whenever Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) retired to bed at night or awoke during the night, he would use the miswaak.

    5. It is mustahab to apply surmah before sleeping.[10]

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Apply surmah by using ithmid (a type of surmah), for certainly it cleans the eyes and causes the hair (eyelashes) to grow.” Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) further says that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) kept a container of surmah from which he used to apply surmah every night. He would apply surmah thrice in the right eye and thrice in the left eye.
