Sunnats and Aadaab of Clothing – Part 10

hangers1. One should wear trousers or a lungi under one’s kurta. One should avoid wearing Bermudas/jammies under the kurta.

2. The clothing one chooses to wear should not have any emblem or logo that has a kufr connotation or is a sign of kufr e.g. the cross, devil, Nike tick etc.

عن  ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما قال : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : من تشبه بقوم فهو منهم. (أبو داود رقم 4033)

Hadhrat ibn Umar (Radihyallahu Anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “The one who emulates a people will be counted from amongst them (in the court of Allah Ta’ala).

عن عبد الله بن عمرو بن العاص قال: رأى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم علي ثوبين معصفرين فقال إن هذه من ثياب الكفار فلا تلبسها  (مسلم رقم 2077)

Hadhrat Abdullah bin Amr (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports: Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) had seen me wear two yellow-coloured pieces of cloth. He said: “This is from the clothing of the disbelievers, therefore do not wear it.”

hangers1. One should not adopt the fashions and trends of the kuffaar in one’s dressing.

عن عبد الله بن عمرو بن العاص قال: رأى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم علي ثوبين معصفرين فقال إن هذه من ثياب الكفار فلا تلبسها  (مسلم رقم 2077)

Hadhrat Abdullah bin Amr (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports: Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) had seen me wear two yellow-coloured pieces of cloth. He said: “This is from the clothing of the disbelievers, therefore do not wear it.”

2. One should avoid wearing such clothing that have western logos or imprints of the kuffar on it.

hangers1. One should not wear tattered and torn clothing.

2. If Allah Ta’ala has provided a person with wealth, then out of shukr to Allah Ta’ala he should wear clothing of a good quality. However, if one has not been blessed with wealth, then he should wear clothing according to his means.

وعن عمرو بن شعيب عن أبيه عن جده قال : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : إن الله يحب أن يرى أثر نعمته على عبده. (ترمذي رقم 2819)

Hadhrat Abdullah bin Amr (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Certainly Allah Ta’ala loves to see the signs of His bounties on His servants.”

عن أبى الأحوص عن أبيه قال أتيت النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم فى ثوب دون فقال: ألك مال. قال نعم. قال: من أى المال. قال قد أتانى الله من الإبل والغنم والخيل والرقيق. قال فإذا أتاك الله مالا فلير أثر نعمة الله عليك وكرامته (ابو داود 4065)

Abul Ahwas reports from his father: “I went to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) while I was wearing inferior quality clothing. He asked me: “Do you possess wealth?” I replied in the affirmative. He asked: “From which types of wealth?” I replied, “Allah Ta’ala has blessed me with camels, horses and slaves. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) then said: “When Allah Ta’ala has blessed you with wealth, then the signs of the bounty of Allah Ta’ala upon you and His generosity should be seen.”

3. There is no harm in one wearing good clothing, however one should refrain from wastage and extravagance, and wearing clothing for show.

عن عمرو بن شعيب عن أبيه عن جده قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم : كلوا وتصدقوا والبسوا في غير إسراف ولا مخيلة (نسائي رقم 2559)

Hadhrat Abdullah bin Amr (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Eat, spend in charity and adorn yourself with clothing, but do not waste nor do things for show.”

وقال ابن عباس كل ما شئت والبس ما شئت ما أخطأتك اثنتان سرف أو مخيلة (بخاري في ترجمة الباب)

It is reported that Hadhrat ibn Abbaas (Radhiyallahu Anhu) said: “Eat what you wish and wear what you wish, as long as you refrain from two things; wastage and show.”

hangers1. Males should avoid wearing bright colours that resemble the colours of women’s clothing e.g. saffron colours, pink etc.

عن عمرو بن شعيب عن أبيه عن جده قال هبطنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم من ثنية فالتفت إلي وعلي ريطة مضرجة بالعصفر فقال ما هذه الريطة عليك. فعرفت ما كره فأتيت أهلى وهم يسجرون تنورا لهم فقذفتها فيه ثم أتيته من الغد فقال يا عبد الله ما فعلت الريطة. فأخبرته فقال ألا كسوتها بعض أهلك فإنه لا بأس به للنساء. (ابو داود رقم 4068)

Hadhrat Abdullah bin Amr bin Aas (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports: “On one occasion we descended a valley with Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) turned to me while I was wearing a cloth which was dyed with a yellow-coloured dye. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) asked me, “Why are you wearing this garment?” I thus perceived he disliked the clothing I was wearing (and was displeased) so I went to my family while they were lighting the oven and I threw it (in the oven and burnt it). I then went to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) the following day and he asked me, “O Abdullah, what did you do with your garment?” I informed him what I had done with it. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Why didn’t you give it to one of the women in your family? There is no problem in women wearing this type of clothing.”

hangers1. It is preferable for one to wear white clothing as the Hadith explains that white clothing is the best.

عن ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما قال : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم ألبسوا من ثيابكم البياض فإنها خير ثيابكم وكفنوا فيها موتاكم (الترمذي رقم 994)

Hadhrat Ibn Abbaas (Radhiallahu Anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Wear white clothing, for indeed it is the best of clothes, and enshroud your deceased in it.”

2. One should wear his best clothes on the days of Eid and Jumuah, as these days are the greatest and most virtuous days. It is preferable for one to wear white clothing on these days.

عن عبد الله بن سلام رضي الله عنه أنه سمع رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم يقول على المنبر في يوم الجمعة  ما على أحدكم لو اشترى ثوبين ليوم الجمعة سوى ثوب مهنته (ابن ماجة ص 77)

Hadhrat Abdullah ibn Salaam (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that he heard Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) mention while he was on the mimbar delivering the khutbah on the day of Jum’uah: “Why don’t you purchase a pair of clothing and keep it exclusive for wearing on the day of Jum’uah, apart from your normal daily clothing.”

عن جابر رضي الله عنهما قال كانت للنبي  صلى الله عليه وسلم جبة يلبسها في العيدين، ويوم الجمعة. (صحيح ابن خزيمة  رقم 1766)

Hadhrat Jaabir (Radhiallahu Anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) had a jubbah (a robe or long garment) that he would wear specially on the days of Eid and the day of Jumuah.
